VISITING ROTARIANS MEETING RECAP – JULY 20, 2005 (LITERACY MONTH) Gordon Foster – Downtown President Cecil Martin, sat coyly relaxed in the audience over his GUESTS HOSTS quiche while Past President Jerry Starr stalwartly stood in for him at Greg Desme Gary Fachin the BBRC weekly gathering. Jerry’s lovely and supportive bride of one Amy Cooper Paul Cooper year, Robin, was seated at Jerry’s right hand. Don Ray delivered one of Robin Starr Jerry Starr his customary top-cabin invocations, Larry “Soon-To-Be” President Marlene Heise Gina Hayden Mueller lead us in the pledge, and Mike “Who-Would-Have-Believed- Erin Hayden “ “ It” Stepanovich, substituting for Songstress Carol Smith, lent his Dr. Kevin Harvey Jan Callagy heretofore unknown singing talents as he led the club in song. (Speaking Luis Fonseca Jr. Anne Fonseca of Carol, Have the Fine Marshals been Advised or have they Wondered Justin Edelman “ “ About the Itinerary of this Insolent traveling lass?!) Jan Callagy had to flex her muscles and step between our acting president and Jan’s guest, Dr. Kevin Harvey, as the two medical gurus nearly tangled after some pointed barbs from the podium. “Is there a doctor in the house!?” Proud papa, Paul Cooper, hosted his vacationing daughter, Amy, who had just returned from Gilroy, California where she earned a first place trophy at the Mt. Madonna Archery Club tournament. As a member for the last 3 years of the Kern River Archers, Amy (8 ) has distinguished herself by taking 4 statewide first place awards out of the last 6 tournaments while competing with 10-year olds. (Audible mumbles from the audience wondered whether Amy shot an arrow through a garlic perched on pop’s skull!) Gina Hayden also hosted her daughter, Erin, along with another guest Marlene Heise. Sandy Foster’s father-in-law, Gordon Foster, was a guest. Gordon is a Rotarian from the Downtown club. Harry Bryant, was really “working the room”. In addition to substituting for vacationing Carol Smith, Harry invited Gary Fachin to the podium along with his guest, Greg Desme. With great decorum, Greg (owner of Valley Source Mortgage) was welcomed into the club as our newest member. In the accompanying picture Gary is transferring his Rotary pin to Greg in hopes that Greg will one day give the pin to a new member whom he sponsors into BBRC. Rumor is that our Fellowship committee, Mike Daniel and Carl Leech, are already planning a fly fishing outing with new member Greg leading the cast! In addition to dropping the above hint to the Fine Marshals about missing-in-action Carol, another fine point must be made!! While the Beacon editor was dutifully trying to capture a Kodak moment during the meeting, members Karen Wass, Giles Zollar and Dave Spalinger made things extremely distracting by blowing hot air against the editor’s follically-challenged crown. Harry Bryant Greg Desme Gary Fachin Also, everyone gasped at the podium-power-crazed comment from Past President Starr!? During the announcement of the social event to be held at Lengthwise Brewery and Super Go Karts on July 29th, the acting prez stuck in an unabashed advertising plug for his business, Memorial Center. The Fine Marshals did not fare too well on their true/false approach of levying fines on Marianna Buoni, Jason Williamson and charter member Dennis Scott. Being intelligent BBRCers, all knew the correct answer thereby saving themselves a hefty recognition.

A PUBLIC THANK YOU to Harry Bryant who furnished the editor with guest information following the meeting. In heartfelt appreciation, the editor wanted to publish the following note from Harry that accompanied the information he provided:

“Don’t forget to mention in the newsletter the wonderful job Carol’s replacement did and how cute he looked, and how he writes great insurance for a great price!”

Your humble servant,

Harry Bryant "Professional service with a personal touch."

SORRY TO REPORT . . . . Brian Wargo has resigned from the club because of conflicting commitments. Best of luck, Brian, and we hope that your Rotarian loyalty brings you back.

THE PROGRAM David Lari introduced our Program speaker, Rick Van Horne, of Bakersfield’s Arena Football team, the Blitz. After Rick reminded us that he spoke to our club eleven years ago, he gave a good talk about the art of motivating athletes and other people. His mantra, “Don’t take NO for an answer.” Rick is a successful local product. In addition to his Blitz duties, he teaches at Liberty High School and is on the Bakersfield City School Board. He has coached varsity football at BHS, East and Liberty. Dennis Scott visibly winced when Rick announced the fact that Dennis was one of his high school teachers at BHS. When Rick

Page 2 of 3 responded to Doug Burns’ question about the reincarnation of the old-style football drop kick, many younger BBRC members listened intently having never heard of this strange football option. The old (unnamed) members were seen nodding their heads while remembering drop kicks during their stadium-going, pre- television days and watching , , and Gino Marchetti tromping over their opponents. Mike Stepanovich lavished praise on the Blitz program commenting that these types of programs should be supported which in turn help our community. Obviously for spousal appeasement, Stepanovich made a strong, yet nervous statement, “I go to Blitz games for the FOOTBALL!” (What cheerleaders!!??) Our own Dr. Jeff Haynes was commended for his medical efforts keeping the Blitz players “adjusted” and going strong. A loud groan occurred when acting president, Jerry Starr, ended the meeting suggesting that “Doc Haynes does a good job cracking up the team.” Ughhhh! Too many more like that, President Cecil, and forget about this business of past presidents running one meeting per month!!! David Lari Rick Van Horne Dr. Jeff Haynes

CHRISTMAS PARTY HOST WANTED - Mike Daniel and Carl Leech are asking for a BBRC member willing to showcase his/her home and host the BBRC Christmas Party this year on December 2nd? Reply to Mike at [email protected].
