M. ISA SULAIMAN and GERRY VAN KLINKEN The rise and fall of governor Puteh This chapter started life with only one author, M. Isa Sulaiman. Four days after presenting it at the authors’ conference in Jakarta on 22 December 2004, he was among those who died in the great tsunami that struck Aceh (see in memoriam in this volume). Henk Schulte Nordholt and I decided as editors that the orphaned chapter should pass into my foster-care for the final phase. Isa had lived at our house in Leiden for five months in 2003, where he and I talked often about Aceh. I dare to think he would agree with the way it has been taken forward. He is responsible for all the factual material (drawn from local news clippings and interviews with many of those named). My part has mainly been to step back from it and say why it was important to write this, as well as to make explicit some theoretical understandings that lay hidden between the lines. He was particularly impressed with a chapter on Aceh in David Brown’s ‘The state and ethnic politics in Southeast Asia’ (1994). Some of Isa’s masterly command of detail had to be sacrificed in the interests of the less specialized reader. Gerry van Klinken Introduction Understandably enough, most media reporting on Aceh before the tsunami was about the war. It focussed on the two armed parties, Indonesia’s armed forces TNI (Tentara Nasional Indonesia) and the Acehnese liberation army GAM (Gerakan Aceh Merdeka). This has also been true of scholarly work on Aceh.

  • 58 CHAPTER IV FINDINGS and DISCUSSIONS in This Thesis, The
CHAPTER IV FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS In this thesis, the writer analyzes Taufiq Ismail's two selected poems using a qualitative method, i.e. descriptive analysis. In Peirce's Triadic Semiotics analysis, Peircean Semiotics allows the writer to analyze the figurative language of the selected poems. In addition to that, the writer employs a Historical- Biographical approach. As a brief review, Peirce’s Triadic theory has three elements within. There are Representament, Interpretant, and Object. In presenting the analysis, the writer prefers to discuss and explain the Object before going to Interpretant for every part of sign-cracking and interpretations in her analysis. 4.1.Pierce Semiotics Approach Applied in Bagaimana Kalau This part provides a detailed introduction of Bagaimana Kalau poem and what Taufiq Ismail wrote down in his writings. This introduction is provided for those who have not read or seen any of Ismail's work before and to help them grasp an understanding on what certain issues Ismail is interested in and his style of writing poems. Analysis and discussions of this poem can be found starting from page 64. Bagaimana Kalau is a poem written by Taufiq Ismail in 1971. This poem tells about different kinds of realities and it also brings up some real events, e.g. Vietnam War, constant protests or strikes towards the government done by Indonesian citizens, people demanding for their civil rights, better facility, and domestic affairs improvement. There are many parables that Ismail uses in this poem. There are twelve separate verses begin with “what if”. Bagaimana Kalau 58 poem is not divided into stanzas.

  • General Gatot and the Re-Emergence of Pribumi-Ism in Indonesia
ISSUE: 2017 No. 49 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 7 July 2017 General Gatot and the Re-emergence of Pribumi-ism in Indonesia Leo Suryadinata* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY General Gatot Nurmantyo, the Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces, has revived the issue of pribumi-ism (Indigenism) and social inequality in Indonesian society. Gatot will retire next year and many believe will run for high political office in 2019. Gatot’s recent political speeches and his apparent links to political Islam give implicit encouragement to radical Islam and growing inter-ethnic intolerance in Indonesia. Indications that pribumi-ism and radical Islam are on the political rise include the establishment of the Pribumi Party; the proposal to re-introduce indigenism into the Indonesian Constitution; and Ahok’s defeat in the recent Jakarta election. If unchecked, pribumi-ism can undercut political and communal stability again. * Leo Suryadinata is Visiting Senior Fellow at the ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute. 1 ISSUE: 2017 No. 49 ISSN 2335-6677 INTRODUCTION The issue of Indonesian pribumi (or Indonesia asli as it was called earlier, meaning: Indonesian indigenous people) is re-emerging in Indonesia. This time, it was brought up in a speech by General Gatot Nurmantyo, the Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces, given at the National Leadership Conference of the Golkar Party on 22 May 2017 held in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. At the event, when General Gatot was asked to talk about the unity of Indonesia and its challenges and dangers, he took the opportunity to discuss mass immigration from less developed and poorer countries to developed and richer countries and how these countries attempt to stop this flow of migrants.

  • Kata Pengantar

Commentary SHORTLY AFTER his inauguration as the new commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto took the unprecedented step of annulling a reshuffle of senior officers initiated by his predecessor, General Gatot Nurmantyo. The reshuffle was carried out just four days before Gen Gatot was to formally hand over the commandership of the military to his successor on 8 December 2017. In the last three months of 2017, Gen Gatot did two reshuffles: one on 27 October and the other on 4 December. Unlike the reshuffle of 27 October, the 4 December leadership changes were puzzling. The second reshuffle involved 85 officers consisting 46 from the army, 28 from the Navy and 11 from the Air Force. It was baffling why Gen Gatot shifted some officers who previously held strategic appointments to lesser positions.

The wave of so-called militia violence which swept over East Timor in 1999, culminating in massive deportations and destruction in September, was not the spontaneous response of those who favoured integration, but the outcome of a decision by TNI generals to counter the surge of popular support in East Timor for independence, by means of intimidation and violence, and to prevent the loss of the province to the Republic of Indonesia. The campaign of massive destruction, deportation and killings in September was essentially an operation planned and carried out by the TNI, with militia participation, to punish the people of East Timor for their vote against integration. 2. While some of the pro-integrationists, in particular leaders such as Governor Abilio Soares, Joao Tavares and Eurico Guterres, may have enthusiastically welcomed the formation of the militia, and its operational agenda, most of the minority who favoured staying with Indonesia would not have resorted to violence in pursuit of their preference.
