Reinterpreting the Global, Rearticulating the Local: Nueva Música Colombiana, Networks, Circulation, and Affect Simón Calle Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Simón Calle All rights reserved ABSTRACT Reinterpreting the Global, Rearticulating the Local: Nueva Música Colombiana, Networks, Circulation, and Affect Simón Calle This dissertation analyses identity formation through music among contemporary Colombian musicians. The work focuses on the emergence of musical fusions in Bogotá, which participant musicians and Colombian media have called “nueva música Colombiana” (new Colombian music). The term describes the work of bands that assimilate and transform North-American music genres such as jazz, rock, and hip-hop, and blend them with music historically associated with Afro-Colombian communities such as cumbia and currulao, to produce several popular and experimental musical styles. In the last decade, these new fusions have begun circulating outside Bogotá, becoming the distinctive sound of young Colombia domestically and internationally. The dissertation focuses on questions of musical circulation, affect, and taste as a means for articulating difference, working on the self, and generating attachments others and therefore social bonds and communities This dissertation considers musical fusion from an ontological perspective influenced by actor-network, non-representational, and assemblage theory. Such theories consider a fluid social world, which emerges from the web of associations between heterogeneous human and material entities. The dissertation traces the actions, interactions, and mediations between places, people, institutions, and recordings that enable the emergence of new Colombian music. In considering those associations, it places close attention to the affective relationships between people and music. -
Recorded at Discos Fuentes, Medellín, Colombia
1 hese days, when being wary of technology makes you look as though you are slightly stuck in the past, music producers Mario Galeano (Frente Cumbiero, Colombia) Tand William Holland (Quantic, UK), decided to return to old techniques in search of the spirit, texture and sound of a time when music perhaps sounded better. With full conviction, these two producers, who are like graduates in a school of researchers who look for what lies hidden in the grooves of old vinyl LPs, give us Ondatrópica, a master-class of craftsmanship shaped into sound. As a music lover and member of Colombian Public Radio, I consider myself privileged to have witnessed the intense and joyous recording sessions of Ondatrópica in the Discos Fuentes studios during January 2012. Few things in life are as priceless as seeing with your own eyes—and hearing with your own ears—Pedro ‘Ramayá’ Beltran conjuring up modernity in a rap; colourful Michi Sarmiento behind his sax and singing like he did back in the sixties with the Combo Bravo; Markitos Micolta serenading us on why he wants to live to be a hundred years old; or accordionist Aníbal ‘Sensación’ Velásquez paying the respect he deserves to the great Andrés Landero. And there was nothing more satisfying than to see everyone show how our musical heritage is a vehicle for a cross-over of generations, sound traditions, and infl uences. I know that listeners worldwide will gladly embrace this piece of Colombia materialized on an LP, and also this timeless gathering of our nation’s musical talent: Guepajé! Jaime Andrés Monsalve Musical Director, Radio Nacional de Colombia 2 3 AN INTRODUCTION BY WILL HOLLAND & MARIO GALEANO: fter several years of working in and around Colombian tropical music, we were given the opportunity to create a large-scale project involving an iconic selection of Colombian musicians in a classic and mythical studio Asetting, using completely analogue recording equipment and benefi ting from an inter-generational meeting between the new and the old guard. -

Afrobeat, Fela and Beyond: Scenes, Style and Ideology
AFROBEAT, FELA AND BEYOND: SCENES, STYLE AND IDEOLOGY by Oyebade Ajibola Dosunmu BA, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, 2001 MA, University of Pittsburgh, 2005 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2010 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES This dissertation was presented by Oyebade Ajibola Dosunmu It was defended on November 12, 2010 and approved by Jean-Jacques Sene, PhD, Department of History, Chatham University Laurence Glasco, PhD, Department of History Mary Lewis, PhD, Department of Music (Emerita) Nathan Davis, PhD, Department of Music Akin Euba, PhD, Department of Music ii Copyright © by Oyebade Dosunmu 2010 iii AFROBEAT, BEYOND FELA: SCENES, STYLE AND IDEOLOGY Oyebade Ajibola Dosunmu, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2010 Afrobeat first emerged in the late 1960s amid the rapidly changing postcolonial terrain of Lagos, Nigeria. Created by Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (1938-1997), the genre blends scathing anti-establishment lyrics with Yoruba traditional music and Western forms, particularly jazz. Fela’s ideological dictum: “Music is the Weapon of the Future,” encapsulates his view of music as an oppositional tool, his enactment of which led to frequent violent confrontations with the Nigerian state. Throughout his lifetime, Fela held hegemonic sway over afrobeat’s stylistic and ideological trajectories. However, following his death, the genre has witnessed a global upsurge with protégés emerging in New York City, San Francisco, Paris, London and other cultural capitals of the world. In my dissertation, I chronicle afrobeat’s transnational networks and discuss processes of stylistic and ideological affiliation through which such networks have emerged. -
Spanky Wilson & the Quantic Soul
The name Spanky Wilson, is the one she has used since being a young kid. For acting up she would receive a spanking (possibly on a daily basis!) and her father gave her the mischievous name which stuck, in fact she SPANKY WILSON & THE QUANTIC SOUL ORCHESTRA - I’M THANKFUL apparently prefers it over her real name. STREET DATE: 10/10/2006 Critical praise for Quantic’s 2004 album “Mishaps Since she burst onto the scene in the late 1960s, Spanky Wilson has Happening” released by Ubiquity in US/Canada: performed and recorded with the likes of Marvin Gaye, Sammy Davis Jr., “The hottest motherf*%ker out there” Lalo Schifrin, Jimmy Smith, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Pretty Purdie XLR8R and Willie Bobo. Renowned as a soul, blues and jazz singer on both sides of “Mashes fiery horns, tasty guitar riffs and cookin’ the Atlantic, she has consistently released quality music for the past four percussion” VIBE decades, collaborating with some of the most talented and respected producers of the day. She has released seven albums under her own name, “Most musicians can only dream about creating mishaps like this” and tracks like "Sunshine of Your Love" and "You" have become DJ and YBR collector favorites worldwide. For Fans of: Breakestra, Sharon Jones, Aretha Franklin, Alice Russell I’m Thankful sees her team up with Will Holland of The Quantic Soul Orchestra to produce a stunning File Under: Funk, Soul, Dance (and alongside collection of 21st Century jazz, funk, big band and soul music. Will "Quantic" Holland and Wilson first Quantic or Quantic Soul Orchestra releases!) collaborated in 2004 on two tracks for the third Quantic album, Mishaps Happening. -

Colombia will be the main character in this 16th edition of La Mar de Músicas, organized by the Culture Department of Cartagena Town Hall and which will be held between 9 th and 24 th July. Music, Art, Cinema and Literature will revolve around this latinamerican country, but during the festival many other stars will shine, as Salif Keita, Melody Gardot, Kronos Quartet & Alim Qasimov Ensemble, Toumani Diabaté, Youssou N`Dour, Patti Smith, Diego El Cigala, Gotan Project, Macaco, Aterciopelados, Marta Wainwright, Toto La Momposina ... and the project Afro-Cubism, whose worldwide premiere in Cartagena will start the festival, as it will be the opening night on 9 th July. Afro-Cubism is the work that finally joins music from Cuba and Mali, after the frustrated attempt to merge musicians from both countries by Nick Gold in 1996 and which had the legendary Buena Vista Social Club as a result. Gold has eventually carried out his original idea and, after many of those fantastic Cuban musicians passed away, he has merged Eliades Ochoa, Toumani Diabaté, Basekou Kouyaté and Kasse Mady among others in a record which is going to be marketed this summer. All of them will open La Mar de Músicas in Cartagena. The sixteenth edition of the festival will mainly show the musics of Colombia and a great part of the sounds from the latinamerican country will be played. -
