Palabras clave: Exiliados, Nacionalsocialismo, Músicos, Argentina, Asociación Wagneriana Exiled Musicians from Nazi Regime in Argentina (1932-1943). Approaches about their insertion areas. Abstract. Jewish musicians and anti-Nazi refugees during the '30s in Argentina, found in the host society, many areas of expression beyond the spaces of the immigrant community organized. The conservative context in those years, the relative existence of anti-semitic ideas, and migration policies of restrictive cut, did not condition the reception and integration of these refugees.

  • (C. 1960) Promotional Photograph Used in the 1960S
The Other Tchaikowsky Courtesy of Beatrice Harthan André Tchaikowsky (c. 1960) Promotional photograph used in the 1960s. The inscription reads, "To dear Wendy, with affection and fatherly feelings, André T." Wendy -- Beatrice Harthan -- was an older woman who knew many musicians. Through her contacts, André was able to expand his circle of friends. 184 Chapter 6 - Homeless in London (1960-1966) By the summer of 1960, the career launched with such great auspiciousness had changed drastically. It was fragmented and uncertain. Future possibilities in America had ended. Just about everyone whose backing and cooperation were essential had been alienated by André's off-stage behavior. Also, André had formed a dislike approaching mania for the grueling schedules and the social aspects of performing that went along with a big career. During the short span in which André can be considered as having a genuine career as a pianist, the three concert seasons from 1957 to 1960, he played over 500 performances. A simple calculation shows that, on the average, he played a concerto concert or gave a recital every other day for three seasons. This is an almost impossible work load for any musician, one that is bound to take its toll in quality of performance, attitude, and state of health. The machine-like demand for performing every second day absolutely precluded serious thoughts of composing, leaving him frustrated and dissatisfied. He retreated, needing the rest and the healing of a more casual life and the company of friends. A reduced career would provide more time for composing, and more and more he felt that composing was the real imperative in his career and in his life.

The Other Tchaikowsky A biographical sketch of André Tchaikowsky David A. Ferré Cover painting: André Tchaikowsky courtesy of Milein Cosman (Photograph by Ken Grundy) About the cover The portrait of André Tchaikowsky at the keyboard was painted by Milein Cosman (Mrs. Hans Keller) in 1975. André had come to her home for a visit for the first time after growing a beard. She immediately suggested a portrait be made. It was completed in two hours, in a single sitting. When viewing the finished picture, André said "I'd love to look like that, but can it possibly be me?" When I sneaked a glance I saw that his eyes had narrowed and he held his mouth slightly open, as if ready to speak but unable to bring out the words. Finally, he managed a weak, "Would you say that again?" It was April 1985, and I had just arrived in London to enjoy six months of vacation and to fulfill an overdue promise to myself.

A woman announces that Lucero has disappeared, and all go out to search for her. The witch doctor performs his incantations. They encounter a vicious serpent. The men go to get their machetes; the serpent is none other than Lucero, bewitched by the witch doctor. Facundo, suspicious of foul play, tries to stop them. The witch doctor battles with Facundo, wins and slays the serpent, around whose body all execute a dance of triumph. When they go to lift the body, they find it is the body of Lucero. At seeing this, the witch doctor falls, victim of his own spells, and with his death the evil things end.

  • Berg's Worlds
Copyrighted Material Berg’s Worlds CHRISTOPHER HAILEY Vienna is not the product of successive ages but a layered composite of its accumulated pasts. Geography has made this place a natural crossroads, a point of cultural convergence for an array of political, economic, religious, and ethnic tributaries. By the mid-nineteenth century the city’s physical appearance and cultural characteristics, its customs and conventions, its art, architecture, and literature presented a collage of disparate historical elements. Gothic fervor and Renaissance pomp sternly held their ground against flights of rococo whimsy, and the hedonistic theatricality of the Catholic Baroque took the pious folk culture from Austria’s alpine provinces in worldly embrace. Legends of twice-repelled Ottoman invasion, dreams of Holy Roman glories, scars of ravaging pestilence and religious perse- cution, and the echoes of a glittering congress that gave birth to the post-Napoleonic age lingered on amid the smug comforts of Biedermeier domesticity. The city’s medieval walls had given way to a broad, tree-lined boulevard, the Ringstrasse, whose eclectic gallery of historical styles was not so much a product of nineteenth-century historicist fantasy as the styl- ized expression of Vienna’s multiple temporalities. To be sure, the regulation of the Danube in the 1870s had channeled and accelerated its flow and introduced an element of human agency, just as the economic boom of the Gründerzeit had introduced opportunities and perspectives that instilled in Vienna’s citizens a new sense of physical and social mobility. But on the whole, the Vienna that emerged from the nineteenth century lacked the sense of open-ended promise that charac- terized the civic identities of midwestern American cities like Chicago or St.
