Jiří Sobotka Anotace Cílem mé diplomové práce s názvem ,,Forma lity“ bylo pomocí literárních zdrojů přiblížit vývoj otisku lidského těla od druhé poloviny 20. století. V teoretické části mé práce zachycuji umělce, kteří na mne v tomto ohledu měli nějaký vliv a kteří mne inspirovali. V praktické části pak popisuji samotnou tvorbu mého otisku, vytvoření formy ze sádry a následné převedení do betonu. Abstract The aim of this thesis "Forma lity" was to describe - with a help of literary sources- the evolution of the print of human body since the second half of the twentieth century. In the theoretic part of the thesis I notice the artists who influenced and inspired me. In the practical part I describe the ceration of my print itself,the creation of the form from plaster and the follow-up formation to concrete. The 1960s were rife with such moments and as such it is with pleasure that we are able to showcase the collision of three such bodies of energy in one setting for the first time since their inception anywhere in the world with ‘ZERO Gutai Kusama’. The ZERO and Gutai Groups have undergone a radical reappraisal over the past six years largely as a result of recent exhibitions at the New York Guggenheim Museum, Berlin Martin Gropius Bau and Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum amongst others. This escalation of interest is entirely understandable coming at a time where experts and collectors alike look to the influences behind the rapacious creativity we are seeing in the Contemporary Art World right now and in light of a consistently strong appetite for seminal works.

    New York, NY… After World War II, a devastated Japan processed the impact of the atomic bomb and faced a cultural void. It was in this atmosphere of existential alienation that the Gutai Art Association (Gutai Bijutsu Kyokai) – a group of about twenty young artists, rallying around the charismatic painter Jiro Yoshihara – emerged in the mid-1950s to challenge convention. Although keenly aware of Japan’s artistic traditions, the Gutai artists attempted to distance themselves from the sense of defeat and impotence that pervaded their country, and to overcome the past completely with ‘art that has never existed before’. They burst out of the expected confines of painting with daring works that demonstrated a freewheeling relationship between art, body, space and time. Dismissed by Japanese critics as spectacle makers, the Gutai artists nevertheless produced a profound legacy of aesthetic experimentation, influencing Western critics and anticipating Abstract Expressionism, Arte Povera, Fluxus, and Conceptual Art. ‘A Visual Essay on Gutai’ traces efforts by these artists to resolve the inherent contradictions between traditions of painting – the making of images on a flat, framed plane – and the core tenets of a movement that called for experimentation, individuality, unexpected materials, and, perhaps above all, physical action and psychological freedom. On view at Hauser & Wirth New York will be more than 30 works spanning twenty years, all of them exciting responses to the constraints of painting and the limits of time itself.   • Atsuko Tanaka (1932-2005)
    Atsuko Tanaka (1932-2005) Born in Osaka in 1932, Atsuko Tanaka studied Western oil painting at Kyoto Metropolitan University and later continued researching art at the Osaka City Art Museum. In 1954, Tanaka joined Zero Society, a group of young innovative artists including Akira Kanayama, Kazuo Shiraga and Saburo Murakami. During this period, Tanaka was drawn to avant-garde art, and began to make collages and drawings using everyday materials such as calendars and shipping waybills. Along with other members of Zero Society, Tanaka joined the Gutai Art Association in 1955, the first radical artist collective in postwar Japan. Founded by Jiro Yoshihara in 1954, Gutai emphasized the relationship between body and matter, presenting staged performances, theatrical events and large-scale installations as a means of realizing this concept. Gutai’s action-driven activities were highly influential in the international art scene and anticipated many developments in the West such as performance art, minimalism and conceptual art. During her time at Gutai, Tanaka produced experimental pieces that explored the relationship between art, technology and human physicality by means of intangible elements such as light, sound, space and electricity. ‘Bell’ (1955) is one such example, which consisted of 20 electric bells connected by an electrical cord, with a switch that the audience could press to activate the line of bells ringing consecutively. ‘Bell’ was ahead of its time in placing environmental and relational factors at the core of its aesthetics. Another piece pivotal to Tanaka’s career was ‘Electric Dress’ (1956), which was a costume composed of nearly 200 hand-painted lightbulbs and electric cables.

    Fergus McCaffrey is pleased to present a ten-year survey of bold and experimental works by Gutai artist Sadamasa Motonaga Sadamasa Motonaga: 1962–72 November 1–December 21, 2018 Opening Reception: November 1, 2018, 6–8 PM Fergus McCaffrey is pleased to present a solo exhibition surveying a pivotal decade of bold and experimental work by Sadamasa Motonaga (1922–2011). This exhibition, on view at the gallery’s New York location from November 1 to December 21, 2018, will focus on the years 1962–72, when Motonaga was a member of the renowned Japanese avant- garde collective Gutai (1954–72). In the late 1960s and early ’70s, Motonaga both participated in and broke free of Gutai activities, traveling to New York for a year in 1966–67 with his wife, artist Nakatsuji Etsuko; there Motonaga radically altered key philosophical and material components of his practice. Fergus McCaffrey’s presentation shows Motonaga at the crux of Japanese art’s postwar trajectory, transitioning from existential and modernist concerns, embodied in Gutai, toward a new style of apolitical visual expression that incorporated aspects of children’s art and the anime of Japanese popular culture, using painting techniques borrowed from custom car culture and the street. In so doing, Motonaga erased barriers between high and low art and won recognition for a new visual art language that Takashi Murakami would later call Superflat. Motonaga was an early member of Gutai, joining the group in 1955. Together with other first- generation members, including Jiro Yoshihara, Kazuo Shiraga, and Saburo Murakami, Motonaga forged an ethos of artistic experimentation, freedom, and individuality in the wake of the Second World War.

Small ripples interrupt the still water. Suddenly, the conductor of life heatedly raises the baton and a violent outburst of water arises like a tower over us. Then, the storm dies down, it reverberates from afar……. and then, everything starts over with that same whisper ...” Introduction: How it all starts Abstract Expressionism, Informal Art, Zero and Nul Movement. The Beginning, disappearance and return of Zero and the affiliated. After the WWII, revolutionary artists, intellectuals and philosophers declare the bankruptcy of western civilisation and raise their voices in an attempt to call for new cultural beginnings. The grey deck of clouds is split by the first flashes of light. Flashes of light that reflect everywhere, from the United States to Europe and Japan. By who, when and where a specific movement commences is very difficult to determine. These events often run through one another. However, we can determine that Abstract Expressionism – United States - and Informal Art – Europe – originate somewhere between 1945 and 1960. Pollock (1912-1956), Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) and Franz Kline (1910-1962), who belong to the American Abstract Expressionism or Action Painting, has numerous spin-offs in Japan and Europe. Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam saw the rise of the expressionism of CoBrA, with both abstract as figurative elements, followed by the art of the informal artists. [email protected], +1 917 371.5023 Tsuyoshi Maekawa February 27 – April 12, 2014 Opening Reception: Thursday, February 27, 6-8pm Dominique Lévy 909 Madison Avenue New York City Dominique Lévy Gallery is pleased to present an intimate selection of the Japanese artist Tsuyoshi Maekawa’s paintings of the early 1960s. The seven paintings included in the exhibition were executed between 1962 and 1965, Maekawa’s first two years as a Gutai member. Jiro Yoshihara founded the Gutai group in 1954. In the beginning there were seventeen members of the group, and these artists came to be known as the first generation of Gutai. Later in the 1960s several other influential artists, including Maekawa, joined, and they have come to be known as the second-generation Gutai artists. Maekawa was born in Osaka in 1936. He took Yoshihara as his mentor in 1959 and participated in the 8th Gutai Exhibition that same year, finally becoming a group member in 1962. From that point until the group’s eventual dissolution, Maekawa exhibited his work at every Gutai event. “Gutai” can be translated as “concrete.” Yoshihara explained this choice by saying “through artistic activity the freedom of our spirits is made material, as evidence for all to see.” He assembled young artists from the Osaka and Kobe area, and told them “No matter what, do not copy anyone!” and “Do something no one has ever done before!” Putting these ideas into practice, his artists created works spanning performance, painting, sculpture, installation and fashion design.
