    T’OUNG PAO T’oung Pao 96 (2010) 125-164 www.brill.nl/tpao Emerging from Anonymity: e First Generation of Writers of Songs and Drama in Mid-Ming Nanjing* Tian Yuan Tan (School of Oriental and African Studies) Abstract is article traces the first generation of writers of songs and drama in Nanjing who emerged from the anonymous context of early Ming court entertainment and established their name and reputation in the second half of the fifteenth century. ese writers—Shi Zhong (1437-after 1516), Chen Duo (1454?-1507?), and Xu Lin (1462- 1538)—represented a different mode of writing songs and drama. For them it was no longer a professional occupation, as in the case of the court performers, but became part of their cultural and social life. e extent to which our knowledge of these first- generation qu writers depends on local sources and on acts of remembrance by later Nanjing authors is also examined. By situating the study in the commercial center of Shanghai, the dissertation argues that the transformation of media industries exists as part of a delicate compromise between China’s hexie shehui (harmonious society—a euphemistic explanation for government control of media content) and the forces of global capital. To form a foundation for future scholarship in the fields of media studies and Chinese studies, the dissertation articulates the complexity of film co-production in the ten years between China’s accession to the WTO and the PRC’s 2011 twelfth five year plan. The dissertation introduces three central concepts that are crucial to understanding the growth of media collaboration between China and the U.S. These include the role of ii the urban brand, the importance of latter day compradors (maiban), and the growth of global production ecosystems in the PRC.

The materialist historical approach contributes to revealing the importance of gardens’ economic functions in the shift of garden culture, but is inadequate in explaining the successive burgeoning of small plain gardens in the 17th century. This article integrates the aesthetic and materialist perspectives and situates the cultural transition in the concrete social and cultural context in the late Ming period. Beginning with describing a taste change and an expansion in the number of gardens, this article focuses on the small plain garden phenomenon by exploring the unique role that the arts (e.g., poetry and painting) played. A series of artistic criteria were established in the late Ming period. The application of these aesthetic rules to gardens enabled more people to own gardens. This is process that economic requirements for owning gardens were lowered, giving way to the aesthetic appreciation and exploration of literati individuals’ artistic talents.

Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, it scrutinizes the ideological, artistic, and industrial contexts as well as the distinctive textures of Chinese comedy films produced in the so-called “Seventeen Years” period (1949-1966). Taking comedy film as a contested site where different ideologies, traditions, and practices collide and negotiate, I go beyond the current canon of Chinese film studies and unearth forgotten films and talents to retrieve the heterogeneity of Chinese cinema. The varieties of comedy examined—mostly notably the contemporary social satires in the mid-1950s, the so- called “eulogistic comedies,” and comedian-centered comedies in dialect and period comedies, as well as lighthearted comedies of the late 1950s and the early 1960s— problematize issues of genre, modernity, nation, gender, class, sublimity, and everyday ii life in light of the “culture of laughter” (Bakhtin) within a heavily politicized national cinema.

These works provide a focal point for reflection on the activities of popular writers, publishers, literary magazines, and the business of literature in early 20th Century China. The first chapter examines preceding studies of The Money Demon, as well as appreciative poems and prefaces, poem contests, and records of poets. As a more detailed supplement to Michael Hock’s theory of “style,” it shows how Chen Diexian used poems to form his personal relations and accumulate literary reputation. The second chapter is about the publisher China Library and the correspondence schools for classical literature. Appropriating the theory of “commodifying classical literature,” this chapter explores the development of this less known but important publisher, the designs of its four magazines, and the readership of “Butterfly” literature. The third chapter presents a close reading of The Money Demon that illuminates the marginalized status and identity crisis of the “Butterfly” writers. Il settore dell’animazione cinese riesce a produrre dei contenuti destinati sia al mercato interno sia estero su commessa dei grandi produttori giapponesi, americani ed europei. Oggi la Cina è diventata il primo produttore al mondo di animazione perché considera questo tipo di industria come uno dei suoi più importanti settori produttivi e perciò ha promosso delle azioni politiche volte a sostenere le scuole di formazione per gli addetti al settore e il mondo della produzione e distribuzione. Secondo molti studiosi il governo attua queste politiche per garantirsi non solo profitti economici ma anche culturali. Di fatto incentiva la formazione ideologica dei giovani al fine di rafforzare la propria identità nazionale (Qing 2006, Tan 2006, Lu Bin 2013). Il presente lavoro di ricerca parte dalle origini dell’industria dell’animazione cinese per arrivare alla situazione attuale che vede la sua importante presenza nei mercati esteri. L’obiettivo della tesi è quello di individuare le variabili principali e le contraddizioni che caratterizzano la situazione attuale dell’animazione cinese nonché i problemi relativi al mercato interno e internazionale e al rapporto tra i prodotti nazionali e prodotti di importazione.
