That training would 34 one day serve Frazier well. The Braves won a share of the SWAC 35 Title in 1979, Frazier's junior season. He earned All-SWAC honors 36 and was named a team captain entering his senior year; and 37 WHEREAS, Coach Frazier started his coaching career in 1988 as 38 the first Head Coach at Trinity College in Illinois, now known as 39 Trinity International University. He held the position for nine 40 seasons, built the NAIA program from the ground up, and won a pair 41 of Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference titles before he 42 moved on to the University of Illinois in 1997 as the Illinois 43 Defensive Back's Coach. In 1999, Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy 44 Reid gave Frazier his first NFL job, as Defensive Back's Coach. 45 He was named Defensive Coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals in 46 2003, then joined coach Tony Dungy in Indianapolis in 2005 as 47 Defensive Back's Coach and Special Assistant. The Colts won the 48 Super Bowl his second year there, defeating the Bears. "That time 49 with Tony was invaluable," Frazier says. "It confirmed in my mind 50 that it is so important to stay who you are. His approach is 51 similar to mine." Frazier joined Minnesota as Defensive 52 Coordinator in 2007 and came within one game of the Super Bowl 53 last season, losing a bruising thriller to the New Orleans Saints. 54 When the Vikings fell to 3-7 in 2010, Frazier was tabbed interim 55 coach; and 56 WHEREAS, "Have faith, no matter your circumstances," Leslie 57 Frazier, a 51 year-old Christian, says. "It's not always going to 58 be perfect, but the reality is, it is perfect because of who is in 59 control. I have a lot of work to do to achieve my goals." • OAKLAND RAIDERS HEAD COACH JACK DEL RIO Opening
OAKLAND RAIDERS HEAD COACH JACK DEL RIO Opening Statement: We talked about coming into this ballgame about their ability to feast on turnovers; it’s a big part of what they’ve done to start the year. Definitely one of the ‘must’ coming in is to protect the ball [and] take it away ourselves, we end up minus four today. Clearly, that was one of the biggest factors of the game; I mean, usually is. Minus fours, not many people winning with minus four. We had two guys: one didn’t finish, one didn’t ever make it. Jamize [Olawale] with the hamstring on the long run that got called back and Seth [Roberts] [who is] sick. Found that out on the bus ride over. Left him active with hopes we can get some fluids in him and have him appear, but he never was able to make it. Those are the only things that were brought to my attention. Got off to a great start. Looked like we were going to have a good day, but offensively, it came out right down the field, had a fourth down attempt and got it, and went ahead and finished off the drive and got a touchdown there. Then, defensively went out and did a nice job of getting them stopped, and we had a good start to the game. Then we continued to play, and the end of the day, we look up, and we’re only 3 of 13 on third down. I would imagine a couple of those came on that first drive, so that’s not real good.

“Best for whom? Identifying your best practices through strategic experimentation.” Chris Rider Filene Center for the War for Talent – Research in Action Univ. of Texas, Austin September 27, 2018 3 points. 1. There are no uniform best practices – only what is best for us here and now. 2. Typical implementations do not produce credible evidence of what is effective. 3. Strategic experimentation does. What is a best practice? Always effective? Best where? More often than not? For whom? Probably better than alternatives? When? A method or policy that is taken-for-granted as effective. “Best” might be inferior? 1. Evidence from one context might not generalize. 2. Uniform interventions do not produce credible evidence of what does and does not work. Why not produce your own evidence? BEST PRACTICE? • Tomlin Latest Minority Fellowship Grad to Join Head-Coaching Ranks; Makes It a Foursome with Edwards, Lewis & Smith
TOMLIN LATEST MINORITY FELLOWSHIP GRAD TO JOIN HEAD-COACHING RANKS; MAKES IT A FOURSOME WITH EDWARDS, LEWIS & SMITH The NFL MINORITY COACHING FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM keeps producing head coaches. In 2007, it will be MIKE TOMLIN, new head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers who is only the third head coach in the past 38 years for the club. Tomlin interned with the Cleveland Browns in the summer of 2000 when he was the defensive backs coach of the University of Cincinnati. He joins three other minority coaches who partook in the fellowship program who are now NFL head coaches – HERM EDWARDS of the Kansas City Chiefs, MARVIN LEWIS of the Cincinnati Bengals and LOVIE SMITH of the Chicago Bears. These four make up the majority of the six African-American head coaches in the league this year. The NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship Program, instituted in 1981, provides training-camp positions for minority coaches at NFL clubs. Nearly 1,000 minority coaches have participated in the program since its inception. Tomlin definitely feels that the fellowship prepared him for his new job. “The coaching fellowship gave me an opportunity to learn what I needed to do if I wanted to coach in the NFL,” he says. “As a head coach, I plan to utilize the fellowship to the fullest to give others the same opportunities that were afforded to me.” Tomlin recently promoted Steelers defensive line coach JOHN MITCHELL – the first African-American assistant coach to be a defensive coordinator in the Southeastern Conference when he was at LSU in 1990 – to be the Steelers’ assistant head coach.
