The romance between Bollywood and Digital Media A study on the implementation of digital promotional activities in Bollywood Student Name: Dinesh Koendjbiharie Student Number: 357429 Supervisor: Payal Arora PhD MA Media Studies – Media and Business Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam MA Thesis July 2015 0 Version 2.0. - July 2015 The romance between Bollywood and Digital Media A study on the implementation of digital promotional activities in Bollywood ABSTRACT The Indian cinema, often referred to as Bollywood, is when it comes to production scale the largest movie industry in the world. The media and creative industries have been facing a new challenge in the past decade such as, but not limited to, the implementation of new digital media technologies in their digital promotional strategies. This research looks into the promotional activities in contemporary Bollywood that are visible to the consumer. The research question: “How does Bollywood use social media for promotional activities to reach the domestic and global market and possibly strengthen their current promotional strategies?” will be answered through two in-depth case studies on Bollywood blockbuster movie ‘Happy New Year’ and a movie that did exceptionally well ‘Queen’. This research firstly touches upon the changes and the development the industry went through, followed by creating an understanding of the industry’s contemporary position. The first step of the analysis is based on creating an in-depth understanding of the cases and the corresponding data from among others Facebook and Twitter. The following step of the analysis is solely focussed on the adjoining film music industry, in which the attention is paid to the promotion of the film music and also the promotion through the official social media channels of the cases. -

Copyright Piracy and the Indian Film Industry: a “Realist” Assessment
BANERJEE ARTICLE (Do Not Delete) 10/28/2016 3:03 PM COPYRIGHT PIRACY AND THE INDIAN FILM INDUSTRY: A “REALIST” ASSESSMENT ARPAN BANERJEE* Abstract In India, the academic discourse surrounding intellectual property (IP) has been marked by great skepticism. Global IP laws have been viewed as a Western imposition detrimental to national interests. In this paper, I will make the case for a “realist” approach to film piracy in India, i.e., an approach that is rooted in legal pragmatism and draws from the New Legal Realism (NLR) movement. I will suggest a rough template for such an approach, referring to seven broad elements: a) international relations realism; b) contextualization of IP; c) contextualization of copyright; d) the views and interests of the film industry (including creators); e) the working of the pirate economy; f) Permission is hereby granted for noncommercial reproduction of this Article in whole or in part for education or research purposes, including the making of multiple copies for classroom use, subject only to the condition that the name of the author, a complete citation, and this copyright notice and grant of permission be included in all copies. *Alexander von Humboldt Foundation German Chancellor’s Fellow, Bucerius Law School, Hamburg (2016-17); Assistant Professor and Executive Director, Centre for Intellectual Property and Technology Law, Jindal Global Law School, India (on research leave). A shorter version of this paper was awarded first prize at the 9th ATRIP Essay Competition for Young Researchers in Intellectual Property Law (2015), and presented at the 35th ATRIP Congress at Jagiellonian University, Krakow, 26-29 July, 2016. -

Having realized the cultural and economic potential of the regional film industries, several Indian state governments are taking initiatives to effect the growth of their native film sectors. The objective of this publication is to provide an overview of the north Indian film industry in India and highlight key initiatives that may be undertaken by various stakeholders to propel growth.
