No DilemmaBy SussmanYou may have heard people say that the book is better than film? Well in this case they would be right, except there was no film, rather cash strapped, serial drama, by the BBC. From what can be gathered, this was a Dr Who episode that was not highly rated by many at the time or since its broadcast. With that said, what we have here is an audio CD novelization with Colin Baker as the narrator. Colin Baker is that little bit older now, but his voice is clear and the narration is rather well done. The story is probably one of the more complex ones. Some people may come away thinking `that was strange' while listening to this story, but there in is the beauty of the Dr Who Universe. There are lovely bits of detail explaining this or that premise. The tone of the story is at humorous but serious in all the right places. I'm sorry for not giving examples, but I do not wish issue any -Spoilers!If you are new to these Dr Who stories, then maybe this is not quite the right story to start with, that said if you are Dr who veteran, I do not believe that you would not enjoy this title. All in all a good tale and I have no hesitation in recommending it and hence my 4 star rating. Enjoy!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The reader's dilemmaBy TAFESA Mount Gambier"The Doctor's dilemma was to tell or not to tell".It might have been better if Eric Saward had chosen not to tell his version of The Twin Dilemma; it is woeful, one of the worst novelisations of the original run of stories. To be fair, Eric was also working from one of the worst (if not the worst) stories in Who history (albeit one he oversaw in his role as script-editor), a garish, kaleidoscopic nightmare, but this heavy handed re-write and editing of the original script does little if anything to improve the televised version. It's hard at times to tell if Saward is attempting a parody of the absurdities and frailties of the Twin Dilemma or just express his obvious contempt of the whole Colin Baker incarnation of the Doctor as overseen by John Nathan-Turner. The book comes across as a sot of sub-Douglas Adams sci-fi satire where, with few exceptions (the Masters Johnson gag and the Senile 9 asides for example) the gags fall terribly flat. Instead we are treated (!) to Saward's usual tropes of sex and violence, with suicide and alcoholism thrown in for good measure, the sort of concepts the New Adventures handled in a far more adult and subtle way. Before turning to television, Eric Saward had once been a farmer. Maybe this explains why this novel comes across like a "lecherous stallion." There's very little heroic about it. Just petty, childish cynicism. Children's book should be more grown up than this and Doctor Who should be better. The biggest dilemma is how it ever got made...1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. • I Am the Doctor, Whether You Like It Or Not
Colin Baker. The Doctor who will be remembered by many readers of this article as the only actor to play the part indubitably to have been dismissed by his BBC employers. Even before this unhappy event his characterisation had proved one of the most controversial in the programme's history. ‘Change, my dear. And it seems not a moment too soon.’ Thus spoke the sixth Doctor as he confronted an incredulous Peri and a more accommodating audience in the final part of The Caves of Androzani on March 21, 1984. However, one could say that Colin Baker had been the Doctor for as long as seven months, as it had been in August 1983 that the BBC had presented him as the Fifth Doctor's successor. It was thought in some quarters at the time that Colin Baker was the ideal Doctor of the BBC executives, thought to be reflected in his much-reported ambition to outlast Tom Baker's seven season tenure, and in the outlandish costume premiered at the January photocall, indicating the contrast between the sixth Doctor's outspoken ebullience and his predecessor's subdued — some may think even bland — character. One criticism of the Peter Davison Doctor had been that he, and the stories in which he appeared, lacked humour. The secret of success appeared to lie in the overstatement for which it was thought the public remembered Tom Baker (still the Doctor to much of the audience in 1983/4) and this was reinforced in Colin's first script. ‘I am the Doctor, whether you like it or not.’ The Twin Dilemma was a decisive break with what had been built up over the previous four seasons, but in a sense fulfilled it.
