UK Jewish Film promotes awareness of international Jewish life and cultures for a diverse audience. We also provide a dynamic on-going forum for independent filmmakers working with Jewish themes. However, the annual Festival remains a huge focus of our identity and when something in life is so important it is both a privilege and a joy to be able to pursue that challenge. Now in its 15th year the Festival continues to be a much anticipated event for so many people. And this year our programme includes films from 16 countries including Norway (Strictly Confidential); Russia (I Shall Remember) and Poland (Joanna, My Australia, The Moon is Jewish), which gives us a fascinating insight into the history and cultures of these cultures. Israeli film remains a huge focus of our programme and we are delighted to bring to the Festival Joseph Cedar’s impressive new feature Footnote for our Bank Leumi (UK) Gala. Each of the films that we invite to make up this unique programme represents many years of work and dedication for the filmmakers and their crews. It is a matter of huge dedication and determination to complete a film and we commend our filmmakers for their achievements. We feel enormously privileged to be able to enjoy this hugely diverse cornucopia of films and plethora of talent that is offered to us. We benefit when we retain the ability to sustain a sense of wonder at the stories that these films bring to our screens. The UK Jewish Film Festival brings you all this potential and again this year we invite you to join with us to be both excited and entranced by this programme of outstanding films. Thank you for being wonderful audiences and we look forward to meeting you at the cinemas and to sharing this sense of wonder with you all. Judy Ironside. BFI FAN FILM EXHIBITION FUND AWARDS OVER £750,000 TO UK EXHIBITORS TO SUPPORT DIVERSE PROGRAMMING AND BRING BACK AUDIENCES National Lottery funding aims to re-engage audiences with collective, big screen film experiences London, Monday 14 December 2020: Over 140 film exhibitors around the UK have received a share of £759,159 to boost cultural programming and activities to engage diverse audiences as lockdown restrictions ease. The BFI FAN Film Exhibition Fund supports activity to re-engage audiences with collective, big screen film experiences at film festivals, mixed arts venues, and both community and traditional cinemas around the UK. This particular strand of support has been made available via BFI‘s National Lottery funding to the BFI Film Audience Network (FAN). BFI FAN is a unique collaboration of eight Film Hubs managed by leading film organisations across the UK, who each distribute the funding in their region or nation. The BFI FAN Film Exhibition Fund will enable FAN Members to deliver a broad range of programming once they restart, ensuring excellent British and international independent cinema is available to audiences all over the UK. Other priorities of the fund are incentivising exhibitors to embed inclusion and environmental sustainability into their approach to reopening, post closure during the pandemic restrictions. The BFI FAN Film Exhibition Fund was also supported by a donation from global streaming platform MUBI. The total figure awarded to Film Hub Scotland members of £220,000 includes additional funding from Screen Scotland as announced in early November. Film Hub Wales announced Film Exhibition Fund awards totalling £52,000, also in November.

  • Independent Television Producers in England
Negotiating Dependence: Independent Television Producers in England Karl Rawstrone A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of the West of England, Bristol for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries, University of the West of England, Bristol November 2020 77,900 words. Abstract The thesis analyses the independent television production sector focusing on the role of the producer. At its centre are four in-depth case studies which investigate the practices and contexts of the independent television producer in four different production cultures. The sample consists of a small self-owned company, a medium- sized family-owned company, a broadcaster-owned company and an independent- corporate partnership. The thesis contextualises these case studies through a history of four critical conjunctures in which the concept of ‘independence’ was debated and shifted in meaning, allowing the term to be operationalised to different ends. It gives particular attention to the birth of Channel 4 in 1982 and the subsequent rapid growth of an independent ‘sector’. Throughout, the thesis explores the tensions between the political, economic and social aims of independent television production and how these impact on the role of the producer. The thesis employs an empirical methodology to investigate the independent television producer’s role. It uses qualitative data, principally original interviews with both employers and employees in the four companies, to provide a nuanced and detailed analysis of the complexities of the producer’s role. Rather than independence, the thesis uses network analysis to argue that a television producer’s role is characterised by sets of negotiated dependencies, through which professional agency is exercised and professional identity constructed and performed.
