Pope Francis PALLOTTINES, UKRAINE GRANDEUR OF THE PEAKS, SHINING OF THE SOUL: UKRAINE'S SCOUTS OVER THE WEEKEND, PALLOTTI'S YOUNG SCOUTS SET OUT TO "THINK WELL, FEEL WELL, DO WELL!" (POPE FRANCIS) THE SILENCE OF GOD’S MARVELS Photos & Gratitude: Fr. Valeriy Dubyna, SAC As Pope Pius XII so readily said, be "docile to the lessons of the mountain:...it is a lesson in spiritual elevation, of an energy which is more moral than physical." The young Pallottine scouts of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Ukraine set out on a 4 day journey through the country’s mountains, learning skills of the outdoors through team- work and faith. As they followed the trails, so, too, did they follow in the actions of some of our Church’s most beloved saints. To all of those raised to the altar, they understood the importance of seeking interior solitude; understanding it was peace alone that would increase their sanctification. For many, this was found through contemplating in the silence of God’s marvels. One of the most notable of all was the universal pope from across the Ukrainian border. St. John Paul II cherished the outdoors, a gift from God and entrance to a state of grace during his years shepherding the Church. For “IN CONTACT WITH THE BEAUTIES OF THE MOUNTAINS, IN THE FACE OF THE SPECTACULAR GRANDEUR OF THE PEAKS, THE FIELDS OF SNOW AND THE IMMENSE LANDSCAPES, MAN ENTERS INTO HIMSELF, AND DISCOVERS THAT THE BEAUTY OF THE UNIVERSE SHINES NOT ONLY IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE EXTERIOR HEAVENS, BUT ALSO OF THE SOUL, that allows itself to be enlightened, and seeks to give meaning to life. From the things that it contemplates, in fact, the spirit is lifting up to God on the breath of prayer and gratitude toward the Creator." St. John Paul II \ Be Holy! “AMID THE MARVELS OF MOUNTAINS, SEAS, FIELDS AND SLOPES, YOU ARE IN THE BEST POSITION TO PERCEIVE THE VALUE OF SIMPLE AND IMMEDIATE THINGS, THE CALL TO GOODNESS, THE DISSATISFACTION WITH ONE’S INSUFFICIENCY, AND TO MEDIATE ON THE AUTHENTIC VALUES THAT ARE AT THE BASIS OF HUMAN LIFE. “ St. John Paul II 8 Marian A CDR O S eS T HvE oP A LtL OiT ToI N En W sO R L D " P L A C E Y O U R S E L F I N T H E H A N D S O F M A R Y " S T . RECENT PUBLICATIONS 1984 — 2017 ISSUES 1 — 100 Recent Publications is a compendium of books and articles on cartography and cartographic subjects that is included in almost every issue of The Portolan. It was compiled by the dedi- cated work of Eric Wolf from 1984-2007 and Joel Kovarsky from 2007-2017. The worldwide cartographic community thanks them greatly. Recent Publications is a resource for anyone interested in the subject matter. Given the dates of original publication, some of the materi- als cited may or may not be currently available. The information provided in this document starts with Portolan issue number 100 and pro- gresses to issue number 1 (in backwards order of publication, i.e. most recent first). To search for a name or a topic or a specific issue, type Ctrl-F for a Windows based device (Command-F for an Apple based device) which will open a small window. Then type in your search query. For a specific issue, type in the symbol # before the number, and for issues 1— 9, insert a zero before the digit. For a specific year, instead of typing in that year, type in a Portolan issue in that year (a more efficient approach). The next page provides a listing of the Portolan issues and their dates of publication. • Daily Saints - 22 January
Daily Saints - 22 January Feast of Saint Vincent Pallotti, Missionary, Founder Born: 21 April 1795, Rome, Papal States, Died: 22 January 1850 (aged 54), Rome, Papal States, Venerated in Roman Catholic Church, Beatified: January 22, 1950, by Pope Pius XII, Canonized: January 20, 1963, Rome by Pope John XXIII Vincent was born in Rome on April 21st, 1795, the third of ten children, five of whom died in infancy. His parents were Maria Maddalena di Rossi and Pietro Paolo Pallotti, a small goods grocer, owner of three shops in Rome. Vincent was profoundly influenced by their personal, practical faith, their deep devotion, and generous attentiveness to the poor. He was aware of himself quite early — his urge for activity and achievement, his tendency to pride and anger. At twelve years of age, he selected Fr. Bernardino Fazzini as his confessor and spiritual director. Fazzini, a diocesan priest, recognized in Vincent a person of extraordinary spiritual gifts. Fr. Fazzini played a formative role, inculcating in his young charge a profound awareness of God, the discipline of self (according to the ascetical practices of the time), and readiness for apostolic service. With clear-sightedness and a resolute will, Vincent brought energy to his life project, despite frail health and recurrent bouts of illness. In school he was known as a “little saint” and, although bright, he was also considered “a bit slow” – an illusion amply disproved by the apostolic endeavors of his life. He was ordained a priest when only twenty-three. After his ordination in 1818, he obtained two doctorates – one in philosophy and one in theology.

  • UAC NEWSLETTER February, 2010
UAC NEWSLETTER February, 2010 Dear brothers and sisters in the Union, As promised in last months’ issue of the UAC Newsletter we are very happy to bring you some short reports or reflections on celebrations of the Epiphany in Pallottine communities in Germany and Brazil. It is very good to see that the practice is growing and developing but in a creative way that is in tune with the reality in each area. 1. Epiphany 2010 A Triduum of the Epiphany in Limburg, Germany The Pallottine communities issued an invitation to participate in a triduum in preparation for the feast of the Epiphany. During three days they celebrated solemn Vesper Services in three different churches of Limburg. An average of 50 persons took part in each of the services. The first Vespers took place in the church of St. Marien, which is a parish administered by the Pallottines. Here Sr. Gertrud Meiser, SAC spoke about the messianic expectation of the prophet Isaiah. His vision is a source of encouragement for the Church of today and for the Pallottine family for daily living. Fr. Alexander Holzbach, SAC spoke at the second service which was held in the Church of St. Anna in the center of Limburg. He acknowledged that current parameters for the perception of Christian life may be different from those of the time of St. Paul or Vincent Pallotti. However, as Christians inspired by St. Vincent, we must be experienced as and seen to be people of confidence and hope so that persons who are interested in religious matters may know whom they can approach.

Pallotti pursues its mission of promoting academic excellence and building Christian character in a small community atmosphere of ap- proximately 400 students. The School is fully accredited by the State of Maryland, the Middle States Associa- tion of Colleges and Schools, and the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS). ST. VINCENT PALLOTTI & THE PALLOTTINE MISSIONARY SISTERS Our school’s patron, St. Vincent Pallotti, was a Catholic priest who lived in Rome from 1795-1850. Despite being small in stature and often in ill health, St. Vincent ac- complished an incredible amount in his lifetime. He founded a night school for work- ers and their families, ran a youth group for young men in a rough neighborhood in Rome, worked as a chaplain in the military hospital and the local prison, was a be- loved seminary professor, founded an orphanage, started the first known food stamp program, and worked in numerous other ministries.
