Email(2):[email protected] Page 1 Website:http://whitlock.castlewebs.net/wfa/index.htm There have been some interesting achievements this quarter!! I finally finished entering the 479 pages of 1900 US census extracts that were sent in by Chuck Rockett in the 1990's. Only a couple of states left to do including Pennsylvania as they were sent in earlier and were not part of the X624 item. I also worked my way through the death certificate list sent in by Lawrence Otis and Marilyn Finke. I downloaded copies into our certificate collection and then cross referenced and catalogued all 122 of them. This added a great deal of information to the Missouri families. I am currently working my way through the same type of list for Utah. I have downloaded the certificates but have not catalogued them yet. Just to keep things interesting I have started to download the British 1881 census entries into our British County census files. This will give us the most complete census files yet and make all this census information available for download through the website. The Whitlock Birth Register is now entered to 1862 and completed with maiden names of mothers (where known) and family codes to 1850.

There have been some major additions to the WHITLOCK09 chart, The Whitlocks of Connecticut. Willard R. Carter sent in some great research done from 1930 to 1940 by G. Evans Hubbard into the families of Wilton, Connecticut (R2583). This material connected several of the families shown on the chart as “Also from Connecticut” and filled in many blanks. Willard has also donated a copy of Wilton Connecticut, Three Centuries of People, Places and Progress by Robert H. Russell 2004 (R2584). There are many references to the Whitlock family in this publication and I look forward to reviewing and cataloguing it.

Still on the Connecticut families, I have received several large files from Cliff McKinstry (X6175-X6177) detailing his extensive research in to his part of the family. While I have listed these items, I have started cataloguing them and can already see there is a great deal of detail in them that is not currently in our files. One of the files Cliff sent in is all the census locations for his part of the Connecticut family. This will also add to our census data.

Other highlights in this issue include the latest census copies sent in by Joan Whitelock (R2571-R2573) filling in more blanks for the Whitlocks and Whitelocks of Devon and Wales.

I have done a short article for this issue based on the information that Norman Peters sent us on John Whitlock of Virginia who served in the 3rd Virginia regiment in the Revolutionary War. Mr. Peters is trying to determine if this John Whitlock is the one who married Christian Beasley in 1786 (R2574).

I was interested to see that the theme from the movie “” was written by Tom Whitlock. Anybody know how Tom fits into the Whitlock family? (R2576) The information from Marilyn Finke on the Whitlocks of South Dakota added additional information to that family (R2580-2). Patrick Lynch also found us a 1927 booklet on the Whitlock cars on eBay. A great addition to our files (R2585).

Chris Geoghegan continues to plug away on the Essex and Hertfordshire Whitlocks (X6091-6). I have included a Main Line for Chris in this issue. After many revisions, I think we finally have it correct.

Harry Lee Whitlock sent in an example of a family trivia quiz (X6125) that was put together based on his part of the family. An interesting concept if someone is planning a family event, such as a reunion or a large family thanksgiving event.

Subscription renewals have been coming in well. Please note the last two numbers on the top line of your address label are your subscription paid to date. eg “07" means I have received your renewal for this year. Those that have not renewed for 2007 will receive a reminder with this issue of the Newsletter and I hope you will be willing to support our research for another year.

One of the downsides of this research is you have to advise people from time to time that the family chart they are so proud of is incorrect. Over the years we have discovered that the printed versions of one of the Virginia families as well as one for the Connecticut family had errors. While the error in the Connecticut family is only that the John Whitlock who came to America in the 1640's did not marry Rose as is shown in many of the printed versions, the Virginia chart error is more serious and the line of descent is quite different

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.26 No.1 Mar 2007 Page 2 from that published in the printed versions. In the latter case, Revolutionary War pension documents show that the line is incorrect but does not show which line of descent is correct. In this case we had three different Thomas Whitlocks the line could descend through and now we only have two.

The Whitelockes of Jamaica had always thought they descended from General John Whitelocke (1758-1833) as he was sent there with his regiment in 1782 and married there. His wife was Mary, the daughter of William Lewis of Hardley, Jamaica. They were married at St.Catherine’s, Jamaica April 8, 1783. Unfortunately our research showed that General John Whitelocke and his wife Mary only had three daughters and a son William Spencer Whitelocke who married but had no children. Records in London show the family actually descends from Peter & Hanah Whitelock of London who were married in the 1720's.

The only advise I can give to people is get copies of the original sources and look at the evidence and then come to your own conclusions. If you agree and have to make a change, do the work to get to know all you can about your new ancestors. You will soon be equally as proud of them as you were of the ones you now know were not your ancestors.

Information continues to flow in and our knowledge of the family expands every year. For the first time in years I started a new chart. The WHITLOCK89 chart details the descendants of William John Whitelock and his wife Mary Ann Waters who were married at St.Marylebone, London January 23,1820. I have known about this family since the 1960's when I met Australian descendant Trafford Whitelock. I have still not been able to place them with any of the other families in the computer and it was time to set up a new chart.

Amazingly this is the 93rd issue of the Whitlock Family Newsletter. I hope you continue to find them of interest. Good luck in your own area of research. JOHN WHITLOCK, 3RD VIRGINIA REGIMENT Norman R. Peters, Historical Researcher from Washington, D.C. with Children of the American Revolution (CAR) emailed the Whitlock Family Association to ask about John Whitlock who shows being a member of the 3rd Virginia Regiment and fought during the Revolutionary War. Mr. Peters is trying to verify an application that traces descent from the John Whitlock who married Christian Beasley. The question is “are these two John Whitlocks one and the same?”

Mr. Peters sent us copies of John Whitlock’s Revolutionary War file and unfortunately it does not tell us much. John Whitlock shows on the Company Pay Roll for Capt. Robert Powell’s Co., in the 3d Virginia Reg’t of Foot commanded by Col. Thomas Marshall for:

February 1777 (one month 6/23 Dollars), April 1777 (one month 6 2/3 Dollars), May 1777 (one month 6 2/3 Dollars, £ 2), June 1777 (one month 6 2/3 Dollars), July 1777 (one month 6 2/3 Dollars), August 1777 (one month 6 2/3 Dollars), September 1777 (6 2/3 Dollars),

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.26 No.1 Mar 2007 Page 6 October 1-31, 1777 (6 2/3 Dollars £2), November 1777 (October 31-December 1) (6 2/3 Dollars £2) December 1777 (one month 6 2/3 Dollars).

John Whitlock is on the Muster Roll for this Regiment for:

June 1777 roll dated August 4,1777, July 1777 roll dated Aug.4,1777, August 1777 roll dated September 2,1777 (on ?t Guard), September 1777 roll dated Oct.14,1777 (absent Wounded at Bethlehem), October 1777 roll dated Nov.4,1777 (Absent Wounded at Bethlehem), November 1777, roll dated December 22,1777 (he was absent On furlough).

He shows on the Company Muster Roll for Captain Robert Powell’s Co. of the 3d Virginia Regiment commanded by Lieut. Col. William Heth for:

December 1777 on roll dated Jany 8,1778 for 2 years and was On furlough, January 1778 roll dated February 3, 1778 2 years, On furlough, February 1778 roll dated Valley Forge March 7,1778 Dischd February 14th

He shows on the Company Pay Roll for Captain Robert Powell’s Co. of the 3d Virginia Regiment commanded by Lieut. Col. William Heth for:

January 1778 From 1 Jan to 1 Feb, one month, 6 2/3 Dollars £2

John Whitlock also shows on the Pay Roll of Capt Holman Rice’s Compy of Foot in the Regt of Guards Commd by Fras. Taylor, Commencing 1st Apl & Terminating the 31st May (Inconclusive), 1779 for:

Roll dated June 7, 1779 Commt of pay April 1 two months 6 2/3, £4

----

These records therefore show John Whitlock served as a Revolutionary War soldier from at least February 1777 to about April 1779. They also indicate that he was wounded at Bethlehem. The fact there are no pension records for John Whitlock appears to indicate neither he or any possible spouse likely lived long enough to qualify for a Revolutionary War pension. This fits for the John Whitlock who married Christian Beasley as he died in January 1807, age 46. It is unknown when Christian Beasley or John’s second wife Tabitha Whatley died. The family moved to Georgia and shows in the Columbia Co. records in 1794 and the Oglethorpe Co., records in 1797. This John Whitlock shows on our WHITLOCK33 chart

Our thanks for Norman Peters for these records and hopefully one day we will be able to determine if we have the correct John Whitlock who served in the 3rd Virginia Regiment.

ALEXANDER WHITLOCK (1840-1919) The following is some interesting speculation from Harry Whitlock on how Alexander Whitlock may have come meet and marry his wife Mary Catherine Bowyer. The couple were married Jun.16,1865 in Morgan Co., Illinois.

“I found out some interesting things on our family history. Alexander Whitlock married Mary Catherine Bowyer, and I often wondered how these two got together given their ten years difference in ages. Well, I think I have a plausible story.

According to the 1860 US Census the Bowyer’s and the Whitlock’s were ‘next door neighbors’ to the extent that farmers are neighbors. They are listed right by each other on the records. The Bowyer head of household was James E. Bowyer and the Whitlock head was Johnson Whitlock.

Alexander first joined the Union Army in May 1861, enlisting in the 14th Illinois Infantry Regiment. By the end of September or October he was medically discharged and returned home. In 1862 he had regained his health and joined the 101st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He initially enlisted in company E, but was

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.26 No.1 Mar 2007 Page 8

transferred to company G. Also joining this regiment was his neighbor, James E. Bowyer, husband of Althea, and father of Mary Catherine (Alex’s future wife) and Sarah M. James was assigned to company H.

The 101st initially went to Cairo, then served in military operations in the siege and capture of Vicksburg, MS. At one point in the campaign five companies were captured by Confederate soldiers at the town of Holly Springs. These companies were guarding the town inside a perimeter of other Union soldiers, and for whatever reason, these other soldiers dropped their guard and the Confederate’s managed to get into the town. However, Alex’s and James’ companies were not among these because their two companies, along with two others, were guarding the railroad. They managed to fall back to the main Union lines and helped defend the lines when the Confederates attacked.

Since this unit was not up to full strength, it was attached to the 14th Illinois Infantry (the unit Alexander initially joined!) and performed scouting missions for that regiment. In March 1863 the companies were detailed among several gunboats. Company G was assigned on the “Switzerland” and H on the “Lafayette”. Here is where family records and official military history become murky.

The official history of the regiment states that company G and the Switzerland successfully ran the blockade at Vicksburg under fire, which allowed Grant to put forces south of Vicksburg. After Vicksburg fell General Grant supposedly furloughed the entire company for their bravery! The official record provides no further information on the Lafayette, except to say that all these boats and their attached infantry were busy.

Our family records, namely the framed certificate I have, state he served on the Lafayette. Also, his obituary states that. To further mix up trying to decipher the truth of the matter, there is a mark on one of the documents in my copy of his service record that looks like someone tried to indicate he was in both company H and G. I don’t know if there is any way I can prove this, but what I think possibly happened is that there was an unofficial transfer of him from G to H. This could have been at his request to be closer to James Bowyer or other friends in H Company. That’s why the tidbits of personal information we have say he served on the Lafayette, not the Switzerland. Also stated in the personal records are statements that say he was on the Lafayette as it ran the blockade at Vicksburg. It’s possible that Alexander got the names mixed up, but I don’t think that’s possible. The esprit and unit pride soldiers develop in their unit, or in this case, their gunboat, made Alexander proud of his service with these men, and he would always want to say he served with them. I’m the same way about my service with the unit I was with in the Gulf War.

One other possibility is that the official records overlook mentioning that the Lafayette also ran the blockade, which is something I plan on researching.

After the fall of Vicksburg the regiment was sent up the Ohio River, then down through Kentucky and Tennessee to help capture Atlanta and defeat the south. Somewhere along the way Alexander fell ill again, and he was admitted in the military hospital at New Albany, Indiana. The rest of the 101st , including James Bowyer, continued on. The unit was involved in the bloody fighting at Chattanooga and other places, and it was at Dallas, also called New Hope Church, that James E. Bowyer was killed in action on 25 May 1864. I could find no record of where he was interred, but we have to assume it is in that vicinity. Perhaps I’ll be able to find some sort of record when I receive his service record, which I just recently ordered.

The regiment continued campaigning and fighting through Georgia and the Carolinas, into Virginia, and finally, participated in the Grand Review on May 24, 1865. From there the regiment was either marched or transported by railroad or boat to Springfield, IL, where it was disbanded. Oh, but that must have been a powerful, emotional moment for all those veterans. I wonder if Alexander made his way to Springfield to welcome his comrades home?

In any case, it must have been an time of great happiness and great sorrow. James Bowyer and many others, killed in battle or by disease, were not coming home. Althea Bowyer and her two girls must have been so happy to see so many friends and neighbors come home, and so sad their father didn’t.

I can’t help but think that when the Bowyer’s learned their husband and father was dead, that Alexander, not only being a neighbor, but a veteran of the same regiment as James, offered his condolences and was very sad himself, knowing how brave James was. Perhaps Alexander and Mary found strength and comfort in each other, and despite the ten years of difference in age, soon developed a deep love and were married.”

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.26 No.1 Mar 2007 Page 11 FRANCIS WHITLOCK (1806-1883) OF ESSEX Sylvia Mort send an interesting bit of Whitlock trivia concerning an early train accident in Essex:

The Earliest train accident of which a record survives occurred at Yeldham on 20th January, 1877, when a pair of horses belonging to a Mr. Francis Whitlock were being driven across the track. The leading horse was struck and killed by an oncoming train but the carters had the presence of mind to jump clear and so escaped injury. After this accident it was made a rule that a warning whistle should be given by trains approaching the crossing, which was on a curve.

-----

Francis Whitlock is part of the WHITLOCK08 chart. He was baptized in Little Yeldham, Essex June 1, 1806 and died at Great Yeldham October 12, 1883. While the horses mentioned in the above article belonged to Francis Whitlock it is assumed that he was not driving the horses at the time or the article would have described the actions of Mr. Whitlock. Francis Whitlock was the son of Thomas Whitlock & Elizabeth Quy. He married twice, first to Eliza Brown in 1832. Eliza died in 1843 age 32 and in 1847 Francis married Sarah (Steward) Gibbons. Francis and Eliza Whitlock had three daughters and one son. The son Walter Whitlock (1841-1924) of Poole Farm became a successful farm machinery manufacturer. [See WFN Sep 2001 re Dinkum Dumper] and his great-grandson Alan Carleton Whitlock (1907-1966) moved the business into innovative earth moving equipment that was way ahead of its time in the 1950's and 1960's.

Our thanks to Sylvia for this item.

3. NORRIS2 HARVEY (WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1781 in Culpepper County, Virginia, and died August 28, 1850 in Madison County, Kentucky. He married NANCY BAKER LOGSDON December 24, 1804, daughter of UNKNOWN BAKER and SUSANNAH LACKEY. She was born 1783 in Virginia, and died 1851 in Madison County, Kentucky.

Notes for NANCY BAKER LOGSDON:

Story has it that Nancy and her mother Susannah Lackey lived near Mammoth Cave. They were attacked by indians who killed Mr. Baker and captured Susannah and Nancy. Susannah managed to escape. The indians were fascinated by Nancy's flaming red hair and planned to adopt her. Her ears had been pierced with 9 holes each. A trader named Whitlock saw her in the village and paid $500 for her and returned her to her family. (From "Logsdon, the Amazing Family").

------

It is not clear who the“Trader” Whitlock shown above would have been. The date is likely around 1790 as Nancy was born in 1783 and was likely a small child at time she was taken by the indians. Mammoth Cave is now in central Kentucky but was part of Virginia until 1792 when the Commonwealth of Kentucky was formed. One of the earliest Whitlocks in Kentucky was Nathaniel Bacon Whitlock who was there when Kentucky was formed. Nathaniel was a tobacco grower, likely from Hanover Co., Virginia and his name appears on an October 26,1791 petition to the Virginia legislature requesting the replacement of tobacco warehouses that were burnt by the British in 1781. Nathaniel was a member of the “corn stalk” Militia of Kentucky from 1792 to 1811 and is shown living at the falls of the Ohio in December 1798. The Jefferson County Court Books contain many references to Nathaniel Bacon Whitlock from 1796 on. Entries include Nathaniel being granted several licences to keep a tavern in Louisville, he also appraised estates, recorded deeds, was appointed an inspector of mills and a tobacco inspector. He shows on the 1800 Tax List for Jefferson Co. and on July 20,1800 Nathaniel married Sally Reager in Jefferson Co., Kentucky. Records show Sally Reager died before 1804. Nathaniel appeared before the Court Nov.5,1804 to prove “that his infant son George Whitlock, issue of his marriage with Sally Reagar, daughter of Jacob Reagar, dec’d, and that Henry B. Reagar and Maria Reagar, are the heirs and representatives of the said Jacob Reagar, dec’d.” Nathaniel left his young son, George at his death in Louisville December 12, 1809. His will leaves his estate to his brother George for “benefit and education of my son George”. While we have not yet been able to determine who Nathaniel Bacon Whitlock’s parents were he is shown as likely part of the WHITLOCK23 family. Whether Nathaniel Whitlock was “trader” Whitlock is not clear but he was certainly in the area at the time. SOURCES: X6180; R192/66; R678; R1810; UBC83-85
