JAZZ WRITING? I am one of Mr. Turley's "few people" who follow The New Yorker and are jazz lovers, and I find in Whitney Bal- liett's writing some of the sharpest and best jazz criticism in the field. He has not been duped with "funk" in its pseudo-gospel hard-boppish world, or- with the banal playing and writing of some of the "cool school" Californians. He does believe, and rightly so, that a fine jazz performance erases the bound• aries of jazz "movements" or fads. He seems to be able to spot insincerity in any phalanx of jazz musicians. And he has yet to be blinded by the name of a "great"; his recent column on Bil- lie Holiday is the most clear-headed analysis I have seen, free of the fan- magazine hero-worship which seems to have been the order of the day in the trade. It is true that a great singer has passed away, but it does the late Miss Holiday's reputation no good not to ad• LETTERS mit that some of her later efforts were (dare I say it?) not up to her earlier work in quality. But I digress. In Mr. Balliett's case, his ability as a critic is added to his admitted "skill with words" (Turley). He is making a sincere effort to write rather than play jazz; to improvise with words,, rather than notes. A jazz fan, in order to "dig" a given solo, unwittingly knows a little about the equipment: the tune being improvised to, the chord struc• ture, the mechanics of the instrument, etc. -

This is the Smithsonian NEA Jazz Masters oral history interview with Hubert Laws in his home in Los Angeles, California, conducted by Anthony Brown and Ken Kimery. Good afternoon, Hubert. How are you doing? Laws: I’m fine, man. Brown: The last time I saw you was at the NEA Jazz Masters awards in January. You provided the first musical number, a duet with Kenny Barron, playing Stella by Starlight. I have to say, that was the high point of the evening. It could have stopped after that. That was, oh, incredible. Laws: It’s kind of you to say that, because I felt very good about that collaboration with Kenny. It’s so interesting, because we were supposed to have had a rehearsal that morning. We met in this little room on the side and we ended up – I said, “You know what? Let’s do – let’s just play for a while, and then we’ll lead on into Stella.” I said, “We may do that, or I may do another tune.” He said okay. That’s what I love about professional guys like him. They’re so flexible. We didn’t know what we were going to play in the beginning. -

Kurs: BA 1002 Examensarbete, master, jazz, 30 hp 2021 Konstnärlig masterexamen i musik, 120 hp Institutionen för jazz Handledare: Klas Nevrin Marína Ósk Þórólfsdóttir A Musical Personality A quest towards discovering my identity in music and developing it into a musical personality Skriftlig reflektion inom självständigt, konstnärligt arbete Det självständiga, konstnärliga arbetet finns dokumenterat i KMH:s digitala arkiv. Abstract The purpose of my research was to develop and strengthen my personality in music as a vocalist, so I would be able to freely let it out during any musical encounter. My base for the research was a duet with guitarist Mikael Máni Ásmundsson, but it was during a rehearsal with him that I realised for the first time I even had a musical personality – that I liked. Before, I had often felt uncomfortable and tense when playing music and not sure who I was as an artist. I limited myself to working with West Coast jazz, jazz standards, and lyrical improvisation, and I used various methods such as transcribing, ear-training in multiple forms, and improvisation exercises, to develop my musical personality. The research resulted in a nine-song album that Mikael Máni and I created in 2020 under the artist-name Tendra. That album is my examination project. I learned a great deal from the experience. I gained self-confidence, independence trust and calmness during this journey, and at last I feel comfortable with who I am as an artist – my musical personality has finally moved in. Bledsoe Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Assistant Professor of Flute Donna Shin, Chair Instrumental Performance, School of Music The harp has endured a tenuous relationship with the genres of jazz and American popular music throughout history. While a few harpists have enjoyed successful and significant careers in these fields, the harp is largely absent from mainstream jazz and American pop. The purpose of this dissertation is to ascertain a definitive cause for such exclusion and use this information to identify a feasible path toward further integration of the harp in jazz and American pop music. This paper examines the state of the harp in jazz and American pop from various angles, including historical perspective, analytical assessment, and a study which compares harpists’ improvisational abilities to those of their mainstream jazz instrumentalist counterparts. These evaluations yield an encompassing view of the harp’s specific advantages and detriments in the areas of jazz and American pop. The result of this research points to a need for specialization among harpists, particularly in defining new styles. It is evident that harpists’ careers generally necessitate a working knowledge of various styles of music. -

PARTE SECONDA - Per una rivalutazione sul piano storico e artistico della figura di Paul Desmond 1) PAUL DESMOND E LA STORIA DEL JAZZ Per rivedere il ruolo di Desmond nella storia del jazz si deve partire da un assunto: il contributo di Paul Desmond è stato decisivo per il successo del Dave Brubeck Quartet. Questa tesi, già documentata nella Biografia, è avallata dall’opinione di moltissimi musicisti, critici ed operatori – alle già citate dichiarazioni di George Wein1 si aggiungano qui quelle non lusinghiere ma contestuali di Franco Fayenz: “Il suo successivo quartetto (di Brubeck), che gli ha dato la celebrità, è vissuto sulla ripetizione di una formula sempre uguale, basata più che altro sulla dizione raffinata del saxofono alto di Paul Desmond”2, quelle di Porter e Ullman: “…(Desmond) died of lung cancer in 1977. Brubeck continues as a leader, with his sons and others, but has never found such a perfect foil and counterpart”3 ed il significativo titolo dell’artcolo di Nat Hentoff dedicato a Desmond nel numero del 18 aprile 1952 di Down Beat:“Altoist Paul Desmond Is a Vital Factor in Success of Brubeck Quartet”4. Il passo successivo è stabilire se e quanto è storicamente rilevante il successo del quartetto di Brubeck. Arrigo Polillo sembra ritenerlo tale, dato che al momento di parlare delle avanguardie degli anni ‘60 osserva: “D’altronde gli anni in cui la musica afro-americana imboccò risolutamente nuove 1 “…In un certo senso l’asse portante era nello stile di Brubeck. Era questo che conferiva al gruppo la sua fisionomia, ma era il suono di Desmond a costituirne l’attrattiva”.
