Quality: HD More of a one-man massacre than ever before (but just raggedy enough to keep things “real”), Mr. Wick fights in a punishingly brutal style that builds on what director Chad Stahelski invented for the character in the previous films. This is a character who appears to know every single language under the sun, but violence is the most expressive part of his vocabulary (Reeves speaks maybe 100 words in the entire movie). Chinese wushu, Japanese judo, Southeast Asian silat, American Glock… Wick is fluent in them all. But while Stahelski and his team have obviously put a great deal of thought into every frame of fisticuffs, “Parabellum” is so relentless that it often devolves into a numbing flurry of shoulder flips and headshots. If “Chapter 2” bordered on high art for how cleverly it weaved tactical shootouts into public locations (and made every fight operate like an organic bit of world-building), “Chapter 3” is more out in the open. A sneaky little skirmish in Grand Central Station doesn’t live up to Stahelski’s creative potential, even if it’s amazing they pulled off the scene at all. Elsewhere, a motorcycle chase along an empty Manhattan bridge is too rushed and blurry to deliver the “Fury Road” ferocity it teases, and the climactic brawl?—?which makes great use of some familiar faces, and hinges on a funny dynamic of mutual respect—is overwhelmed by a set that looks like a high-end watch commercial, and feels like a watered-down retread of the house of mirrors sequence from the end of the previous movie. Driven by a profound respect for the expressive power of beating someone to death, and empowered by their 54-year-old star’s remarkable skill and commitment, Stahelski and the other poets of percussive carnage that work at his 87Eleven Productions are still (a severed) head and shoulders above the rest of Hollywood’s stunt community. But they can do more with this character, even if it means slowing things down and widening them out. “A Quiet Place Part 2” To that end, it’s telling that the most exciting brawl in “Parabellum” (with the possible exception of a knife fight in a Chinatown antiques store) maintains a more expansive vision, as Mr. Wick fights alongside Halle Berry and some four-legged sidekicks. Traveling to Casablanca for reasons that are never adequately explained, Mr. Wick meets up with an assassin named Sofia who owns a pair of well-trained Malinois dogs; like every other supporting character in this movie, there’s mixed blood between them, and she owes him something for some reason. There are coins and seals and lots of jibber jabber about High Table manners and then “Game of Thrones” star Jerome Flynn shows up as a Bronn-like business type who’s a bit too greedy for his own good (it’s hard to tell what accent Flynn is doing here, but he’s most definitely doing it). When the bullets fly, Sofia’s very good boys lend a valuable assist, and Stahelski has to open things up in order to frame the dogs as they chew on fresh corpses. The sequence is very “John Wick” and horribly terrific in a hand-over-your-mouth kind of way; it does more than any of the tossed-off business with the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) or the Continental Hotel owner (Ian McShane) to whet our appetites for another adventure. Anjelica Huston is also somewhat wasted as the matriarch of a Harlem ballet academy with ties to Wick’s past, but her scenes are so immaculately shot that you’re willing to let it slide. In a film that plays fast and loose with NYC geography, all is forgiven by turning 175th street’s United Palace into the “Tarkovsky Theater,” where people are trained to be killers in between performances of “Swan Lake.” The film’s world-building works best in small doses. A meeting in the middle of the desert is a total dead end, whereas all sorts of fun details can be inferred from Stahelski’s frequent cutaways to the High Table nerve center, where dozens of tattooed and lip-glossed workers monitor Wick’s bounty with an old- fashioned switchboard (imagine a SuicideGirls reboot of “Mad Men” and you’ll have the right idea).

    Volume 15 REVIEW OF DISABILITY STUDIES: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL Issue 1 Editorial “Disability in Popular Horror: A New Trend?” Raphael Raphael, PhD RDS Associate Editor of Creative Works and Multimedia University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Center on Disability Studies Since its inception, film has always been fascinated with disability, although we don’t usually like to mention it. (I have written elsewhere how imagining the disabled body and the experience of having a disability has helped shape the medium of film, in ways largely overlooked or disavowed.) As a genre, horror (which might be the most popular kind of film at the moment) has always been especially interested in disability; the threat of becoming disabled or the threat of being attacked by a character with a visible disability or disfigurement have long been dependable narrative devices. Even when a disabled character is presented as sympathetic, the very experience of having a disability is traditionally imagined as itself a source of terror. For example, in Wait until Dark (1967), we are invited to vicariously experience being a young, sightless Audrey Hepburn faced with threats made horrific precisely by her inability to see. Recently, in just the past year, a very different trend might be emerging in horror films. Although this trend unsettles many years of cultural scripts about disability, it appears to be largely overlooked in the dominant, charged debates about recent horror films. This new trend---if it’s safe to call it that based on the two most popular recent horror films (A Quiet Place and Bird Box)---appears to imagine disability in an entirely new way.

One of many horror films released in 2018 that left deep impression for audiences is ―A Quiet Place‖. McClintock (2018) claimed that the movie has earned more than $300M globally, making strides toward becoming one of the biggest-grossing original scary movies ever. ―A Quiet Place‖ is a silence movie directed by John Krasinski. Because of its silence and quietness, the audiences were forced to focus on the nonverbal signs in the movie. The theme of this movie was family values. One of many important films is mise –en-scene as this communicates indirectly to the audiences. The aim of this study was to know how the theme ―Family Values‖ was visualized in the movie. Using qualitative approach and Semiotics analysis method, this study focused on how the signs and mise-en-scene in the film were interpreted based on the researchers’ interpretation using Metz’ Grand Syntagmatique (1974).     Foushee !1 Victoria Foushee A Quiet Place: A Film Where Sound Speaks Volumes Without a Whole Lot of Volume Foushee !2 John Krasinski’s 2018 film, A Quiet Place, is a horror film that has been praised for being something audiences have never seen before. Because of this, some might even classify it as a “revisionist film” within its genre. According to the textbook written by Maria Pramaggiore and Tom Wallis, a revisionist film is “a genre film that radically modifies accepted genre conventions for dramatic effect,” (456). As for A Quiet Place, its biggest modification would be its usage of sound, or lack there of, to be exact. Director John Krasinski also stars in the film alongside his real-life wife, Emily Blunt, and actors Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds, who play their children. In multiple interviews and press releases, Krasinski has explained that A Quiet Place is in fact a horror film that revolves around the idea of family, however, it is easy to argue that the family, and its physical members, are not the film’s main character, but instead, sound is. There are a few factors that support the claim that sound is indeed the underlying main character of the film, such as: the realization that the audience is not given much information about the family and their background, leaving very little room for character development or connection, and the fact that sound is used strategically to fill the lack of emotional connection, while still being the film’s primary focus of attention. A Quiet Place is unique because it lacks quite a bit of diegetic sound, which is something that has not really been done outside the realm of avant-garde and silent films, and especially in the genre of horror.

The classic example of what not to do occurred June 8, 1984 when Columbia opened Ivan Reitman's action fantasy GHOSTBUSTERS and Warner Bros. launched Joe Dante's action fantasy GREMLINS. Both were going to play best to younger males. Both studios wanted to kick-off that weekend because in those days early June was when most schools had just closed for the summer, so younger males were now able to see movies all week long. GHOSTBUSTERS looked the strongest. Reitman had already directed hit comedies like MEATBALLS (1979 - $43M) & STRIPES (1981 - $85M). His new film had big star power – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd & Sigourney Weaver. GREMLINS' Joe Dante hadn't directed any big hits yet but had gotten lots of attention with his werewolf film THE HOWLING (1981 - $18M). Stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates & Hoyt Axton weren't as well-known as GHOSTBUSTERS' star trio. GREMLINS did have some significant star power behind the camera in executive producer Steven Spielberg, whose Gremlins opened on 6/8/1984, INDIANA JONES & THE TEMPLE OF DOOM had just opened Memorial Day weekend to Directed by Joe Dante and Executive $42.3M and would do $333M worldwide.
