Neil Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800 Online edition VANDERBANK, John London 9.IX.1694–23.XII.1739 Johann van der Banck, known as John Vanderbank, was the son of a tapestry weaver of Dutch origins. From 1711 he was a pupil at Kneller’s academy, but in 1720 he joined Louis Chéron (q.v.) in establishing the first St Martin’s Lane academy; there were 33 subscribers, including established artists such as Louis Laguerre, William Kent and Giuseppe Grisoni; younger artists included Joseph Highmore, Bartholomew Dandridge, George Knapton and William Hogarth, with Arthur Pond one of the youngest and least prepared. Leading an extravagant lifestyle, Vanderbank was forced to quit England in 1724 to avoid his creditors, but returned by 1727 and resumed his career as a history painter, portraitist and illustrator. On 23.VI.1737 he took on John Robinson as an apprentice for five years for a premium of £157 10s. He normally worked in oil but produced many drawings; however virtually no pastels survive. His painting technique has been described as “lively”, in the sense of a Hogarthian lack of finish; the portraits are brightly, sometimes crudely lit. Bibliography Bénézit, s.v. CIMAROSA DOMENICO Compositore italiano (Aversa, 17 XII 1749 - Venezia, 11 I 1801) Gioventù e formazione musicale 1 Nacque ad Aversa il 17 dicembre del 1749, città che aveva dato i natali anche a Nicolò Jommelli, un altro grande editore della scuola napoletana. Alla tenera età di quattro anni dovette lasciare la sua città natale per recarsi con la famiglia a Napoli. Andarono a vivere presso la chiesa di San Severo de' Padri Conventuali. Era figlio di Gennaro Cimarosa, un muratore occupato nella costruzione del Palazzo di Capodimonte, il quale durante la costruzione s'infortunò a morte a causa di una caduta. Sua madre invece era occupata come lavandaia nel monastero vicino alla chiesa. Fu proprio in questo ambiente che il giovane Domenico ricevette i primi rudimenti musicali dall'organista del monastero padre Polcano. Dimostrò subito di avere molte doti per la musica tant'è che nel 1761 fu ammesso al Conservatorio di Santa Maria di Loreto, dove rimase undici anni. I suoi insegnanti furono Gennaro Manna (all'epoca ritenuto il miglior insegnante dopo Alessandro Scarlatti), Antonio Sacchini (fino al 1766) e Fedele Fenaroli (il quale diede a Cimarosa lezioni di contrappunto). In pochi anni divenne un abile violinista, clavicembalistica ed organista, nonché un talentuoso cantante: i suoi compagni lo stimavano e lo ascoltavano con delizia mentre interpretava pezzi d'opera con bella voce, con grazia e con soavità; tra questi si ricordano Nicola Antonio Zingarelli e Giuseppe Giordani. Egli era caratterialmente mite ed abile, oltre che studioso e diligente. Dopo aver lasciato il conservatorio si perfezionò nel canto con il castrato Giuseppe Aprile e nella composizione con Nicolò Piccinni. -

AFS L 54 Edited by Charles Seeger PROBABLY IT IS safe to say that most English-speaking people in the United States know at least one ballad-tune or a derivative of one. If it is not "The Two Sisters, " it will surely be "When Johnny Comes Marching Home"; or if not "The Derby Ram, " then the old Broadway hit "Oh Didn't He Ramble." If. the title is given or the song sung to them, they will say "Oh yes, I know tllat tune." And probably that tune, more or less as they know it, is to them, the tune of the song. If they hear it sung differently, as may be the case, they are as likely to protest as to ignore or even not notice the difference. Afterward, in their recognition or singing of it, they are as likely to incor porate some of the differences as not to do so. If they do, they are as likely to be aware as to be entirely unconscious of having done ·so. But if they ad mit the difference yet grant that both singings are of "that" tune, they have taken the first step toward the study of the ballad-tune. They have acknow ledged that there are enough resemblances between the two to allow both to be called by the same name. -

We’ve been featured on radio and in the newspapers. And the public continues to flock through the doors of our headquarters when we have open house days. Visitors enjoying an Open House Tour at the GAC’s premises We continue to make our resources stretch as far as they can. The Director’s report highlights some of the exciting and important works which we have been able to acquire over the last year. This continues the GAC’s track record of making acquisitions by British artists of the highest calibre, fulfilling its role in promoting British art by displaying it in Government buildings in the UK and abroad. The Collection plays a vital part in Britain’s representation abroad: both as a reminder of our historical past and an illustration of our contemporary preoccupations. Our activities are an integral part of the UK’s diplomatic mission. We are pleased that we are increasingly playing a strategic role when new embassies are being planned. -

CIMAROSA DOMENICO Compositore italiano (Aversa 17 XII 1749 - Venezia 11 I 1801) RRIITTRRAATTTTOO DDEELL CCOOMMPPOOSSIITTOORREE 327 Il padre era muratore e la madre lavandaia. Ancora bambino, la famiglia si trasferì a Napoli in cerca di lavoro, e il padre dopo poco tempo morì in seguito ad un infortunio occorsogli durante la costruzione del Palazzo Reale di Campodimonte. Ridotta in povertà, la madre mandò il figlio Domenico a vivere coi padri conventuali al Pendino dove ricevette le sue prime lezioni di musica. Dimostrando una particolare inclinazione per la musica, venne inviato nel 1761 al conservatorio di Santa Maria Loreto, con l'obbligo di rimanervi dieci anni. Ciò escluderebbe che Cimarosa abbia studiato con G. Manno e A. Sacchini in quanto questi maestri lasciarono il conservatorio rispettivamente nel 1761 e nel 1762 proprio, cioè, quando egli vi entrò. Si sa che i suoi principali insegnanti furono P. Gallo, F. Fenaroli e S. Carcajus, e che si perfezionò in violino, in clavicembalo, in organo e soprattutto in canto. Cimarosa iniziò a comporre mentre era ancora studente e i suoi primi saggi furono alcuni pezzi religiosi, fra i quali vanno ricordati due mottetti a quattro voci con strumenti, che portano la data 1765, attualmente conservati nella Biblioteca del conservatorio di Napoli. Uscito dal conservatorio all'età di 22 anni, ebbe subito la fortuna di incontrare una protettrice nella persona della signora C. Pallante, una nota cantante trasferitasi a Roma. Probabilmente, grazie all’influenza di C. Pallante, Cimarosa ricevette la commissione per due lavori per il carnevale del 1772 al teatro dei Fiorentini. Tali opere, Le stravaganze del conte e la farsa Le magie di Merlina e Zoroastro, non furono bene accolte dal pubblico, e secondo F. -

Song from Pi: a Musically Plausible Network for Pop
Under review as a conference paper at ICLR 2017 SONG FROM PI: A MUSICALLY PLAUSIBLE NETWORK FOR POP MUSIC GENERATION Hang Chu, Raquel Urtasun, Sanja Fidler Department of Computer Science University of Toronto Ontario, ON M5S 3G4, Canada fchuhang1122,urtasun,[email protected] ABSTRACT We present a novel framework for generating pop music. Our model is a hierarchi- cal Recurrent Neural Network, where the layers and the structure of the hierarchy encode our prior knowledge about how pop music is composed. In particular, the bottom layers generate the melody, while the higher levels produce the drums and chords. We conduct several human studies that show strong preference of our gen- erated music over that produced by the recent method by Google. We additionally show two applications of our framework: neural dancing and karaoke, as well as neural story singing. 1 INTRODUCTION Neural networks have revolutionized many fields. They have not only proven to be powerful in performing perception tasks such as image classification and language understanding, but have also shown to be surprisingly good “artists”. In Gatys et al. (2015), photos were turned into paintings by exploiting particular drawing styles such as Van Gogh’s, Kiros et al. (2015) produced stories about images biased by writing style (e.g., romance books), Karpathy et al. (2016) wrote Shakespeare inspired novels, and Simo-Serra et al. (2015) gave fashion advice. Music composition is another artistic domain where neural based approaches have been proposed. Early approaches exploiting Recurrent Neural Networks (Bharucha & Todd (1989); Mozer (1996); Chen & Miikkulainen (2001); Eck & Schmidhuber (2002)) date back to the 80’s. -
