Remarking on the successful removal of each of the tiny specimens by a confounded ophthalmologist, much of the media coverage failed to mention the worldwide presence of these insects attracted to perspiration and other saline bodily fluids, as well as their study by scientists who use their own eyes to attract and feed their apian subjects. One example is Hans Bänzinger, a Swiss entomologist who has researched bee and moth lachryphagy in forest regions across southern Asia since the mid-1960s. In 2009, Bänzinger allowed more than 250 bees to consume tears from his eyes at several sites throughout Thailand, later conducting a similar study between 2013 and 2014.2 Bees imbibed his tears during day-long stretches held over several weeks, most often staying for minutes at a time and proving barely noticeable or producing minimal discomfort. Only on a few occasions were the foraging bees too “pestiferous” to bear for more than a couple of hours.3 Bänzinger’s investigations and their accompanying photo- > (1) graphic records constitute a form of self- experimentation: single-subject research where a person carries out processes within and through their body to gather information on a specific phenomenon, assess a prototype, or otherwise test a hypothesis, remedy, or procedure. Hans Bänzinger’s examination of sweat bees falls into a robust lineage of self- experimenters in entomology. A Chinese man eats a dead baby on TV and actually claims it’s art! The announcement alone unleashed one of Great Britain’s hottest debates on the freedom of the media, the press, and art: the British tv Channel wanted to broad- cast the documentary Beijing Swings, which includes photographs of Chinese artist Zhu Yu apparently eating a dead baby. According to Zhu, the corpse is from a miscarriage. In one of the photographs, he’s washing the body in a sink. Another photo shows him biting into a dismembered body part. Zhu has said that the pictures were taken during a perfor- mance titled »Eating Humans« in his house in Beijing. Yesterday, Zhu Yu claimed that as an artist, it’s his job to initiate debates over morality and art. His work involves exploring whether boundaries still exist. It does not, however, seem to bother anyone when this »artist« transgress- es these boundaries. Not even the guardians of the law — because de- spite the fact that artists using human body parts for their art can be sentenced to ten years in prison, nothing happened [...].     The Sacrificial Aesthetic: Blood Rituals from Art to Murder Dawn Perlmutter Department of Fine Arts Cheyney University of Pennsylvania Cheyney PA 19319-0200 [email protected] [Ed. note 2/2017: Many of the links in this article have become invalid and been removed] The concept of the “sacrificial esthetic” introduced in Eric Gans’s Chronicle No. 184 entitled “Sacrificing Culture” describes a situation in which aesthetic forms remain sacrificial but have evolved from a necessary feature of social organization to a psychological element of the human condition. Gans concludes that art’s sacrificial esthetic is essentially exhausted as a creative force and argues that the future lies with simulations, virtual realities in which the spectator plays a partially interactive role. His most significant claim is that “This end of the ability of the esthetic to discriminate between the sacrificial and the antisacrificial is not the end of art. On the contrary, it liberates the esthetic from the ethical end of justifying sacrifice.” The consequence of the liberation of the ethical justification of sacrifice is the main concern of this essay. Throughout the history of art we have encountered images of blood, from the representations of wounded animals in the cave paintings of Lascaux through century after century of brutal Biblical images, through history paintings depicting scenes of war, up through the many films of war, horror, and violence. Blood is now off the canvas, off the screen and sometimes literally in your face. It is no coincidence that this substance has intrigued artists throughout history. Blood is fascinating; it simultaneously represents purity and impurity, the sacred and the profane, life and death.

This work used the lens of S/M practice to deal with issues of illness, death, gender and sex. Throughout most of their 15 year collaboration (late 1980- early 1996) Flanagan and Rose lived and worked in relative obscurity, their work being circulated mainly in small subcultural circles. It was during the years of controversies surrounding the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), roughly 1989 to 1997, that Flanagan and Rose experienced unforeseen professional success and fame, propelling them from underground distribution in L.A. to the international art scene. These controversies arose from objections by various rightwing Christian politicians, individuals and groups who felt that the NEA had misused American tax dollars by awarding grants to artists who created and agencies that displayed "obscene" art. Flanagan and Rose were two such artists. This is a case study of the situation of Flanagan and Rose within these controversies, a situation in which there was opportunity, experimentation and heightened awareness despite (or perhaps because of) heated conflicts between opposing sets of ethics, aesthetics and lifestyle.

Much of the background is covered in an increasingly voluminous literature on Chinese contemporary art in the 1980s and 1990s, which is often articulated around the caesura of the ‘Beijing Incident’ in June 1989, preceded as it was by the China/Avant-Garde exhibition in February 1989.1 In a sense, the art world opened up and established its autonomy during 1985–89, but was then held back sharply in the two years after the ‘Incident’.2 It reopened irreversibly, it appears, after the visits of Deng Xiaoping to Shenzhen in 1992, and his associated speeches.3 95 ZHANG PEILI: FROM PAINTING TO VIDEO The residues of 1989 are many. Principally there was and is an official antipathy for disturbing events or artworks that are socially unexpected, uncontrolled or deliberately shocking. Of course, current taste defines ‘shock’, but the state applies a shifting criterion of public acceptability, some of whose parameters it changes disingenuously or without notice. Radical art or experimental practice outside the academy no longer has any direct connection with formalist avant- gardism, but certainly during the 1990s a socially disturbing quality was attributed to performance art and, to a lesser degree, to installation art.

    Sculpture 381 Fall 2013 T/Th 1-4 Repeat, Perform, Record Billy Culiver E.A.T. 9 Evening in Art and Technology A Class Exploring the Intersection Between Theater, Dance and Visual Art The studio art course, Repeat, Perform, Record we will consider the dynamic of live bodies in physical spaces and read critical text and philosophical ideas about performance art. You will have 3 assignment: 1. Work Ethic-Duration/Record, 2. Work Ethic Labor and a collaborative work done with dancers, 3. Spaces Created by Action/Action Created by Spaces. Each assignment is directly aligned to a set of readings and visiting artists who will join the class. In this class, I attempt to honor the radical roots of Performance Art, with its history of expanding notions of how we make art, how we witness art, and what we understand the function of art to be. Performance art in the studio art context emerged from the visual and plastic arts rather than the traditional categories of dance and theater. From the beginning “Performance” was part of the modernist movements such as Futurism, Dada. With the emergence of Fluxus, Situationalism, Happenings, and Conceptualist practices the correspondence with the conscious use of space, time and process became central to Performance Art. With in the last decade, the concept of space, time and process have blended to expand Performance Art, making it a contemporary tool for expression with diverse directions of visual art, theater, dance, music and social practices. Contemporary live art now employs many different forms of experimentation diminishing the known or rehearsed dynamics of performance by opening it to improvisation and chance operations.
