Flashback: Redskins Stunned Colts In 1959 By Michael Richman Posted Sep 29, 2010 The Redskins have recorded their fair share of upsets in their long history. Perhaps the greatest upset win took place on Nov. 8, 1959 at Griffith Stadium when they topped the Baltimore Colts 27-24. Why was it so monumental? Picture David vs. Goliath, or a kid constantly picked on flooring the schoolyard bully. On paper, the Redskins looked like nothing more than a punching bag for their neighbors 40 miles to the north. Consider: the Colts were defending NFL champions, having defeated the Giants in overtime 23-17 in the 1958 title game, regarded by many to be the greatest game in league history. They featured seven future Hall of Famers in quarterback Johnny Unitas, halfback Lenny Moore, receiver Raymond Berry, offensive lineman Jim Parker, defensive linemen Gino Marchetti and Art Donovan, and head coach Weeb Ewbank. Unitas, headed for NFL immortality, was the biggest name among them, and his golden passing arm had thrown for touchdowns in a record 31 straight games. For the Redskins, times were ominous. They were in the early stages of the most miserable period in team history, a stretch from 1959 through the 1961 seasons that consisted of five wins. They had lost three straight games, leaving them 2-4 at the time, and three straight to the Colts. In addition, the Redskins were led by a first-year coach in Mike Nixon, a former assistant in Washington who was known for his pleasant, nice-guy personality. The Redskins did possess some talent, mostly on offense with quarterback Eddie LeBaron, the NFL’s leading passer in 1958, backs Johnny Olszewski, Don Bosseler, Jim Podoley, Ed Sutton and Dick James, and ends Joe Walton, Bill Anderson and Johnny Carson. At kicker, there was the talented "Sugarfoot" Sam Baker. United Press International sportswriter Bob Serling offered this assessment of the Redskins before the season: "No one, from new head coach Mike Nixon on down, can predict whether the ?Skins are going to be terribly good or good and terrible. In many ways, they’re loaded, particularly on offense. In other ways, they’re merely loaded with question marks." By the time they came to the Nation’s Capital, the 4-2 Colts were 10-point favorites over the Redskins, and only those with audacity would have predicted a victory for the Burgundy and Gold. Before a near sell-out crowd of 33,000 at Griffith Stadium, Baltimore took a 3-0 lead in the first period. A Baker field goal put the Redskins up by a touchdown in the third period, but Unitas threw his first of two touchdown passes to end Jim Mutscheller for a 10-10 game. The team then exploded for 31 points in the fourth quarter. LeBaron’s 17-yard scoring throw to Anderson and Sutton’s 22-yard option scoring toss to Walton, sandwiched around another Unitas pass to Mutscheller, left the Redskins leading 24-17. Baltimore tied the game on Moore’s option pass to end Jerry Richardson, plus the conversion, and forced the Redskins to punt with time running out. Unitas, the man credited with inventing the two-minute drill, threw a pass that defensive end Tom Braatz intercepted and returned to the Colts’ 38. Baker entered with 12 seconds left and kicked a 46-yard field goal that sent the fans into delirium as they celebrated the seismic upset. Vice president Richard Nixon, a diehard Redskins fan who attended the game, bolted to the locker room to congratulate the Redskins players, owner George Preston Marshall and another Nixon, Mike. "I have never seen a game to surpass this one," the Associated Press quoted the vice president as saying. One newspaper headline read, "Redskins’ Victory Tremendous; Performance One of Best Ever." As memorable as the game was, the rest of the season may well be forgotten. The Redskins lost their last five games by a combined score of 155-65. They finished 3-9 for the third time in the 1950s with a club that may have been the worst of the three. The 1959 squad scored the fewest points in the NFL, 185, and allowed a league-high 350. The Redskins followed with their two worst seasons in team history, 1-9-2 in 1960 and 1-12-1 in 1961. The Colts, for their part, proceeded to capture their second straight NFL championship and later crafted a nine-game winning streak over the Redskins, one reason there was never much of a rivalry between the two squads. From the time they began playing in Baltimore in 1953 until moving to Indianapolis after the 1983 season, the Colts beat the Redskins 15 of 20 times. For Washington fans, one game will stand out: that day in 1959 when the Redskins performed the unthinkable against those guys with the blue horseshoe on their helmets.     1994 MCKEESPORT TIGERS FOOTBALL The 1994 McKeesport Tigers pitched four shutouts and permitted just 7.8 points per contest. And so it is fitting that the defense is remembered for the goal line stand in the PIAA Quad-A Final against nationally-ranked Downingtown that secured a perfect 15-0 season for Coach George Smith and his club. Brandon Short, who went on to a stellar career at Penn State and with the New York Giants, led the surge that prevented the Whippets’ two 1,000 yard rushers from scoring early in the fourth quarter. With 6:34 remaining, the Tigers’ wishbone triple-option offense churned out a 9-play 67-yard drive chewing 3:50 off of the clock. Glenn Allen’s 31-yard blast set up quarterback Bill Isbir’s 11-yard scamper around the left end that put the Tigers up for good 17-14. A Downingtown fumble on the ensuing kickoff was recovered by Keonte Campbell and sealed the deal on McKeesport’s first undefeated season since 1936, its first WPIAL title since 1938, and its first-ever state crown. That championship season galvanized a community rocked by the collapse of its industrial base as 52 busloads of fans made their way to Altoona to witness the game on a cold and rainy night.     Collecting Lombardi’s Dominating Packers BY DAVID LEE ince Lombardi called Lambeau Field his “pride and joy.” Specifically, the ground itself—the grass and the dirt. V He loved that field because it was his. He controlled everything that happened there. It was the home where Lombardi built one of the greatest sports dynasties of all-time. Fittingly, Lambeau Field was the setting for the 1967 NFL Champion- ship, famously dubbed “The Ice Bowl” before the game even started. Tem- peratures plummeting to 12 degrees below zero blasted Lombardi’s field. Despite his best efforts using an elaborate underground heating system to keep it from freezing, the field provided the perfect rock-hard setting to cap Green Bay’s decade of dominance—a franchise that bullied the NFL for nine seasons. The messy game came down to a goal line play of inches with 16 seconds left, the Packers trailing the Cowboys 17-14. Running backs were slipping on the ice, and time was running out. So, quarterback Bart Starr called his last timeout, and ran to the sideline to tell Lombardi he wanted to run it in himself. It was a risky all-in gamble on third down. “Well then run it, and let’s get the hell out of here,” Starr said Lom- bardi told him. The famous lunge into the endzone gave the Packers their third-straight NFL title (their fifth in the decade) and a second-straight trip to the Super Bowl to face the AFL’s best. It was the end of Lombardi’s historic run as Green Bay’s coach.

If you take that further and consider the handful of pro footballers who successfully combined an athletic and medical career, then you really have an elite group. Nonetheless, from the earliest days of the National Football League there have been players who have achieved that lofty height. Joe Alexander, an All-America center at Syracuse and later captain of the New York Football Giants, was one of the first with dual careers. Johnny Mohardt, a quarterback from Notre Dame, was another player/physician pioneer. Eddie Anderson, an end at Notre Dame who later became an outstanding college coach, was still another who combined medicine and pro football in the early 1920s. Although the first three NFL doctors are no longer living, two of them were members of a very exclusive group -- The Chicago Bears Doctors Club. Although the group was not formally chartered, it is more than a coincidence that nearly half of the players up to the 1960s who went on to become doctors played for the Bears.     Dan Hampton - Biography Dan Hampton also known as "Danimal" was born September 19, 1957 and is a retired Hall of Fame American football defensive tackle who played twelve seasons for the Chicago Bears from 1979 to 1990 in the National Football League. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002. Previously hosted pre- and post-game shows for the Bears on WGN Radio in Chicago. College Career Hampton played college football at Arkansas and was drafted in the first round of the 1979 NFL Draft by the Bears. He was part of a Razorback team that thumped the highly favored Oklahoma Sooners in the 1978 Orange Bowl by a score of 31-6. Several key Razorback players had been suspended for the game by Arkansas Head Coach Lou Holtz which left the team short-handed. The fired up Razorbacks charged from the locker room in a fashion that the media noticed. When asked why the team came out of the locker room in such a hurry the wry Hampton answered, "Coach Holtz said the last eleven out of the locker room will start". As a senior Hampton was an All-American as he logged 98 tackles (18 behind the line of scrimmage). He was also named the Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1978. In addition, that same season, Hampton was named by the Houston Post the SWC Player of the Year.[2] As a junior he had 70 tackles (8 for a loss). In 1976, as a sophomore, Hampton made 48 tackles (2 for losses) and recovered two fumbles.
