TURN BACK THE CLOCK - by Roger Langley (converted from publication pdf and so not original layout) Unfortunately turning back the clock will not restore the once famous Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer clock tower which fronted the company’s Borehamwood studio complex. A quarter of a century ago, the tower was finally levelled, several years after the studio doors were closed for business. MGM ceased operations in 1970/1 and demolition of the site took place in 1973, to make way for industrial use and the acres of backlot were cleared for residential housing development. Some of the emerging new roads were given names to reflect the former cinematic history, including a few surnames of screen stars. Despite local campaigns, as the iconic roadside building and tower did not have “listed” status, demolition could not be prevented. Forty years on, there is virtually nothing remaining to be seen, except for a low brick wall on Elstree Way, which previously bordered the MGM administration building. Pulling down the large sound stages can be seen online (at weblinks below) and at the end of the British comedy movie “Holiday on the Buses” (1973), with actual footage of the demolition having been captured by the film’s production unit. The last photo shows the “Prisoner” dressing rooms and the view from the other end during demolition (the small Moke is superimposed and other photos have been colourised, except for the low wall one from Google street view). This meant that, unlike the television series which were filmed in London, the filming locations would be found in close proximity to the studios on the streets of Borehamwood and the nearby village of Shenley, which is just a couple of miles to the north-east. However, each of the three films did have at least one scene shot away from the Borehamwood area, as will be revealed later. In 1971 came first On the Buses film, which was to use a number of filming locations in Borehamwood and less so in nearby Shenley. The scene where Stan is forced to undergo a test after an accident and has to drive the bus on a skidpan was filmed at London Transport’s facility in Chiswick, West London, which unfortunately closed in 1983 and the site has since been redeveloped. Mutiny on the Buses was also filmed largely in Borehamwood, incorporating locations used in the first film as well as new sites. Shenley was once more chosen as an ideal filming location for certain scenes owing to the quiet, secluded nature of the area.

We have resisted the temptations of hindsight to change, or comment on, the text other than to correct spelling errors. The document therefore represents the period in which it was created, as well as the hard work of former colleagues of the BFI. North Wales Movie Map The North Wales Film & Television Trail began with a series of plaques to celebrate film and television locations across North Wales. The first of these celebrated the film Inn of the Sixth Happiness. Filmed in 1958 in Beddgelert in the heart of the beautiful Snowdonia National Park and directed by Mark Robson, it starred Ingrid Bergman, Curt Jürgens, Robert Donat and Burt Kwouk. It was Burt Kwouk who unveiled the plaque on 28 May 2004 and this can now be seen outside the Woodcraft shop on the main street in Beddgelert. You may know Burt from his roles in the "Pink Panther" films and for his TV role as Entwhistle in "Last of the Summer Wine". A total of 13 plaques are now in place with another twenty or so planned for the future. Details of the plaques are given on the next page. Starring: Kenneth Williams, Sid James, Joan Sims, Angela Douglas 08 The Forsyte Saga (2002) Plaque location: The 2002 TV remake of this classic series of the 1960s Grand Hotel, Llandudno used the Victorian splendour of Llandudno as a location. The series follows the lives and loves of the Forsyte family during the reign of Queen Victoria.
