Glory to Jesus Christ!

The Ukrainian Catholic community in the United States is rejoicing at the news that Francis has appointed a new Metropolitan-Archbishop for the Archeparchy of Philadelphia on February 18, 2019.

A native of Syracuse, NY, Bishop Borys Gudziak, will be formally enthroned on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 in the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the in Philadelphia, PA. You are cordially invited to join us for this moment of prayer, communion and outreach, uniting bishops, clergy, religious and faithful as brothers and sisters in Christ.

I am writing to you today to ask you to help us raise money for the start of Archbishop Borys’s ministry. An eight-day period of events is planned for his enthronement in thanksgiving to God for providing our Archeparchy with a new spiritual shepherd. This program named “Heart to Heart” will take place in Philadelphia, PA and in Washington, DC from June 2nd to 9th. It should spiritually encourage participants in an enduring way and be capacity building for the archeparchy:

•Praying for the Descent of the Holy Spirit to foster our relationship with God and our neighbor— “Heart to Heart”;

•Promoting and nurturing relations within the Archeparchy and Metropolia, with the Archdiocese in Philadelphia, the city’s Ukrainian-Americans and with the local community at large, with our brothers and sisters from other , countries, rites, and Churches;

•Engaging the youth “heart to heart,” putting young people at the center of the Church’s mission. Recognizing the rich legacy of our ancestors and handing it on, enhanced, to a new generation.

Pysanky AN OLD AND WONDROUS TRADITION

Pysanky, the original Easter egg! Traditionally pysanky were written during the last week of The Great Fast so that they could be placed in Pascha baskets the following week. Originating from Ukraine, this gorgeous practice is much more involved than the Easter eggs we are used to making at home with vinegar and dye tablets. These Ukrainian Easter eggs are made with a process similar to African batik. Batik is a process where bees wax is applied strategically to fabric and then submerged and dyed. The wax is then removed or built upon to create intricate and lovely colorful patterns. With pysanky, eggs are used instead of fabric. Otherwise the process is very much the same. The dyes used in pysanky are special, and not food safe like we use for modern Easter eggs. The wax like in batik is bees wax and a special tool called a kistka is used. The kistka is like a pen that is used to apply the patterns with hot “Pysanky” Lillian Baron wax. Each pattern holds a special meaning, and is symbolic for many different things. The person writing the pysanky would apply these “One should not think about the doings of particular patterns in order to gain blessings for God when one’s stomach is full; on a full specific intentions. The decorated eggs were stomach there can be no vision of the Divine mysteries.” also intended to be gifts! The writing of pysanky may have started in Ukraine, but it became a + St. Seraphim of Sarov widespread practice in many Slavic countries. If you are interested in taking up this practice, you can order supplies online!
