THE APOSTLE PAUL Benedict declared that today, Sunday 29th June, begins a special year dedicated to the Apostle St. Paul to mark the 2000th anniversary of his birth. St. Paul was a gift to the Church. His conversion from zealous persecutor to dedicated evangelist is the most famous conversation of history. The idea of a 'Road to Damasclis Conversion' is part of modem-day speech, used to denote a radical change of direction in any walk oflife. St. Paul's conversion was just that - a radical change of direction, from being opposed to Christ to being for Christ.

St. Paul wrote a series ofletters to the Christians of his day (letters that becanle an important part of the New Testament). They are filled with encouragement's, corrections, explanations, etc. This year of St. Paul offers us an opportunity to return to his writings, for even though they were written almost 2000 years ago, they still speak to our daily lives. They help us to encounter Jesus just as St. Paul did on the road to Damascus.

'Lord Jesus, may I grasp and understand new and afresh that you are truly Lord, Saviour and Master and are the Way, the Truth and the Life. '

Ss PETER AND PAUL. APOSTLES - 29th JUNE Peter and Paul: the pillars of the Church of Rome. Peter stood out as the one who took the initiative while the twelve were with Jesus. Paul is possibly the most powerful personality in the history of the Church.

Those who are loyal and staunch members of anything are referred to as 'pillars'. Scholars suggest that this refers back to a time when the figures and images of were carved into the main colunms supporting the church building. Today we celebrau; the feast of two of the greatest 'pillars' of the Church: in one sense Peter and Paul were much more than pillars, they are more like foundation stones - Jesus is the cornerstone but they are foundation stones.

The Church was built on their witness, W?derstanding and preaching. They both paid the ultimate price for their commitment to Christ - sli~ding their blood and laying down their lives. We can have no better role models, no better example of what it means to be a Christian Leader. 'St. Peter and St. Paul, pray for liS'
