Physical Description: 16.26 linear feet Repository: Metropolitan Government Archives of Nashville & Davidson County, 615 Church Street, Nashville, TN 37219

Biographical/Historical Note: George Demetrius Clements was born in Union County, Kentucky, where he was a teacher. There he met his wife Mary Serena Melborne, and they moved to Davidson County, around 1881. They had five sons: Robert Muir Clements, founder of the Clements Paper Company located in Nashville; Charles Runcie Clements, Jr., founder of the National Life & Accident Insurance Company located in Nashville; John Clements, who became a priest and died around 1905 near Mobile, Alabama; Melborne Clements and Paul Clements, who graduated from Vanderbilt Medical School in 1895. In 1899, Paul married Effie Pointer Skillero of Pulaski, Tennessee, and in 1903 he began working with the Philippine Health Service. Effie died in 1911 during a visit to see her husband in the Philippines. In Manila, Paul Clements met Maria Trinidad Munoz, whom he married in 1915. They had two children: George Paul and Mary Alice Clement, who spent their childhood and teen years in Manila. Paul Clements died in Manila in 1918 after working in the Culion leper colony.

George Paul Clements (full name George Joseph Paul Rupert Valentine Clements) at one time went by George Joseph Clements, then G. Paul Clements for the remainder of his life. His early education was in Manila, and then he began his college years at the University of St. Thomas. Desiring to move to his father’s home state, he transferred to Vanderbilt University, where he graduated in 1938 with an engineering degree. He was then employed by Hart, Freeland and Roberts (Nashville) as a civil engineer. In 1940, he married Katherine Elizabeth Kennedy, daughter of Thomas P. Kennedy and Estelle H. Allen Kennedy. Clements served in World War II with Army Air Intelligence from 1942 to 1945, and after the war was co-owner of Walter Keith & Co., where he remained until the mid-1950s. He later worked for Phillip and Buttorf Corp., and then became co-owner of O’Bryan Brothers with his brother-in-law, Robert M. Kennedy, in 1967. GPC and KKC lived in Nashville and had one son, George Paul Clements, Jr. (1947)

George Paul Clements, Jr. attended school at Woodmont School and Battle Ground Academy, and continued his education at Vanderbilt University and George . He currently lives in Williamson County.

Scope and Content: This collection has two separate parts: the Clements and Kennedy family records and the O’Bryan brothers’ business records. Family records are as follows: with deep roots in Nashville, Tennessee, the union of George Demetrius Clements and Mary Serena Melborne created a family in varied ways to the city of Nashville. Through marriages, the records widen to include the family’s personal lives and varied professions including teaching, business, banking, medicine, and writing. Included are the records of George and Mary’s grandson, G. Paul Clements, who married Katherine Elizabeth Kennedy, thus bringing a business link to O’Bryan Brothers, Inc. The marriage of G. Paul and Katherine produced George Paul Clements, Jr., who grew up in Nashville and became a researcher and writer of the city’s history. The business records include information regarding O’Bryan Brothers, Inc., a Nashville- based distributor of men’s work and casual clothes.

The materials in this collection include correspondence, photographs, wills, newspaper clippings, bank and medical records, school, military and business records, and architectural plans. Oversize materials include family photographs, printed materials, and drawings. The content of the materials includes personal papers, vital, medical, and military records, and genealogy for the Clements and Kennedy families. Additionally, the personal papers, vital records, photographs, school records, personal records, professional records, and research, writing, and teaching papers belonging to George Paul Clements, Jr. are included as well.
