PROLOGUE - DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE IN WHICH THREE SISTERS LEAVE THEIR WORLD BEHIND

SONGS: THE GLOW & WHEN YOU’RE FALLING

[LIGHTS UP. SHOWCASE: VOICE lines the sides of the stage. Music begins and they sing:]

THE GLOW LOOK AROUND TAKE IN ALL THAT YOU SEE YOU JUST MIGHT BE SURPRISED A WORLD OF ENCHANTMENT AND PURE MAJESTY YOU'LL BE DISCOVERING THE HERO THAT YOU'RE MEANT TO BE

[Curtain opens. LORINA, ALICE and EDITH are having a picnic. ALICE and EDITH lay on a small hillside looking to the sky and pointing to clouds. LORINA remains on the picnic blanket, trying to be irritated with her sisters, yet it is also clear she loves them dearly.]

THE STORY BEGINS WITH THE LIGHT IN YOUR HEART A FANTASY, A DREAM AND A SPARK ONCE YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE READY TO SHINE THE WONDER INSIDE YOU WILL SHOW YOU ARE THE GLOW...

FEEL YOUR STRENGTH, YOU CAN FACE THE WORLD BELIEVE EVERY DAY, EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE A MAGICAL JOURNEY AWAITS...

EDITH I see... a duck... a white duck... And a !

LORINA They’re clouds, Edith. Of course they’re white. Come finish your plate.

ALICE I see a mad — and she wants to cut off your head!

EDITH No!

LORINA Edith, Alice is only teasing. Alice, if you’re going to play, play nice. ALICE in WONDERLAND 2.

ALICE It’s so dull here. I want to be on the river. (new thought) I wish it were summer and time for the fair!

LORINA Unless you were on the river or at the fair and then you’d wish to be somewhere else. I don’t know why I even try to explain to you how—

ALICE Neither do I. You’re not mother.

EDITH (peace-keeper) Play with us, Lorina!

LORINA (mostly to herself) Then who would serve the food or clean up everything after. It’s supposed to be a merry day for me too.

[Enter WHITE RABBIT, unseen, stage left while LORINA speaks. She franticly pulls out pocket watch and pulls her ear, dreadfully worried.]

RABBIT Dear me, I’m late - so terribly, terribly late.

ALICE (dumbfounded) I see rabbit... white rabbit.

EDITH (pointing up) I already spotted a rabbit.

ALICE Not this one.

EDITH (still searching clouds) Where are you looking?

[ALICE turns EDITH’s head. EDITH gasps at the sight of the WHITE RABBIT.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 3.

LORINA (fishing in picnic basket) Nowhere. Alice, your games are really tiresome.

RABBIT (to self) What will ?

LORINA You’ll finish your lunch, like a good girl.

[ALICE looks oddly at LORINA, who just answered the WHITE RABBIT as if it were ALICE who had spoken.]

RABBIT Where’s that entrance got to now?

LORINA What entrance?

EDITH He’s awful peculiar in vest and pants.

LORINA Now you’ve got Edith doing it— (she has looked up, jumps) There’s a rabbit.

ALICE I told you. Let’s catch it!

LORINA Alice, no!!

[ALICE bounds toward the WHITE RABBIT. EDITH is on her heels. The WHITE RABBIT, spotting the girls, panics.

Play 1st minute of CARMEN Suite No. 1.

Rabbit races about the stage with ALICE and EDITH trying to corner her while LORINA tries to grab her sisters. ALICE in WONDERLAND 4.

ALICE is on the rabbit’s heels as it races toward a tree. It has made several attempts at the tree, but one of the girls was always in the way. Now, with a clear path, the WHITE RABBIT leaps through, sliding down the opening.

ALICE leaps in too, shrieks and tries to stop from falling. LORINA grabs her hands (ALICE has managed to turn herself around), but is pulled in to her waist. LORINA’s legs leave the ground. EDITH grabs her heels and pulls, but all three are pulled in.

Moving shoulder to shoulder, SHOWCASE: VOICE moves to Center Stage. They sing:

THE STORY BEGINS WITH THE LIGHT IN YOUR HEART A FANTASY, A DREAM AND A SPARK ONCE YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE READY TO SHINE THE WONDER INSIDE YOU WILL SHOW YOU ARE THE GLOW, YOU ARE THE GLOW WHOA, YOU ARE THE GLOW.

WHEN YOU’RE FALLING

[As music shifts to upbeat rhythms, screen descends and ENSEMBLE CAST enters from Stage Right and Stage Left. They dance behind SHOWCASE: VOICE, wave banners, animals march past, move streamers and sing the chorus.

As SHOWCASE: VOICE sings, we see LORINA, ALICE and EDITH on the screen falling slowly down a seemingly endless hole.]

EVERY DAY, YOU CRAWL INTO THE NIGHT A FALLEN ANGEL, WITH YOUR WINGS SET ALIGHT WHEN YOU HIT THE GROUND, EVERYTHING TURNS TO BLUE I CAN'T GET THROUGH THE SMOKE, THAT'S SURROUNDING YOU

'CAUSE WHEN YOU'RE FALLING I CAN'T TELL WHICH WAY IS DOWN AND WHEN YOU'RE SCREAMING SOMEHOW I DON'T HEAR A SOUND AND WHEN YOU'RE SEEING THINGS ALICE in WONDERLAND 5.

THEN YOUR FEET DON’T TOUCH THE GROUND 'CAUSE WHEN YOU'RE FALLING I CAN'T TELL WHICH WAY IS DOWN

I CAN SEE THROUGH THE CLOUDS, I CAN WALK RIGHT THROUGH THE WALLS HANG ME OFF THE CEILING, BUT I CAN'T TAKE THE FALL SHOULD I CROSS THE RIVER, WHEN I MAY GET SWEPT AWAY OUT THERE ON THE WATER, YOU CAN STILL SEE ME WAVE

'CAUSE WHEN YOU'RE FALLING I CAN'T TELL WHICH WAY IS DOWN AND WHEN YOU'RE SCREAMING SOMEHOW I DON'T HEAR A SOUND AND WHEN YOU'RE SEEING THINGS THEN YOUR FEET DON’T TOUCH THE GROUND 'CAUSE WHEN YOU'RE FALLING I CAN'T TELL WHICH WAY IS DOWN

AND WHEN YOU'RE FALLING I CAN'T TELL WHICH WAY IS DOWN AND WHEN YOU'RE SCREAMING SOMEHOW I DON'T HEAR A SOUND

SCENE 1 - STRANGE SIGNS AND STRANGER PEOPLE IN WHICH JACKIE DIAMOND ALERTS THE QUEEN OF FALLING COLORS

[The ANIMALS of the BIRD CAUCUS are Stage Right including the extension. CATERPILLAR, TWEEDLE DEE and TWEEDLE DUM are up Stage Right on platforms by mushroom (only upper portion of CATERPILLAR can be seen at present time). MAD HATTER and tea party (, DORMOUSE and MAY HAM) are at tea table down Stage left. DUCHESS soothes her child, KELE, up Stage left on platform as her CHEF cooks with vast amounts of pepper and the CHESIRE CAT slinks about.

QUEEN of sits beside the of HEARTS, though his chair does not reach the height of hers.

Below, JACKIE SPADE, JACKIE HEART, and JACKIE CLUB and WHITE chat idly. ALICE in WONDERLAND 6.

JACKIE DIAMOND enters from Stage Left at a run, not straight, but weaving through other scenes.

She knocks into the CHEF, causing pepper to spill on KELE who wails and throws a fit. The DUCHESS yells after JACKIE DIAMOND. JACKIE DIAMOND spins TWEEDLE DEE and TWEEDLE DUM; bowls over some of the ANIMALS, races alongside Stage Right audience, along middle aisle, along Stage Left audience, bursts past the tea party, causing the MAD HATTER to spill tea (he cries out and begins to lick it off table). DORMOUSE wakes, emerging from sugar bowl, asking what is happening. MARCH HARE shoves lid down.

Finally, he reaches the QUEEN of HEARTS at the center, bowling into the other JACKIES.

SPADE Good heavens, what is it?

CLUB I’ll knock your down to coal!

WHITE KNIGHT Allow me to aid you in this fight, Jackie Club!

DIAMOND No fight!

QUEEN OF HEARTS Jackie-love! What’s going on down there?

HEART It’s Jackie Diamond, Mumsy! She’s entered all a fluster!

QUEEN OF HEARTS Thank you, sweet-pea. (suddenly and violently) Off with her head!

KING OF HEARTS Now, now, dear. Let’s hear what the Royal Astrologer has to say first... ALICE in WONDERLAND 7.

QUEEN OF HEARTS Then off with her head.

KING OF HEARTS Diamond, I’m surprised anything could pull you out of your observatory.

DIAMOND (out of breath, and now worried for her head) Three stars... fallen... blue... pink... and green.

SPADE You’re not making sense.

CLUB Hear that? You’re not making any cents!

HEART You’re not profitable.

CLUB Yes! Profit size more clearly!

DIAMOND I have seen three colors fall through our sky: blue, pink and green.

HEART What do you suppose it means, Jackie Diamond?

DIAMOND Doom!

KING OF HEARTS This is most strange!

DIAMOND Indeed!

KING OF HEARTS (not paying attention to Diamond) I seem to have been sitting on a newt! (he picks up small newt and flicks it away, to Jackie Diamond) What were you saying, Diamond? ALICE in WONDERLAND 8.

DIAMOND (pause) Doom!

WHITE KNIGHT ‘Tis the work of the Red Knight - the villain!

CLUB Oh, keep still about your Red Knight, will you?

WHITE KNIGHT But he is out there - creating havoc.

[Enter RED KNIGHT, riding. He stops at KELE, who is still crying (silent to audience). He hands her a large lollipop. She is instantly happy. The DUCHESS is thankful. The RED KNIGHT proceeds. The CHEF marches to the lollipop and sprinkles pepper on it, making KELE cry (silently) again.]

WHITE KNIGHT (CONT’D) A more dastardly foe has never existed.

[RED KNIGHT bows to CATERPILLAR as TWEEDLE DEE and TWEEDLE DUM look like admiring damsels in his presence. He spots ANIMALS and dismounts.]

RED KNIGHT Ho, there, friends!

[He jogs over.]

WHITE KNIGHT Each word out of his mouth is like pitch and fire.

RED KNIGHT Good ‘morrow to you all! Might I be of assistance in this time of need?

[He immediately helps up the animals that are still on ground nursing wounds. As he is helping last animal, GULLY, he spots the sad MAD HATTER. He races over, unfortunately dropping GULLY back to ground. MAD HATTER points to spilled cup. RED KNIGHT races to his horse, grabs a tea kettle and races back.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 9.

WHITE KNIGHT He will cast down the innocent. He searches for mischief and woe to he who has something of value...

CLUB (finishing speech) It shall surely be taken by the Red Knight. We know! We know!

[RED KNIGHT presents tea pot. MAD HATTER and MARCH HARE celebrate silently. DORMOUSE emerges from sugar bowl with a smile. MARCH HARE shoves him down again.]

QUEEN OF HEARTS Rabbit! Fetch the . Let her interpret these strange signs.

[Enter MOCK TURTLE, slowly, carrying old books and looking through old parchment papers. A brick wall slides along behind her, showing she is not where the QUEEN is.]

MOCK TURTLE Most interesting. In the time of Wabe Fore, all Mimsy were Borogroves. I must determine more.

QUEEN OF HEARTS Rabbit? Rabbit!

[Enter WHITE RABBIT, racing in opposite direction of MOCK TURTLE. She grabs hold of MOCK TURTLE.]

RABBIT Mock Turtle! Have you seen the Queen?

MOCK TURTLE (nodding) On several occasions.

RABBIT Have you seen her as of late?

MOCK TURTLE No. She’s usually quite prompt. By the looks of things, you are the one who is late. ALICE in WONDERLAND 10.

RABBIT I am. Terribly. Do you think the Queen will be mad?

MOCK TURTLE No. I fear the Hatter will be mad... all his days.

MAD HATTER (from table) I call for a toast to the Queen!

MAY HAM (holding up toast) To the queen!

MARCH HARE (holding up envelope) To the queen!

[MARCH HARE places toast in envelope.]

MARCH HARE (CONT’D) I’ll leave it for the postman.

DORMOUSE (emerging) He always comes after.

MARCH HARE Quiet, you!

[Shuts sugar bowl again.]

MOCK TURTLE (to White Rabbit) Poor, poor Hatter.

[CHESIRE CAT 1 slinks up. CHESIRE CAT 2 is hiding behind wall.]

CHESIRE CAT 1 Something the matter?

MOCK TURTLE Oh, hello, Chesire. No. ‘Hatter’ I said. Not ‘Matter’.

RABBIT There is something the matter. I’m late for seeing the Queen. ALICE in WONDERLAND 11.

CHESIRE CAT 1 (thinks) Were you meant to see the Caterpillar?

RABBIT (confused) No... Not today.

CHESIRE CAT 1 (walking behind thrones) Well, then you’re early for that.

CHESIRE CAT 2 (emerging from behind wall, behind Rabbit) One must look on the bright side of things.

MOCK TURTLE I agree. Awful difficult to read when you look on the dark.

RABBIT I must go. I must go!

MOCK TURTLE Ah! Potty’s down the hall and to the left.

RABBIT Not that kind of ‘go’!

[Exit WHITE RABBIT.]

CHESIRE CAT 2 I must go.

MOCK TURTLE Down the hall and to the left.

CHESIRE CAT 2 Thank you.

[Exit CHESIRE CAT.]

QUEEN OF HEARTS Where is that rabbit?

HEART She had left to visit her siblings, Mumsy. Remember? ALICE in WONDERLAND 12.

QUEEN OF HEARTS (sweetly) I remember, dear. I provided her exactly 38 minutes vacation. (yelling) Why isn’t she back?!

SPADE Her siblings do number one hundred and three.

[QUEEN of HEARTS glares down at SPADE, who cringes.]

SPADE (CONT’D) Leaving plenty of time for the visit and travel. (looking about with feigned anger) Where is she?

HEART Perhaps she’s running late.

QUEEN OF HEARTS I’ll have her head!

KING OF HEARTS I hear the foot is far more lucky.

QUEEN OF HEARTS Jackie, you fetch the Mock Turtle!

CLUB Which one?

QUEEN OF HEARTS GO!

[JACKIES CLUB, DIAMOND and SPADE scramble away as we hear a large *Splash!* and two thuds, loud to the ear, but soft in quality of impact.

Thrones move back and turn to reveal grassy side. Actors enter with palm trees and a sun. One actor is a boulder. Others wave blue fabric off the edge of stage to simulate waves.

Tea Party, Duchess House, Queen of Hearts’ Court and Mushroom performers may exit stage if not working set in Scene 2.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 13.

SCENE 2 - SPELLING TROUBLE IN WHICH WONDERLAND’S ANIMALS FIND EDITH

SONGS: PUMPIN’ BLOOD

[DODO & MOUSE, DUCK & PARROT, MUSKRAT, GUINEA, PIGGY, GECKO, FLAMINGO, FROG, TOAD, ROOSTER, STORK and FAWN scurry to the water’s edge, Center Stage, followed by GULLY and SQUAWK.]

MUSKRAT What was that splash?

DODO & MOUSE There’s something in the water!

FROG, TOAD & ROOSTER There’s always something in the water.

FLAMINGO There’s rocks and weeds...

GULLY & SQUAWK And yummy yummy fishies!

GUINEA & PIGGY No, no. There’s a girl!

FAWN A girl? What kind of girl?

GECKO DODO & MOUSE A pink girl in a young young dress.

MUSKRAT That doesn’t sound right.

DUCK & PARROT This girl spells trouble.

GULLY & SQUAWK She does? She must be very smart.

STORK It’s not so hard to spell. T.... R.... B.... hmmmm.... ALICE in WONDERLAND 14.

FLAMINGO Where’s she gone?

[They all search the water, befuddled. Enter EDITH. She is wet, but not dripping. The damp dress has been kept warm. Her hair has been wet with warm water as well.

She sees the ANIMALS all searching the surface of the water.]

EDITH Are you looking for something?

GUINEA & PIGGY A girl. She was in the water.

FAWN A pink girl in a young young dress.

GECKO FLAMINGO (looking at Edith) Why, you’re all wet. Were you in the water?

[EDITH nods. The animals look to the water, then to EDITH, then the water, then EDITH, then the water, then EDITH, pondering the situation.]

STORK Did you see a girl in there?

EDITH Besides me?

FROG, TOAD & ROOSTER Beside you, in front of you...

GECKO ROOSTER Anywhere!

EDITH No.

FAWN She must be gone then. ALICE in WONDERLAND 15.

FLAMINGO (moving off) Poor child. at sea.

GECKO GUINEA & PIGGY It’s a lake.

FLAMINGO Lost at lake.

DUCK & PARROT Wait! (to Edith) Spell ‘trouble’.

EDITH T-r-o... b...e...l.

FROG, TOAD & ROOSTER Not her.

MUSKRAT I could have told you that. She’s a young girl in a pink, pink dress.

STORK Entirely different species.

[They all start to leave again.]

EDITH Excuse me. (holding her dress wide) I might catch a cold.

STORK Why would you want to do that?

GECKO FAWN If you catch a cold, you’ll have a cold...

DODO & MOUSE You’re a strange girl to want a cold.

GUINEA & PIGGY She doesn’t know what’s good for her. ALICE in WONDERLAND 16.

FLAMINGO Let us help her. She needs to be dry.

MUSKRAT Sit down.

[MUSKRAT shuffles off and then returns with a large book (carried by two additional actors)]

MUSKRAT (CONT’D) (announcing) This is the driest thing I know. (reads) It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, It was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair...

FLAMINGO (while Muskrat reads, to Edith) How is she getting on?

FAWN Wet as ever.

DODO & MOUSE We move that we move to adopt more active remedies.

GECKO Speak English!

DODO & MOUSE We are suggesting a Caucus race!

GULLY & SQUAWK Ooo! A caucus Race!

GUINEA & PIGGY We love a good Caucus Race.

GULLY, SQUAWK, GUINEA & PIGGY (beat) What’s a Caucus Race?

FROG, TOAD & ROOSTER The best way to explain it, is to do it! ALICE in WONDERLAND 17.

STORK One-two-three-GO!

[All the ANIMALS move into a giant circle. Enter PLATINUM PLAYERS and CENTER STAGE along sides. DODO and MOUSE grab Edith and pull her along. Even the TREES and SUN join the dance.

During lyrics, they move in slow motion, during chorus they make patterns, during whistling, they return to circle. PLATINUM PLAYERS sing verses.]

PUMPIN’ BLOOD

HEY HEART, ON THE RUN AGAIN, DRIVING STRONG, FORWARD SEE THE STARS, WON'T TAKE HIS COURSE GOT THE BAND IN THE FRONT SEAT IT'S THE BEST OF WORLD'S FEELING LIKE NOTHING CAN GO WRONG HEAR THE SIRENS, THE WORLD, YOU CATCHING ON

[Song ends with all ANIMALS and EDITH breathing heavy. Exit PLATINUM PLAYERS and CENTER STAGE.]

DODO & MOUSE The race is over!

EDITH But who has won? ALICE in WONDERLAND 18.

FAWN Everyone has won!

FLAMINGO Prizes!

STORK Yes, everyone must have a prize.

GECKO FAWN Who should give them?

MUSKRAT (pointing to Edith) Her, of course!

[The ANIMALS hold out wings and paws for their prize.]

EDITH I have some sugared raisins.

[DUCK and PARROT begin handing out raisins.]

DUCK & PARROT Just enough! One for each.

GULLY & SQUAWK (motioning to Edith) What about... what about...

EDITH (providing her name) Edith.

[GULLY and SQUAWK think she said “Eat it.” They look at their raisins then gobble them.]

GULLY & SQUAWK (to Edith again) And what’s your name?

EDITH Edith. ALICE in WONDERLAND 19.

GULLY & SQUAWK (making motion of eating, then look around) Someone ate our raisins.

GECKO MUSKRAT Edith. Her name is Eee-dithh.

GULLY & SQUAWK Well then, Eeee-dithhh, you don’t have a prize.

DODO & MOUSE Quite right! She needs a prize.

FAWN Have anything left in that pocket?

EDITH Just a thimble.

FROG, TOAD & ROOSTER Hand it over. (takes it and holds it high) Eee-dithh of the House of... (looks to Edith)

EDITH ...Brick?

FROG, TOAD & ROOSTER Of the House of Brick, we present this noble prize to you.

[They hand it to EDITH, but it falls to the ground. The ANIMALS scurry to get it, but each kicks it away.]

DODO & MOUSE (finding it then reaching) It’s under this rock. We... can’t... get it...

EDITH And that was Lorina’s thimble! Oh, I wish Dinah was here. She could get it.

STORK And who is Dinah?

EDITH My cat. ALICE in WONDERLAND 20.

DODO & MOUSE (backing away with others) Cat?!

DUCK & PARROT Cat!

GUINEA & PIGGY We’ve got to go.

FLAMINGO Important things to do!

EDITH Please don’t leave. I need to find my sisters!

GECKO FLAMINGO So sorry! Time... to rest.

FAWN Yes! Rest! It’s very late.

EDITH It’s not even dark.

DUCK & PARROT Of course it is. (to sun) Shoo-shoo!

MUSKRAT Wait, friends. The cat is not here. (to Edith) Is she?

[EDITH shakes head.]

MUSKRAT (CONT’D) And Eeee-dithhh needs to find her sisters.

STORK Yes. Who better than us to aid her?

DODO & MOUSE The queen?

STORK Exactly. Much better than us. ALICE in WONDERLAND 21.

FLAMINGO Let’s bring her to the Queen.

GUINEA & PIGGY Oh, you’ll like the queen.

EDITH (excited) Will I?

GUINEA & PIGGY Probably not.

GULLY & SQUAWK All around the Mulberry Bush, The kitty chased the Dodo. The kitty thought it all was in fun. Gulp! goes the Dodo!

SCENE 3 - THE FAULT OF BEING LOST IN WHICH ALICE CATCHES UP WITH THE WHITE RABBIT

[ALICE wanders on from Stage Left. The WHITE RABBIT races on from Stage Right. ALICE grabs her arm.]

ALICE There you are! Why did you bring us here?

RABBIT Me? If you’re here, my dear girl, it’s your own doing.

ALICE We didn’t ask to come here.

RABBIT You asked for trouble. You seem like the kind of child who always gets herself in trouble. If you’re lost, it’s your own fault. (pokes her)

ALICE Don’t poke me. (poking White Rabbit)

[WHITE RABBIT pokes ALICE. ALICE pokes the WHITE RABBIT. WHITE RABBIT pokes ALICE harder. ALICE pokes WHITE RABBIT harder. They start furiously poking one another. ALICE in WONDERLAND 22.

Enter JACKIE CLUB, JACKIE DIAMOND and JACKIE SPADE, ushering the MOCK TURTLE.]

ALICE (CONT’D) Quit poking!

MOCK TURTLE I would never quit peking. He’s the finest duck I know.

ALICE What are you?

MOCK TURTLE Mock Turtle at your service.

CLUB You’re at the Queen’s service, Turtle.

MOCK TURTLE Steady, Club. You’re not at war now.

CLUB Which is a shame!

ALICE What is a Mock Turtle?

DIAMOND It’s what Mock Turtle Soup is made from.

MOCK TURTLE Don’t take Diamond seriously. She’s not as sharp as she thinks she is.

DIAMOND I suppose you’re the brilliant one. That’s clear, is it?

SPADE So this is where we find you, Rabbit? Playing games with a child.

CLUB While we confront the apoplectic signs haunting the castle?

RABBIT (pause) You mean the queen? ALICE in WONDERLAND 23.

SPADE I believe you meant apocalyptic.

CLUB What does that mean?

SPADE End of the world.

CLUB Cards alive! It’s worse than I thought! Everyone, move out!

[ALICE begins to move with them.]

DIAMOND Not you, child. The signs we’ve seen have nothing to do with you.

[Exit ALL except ALICE.]

ALICE (thinks) The rabbit was right... Lorina and Edith are here because of me. Poor Edith is probably crying somewhere. And Lorina must be tearing her hair out. I have to rescue them.

[Exit.]

SCENE 4 - GREETING AND GOOD MANNERS IN WHICH LORINA MEETS THE CATERPILLAR

SONGS: STOMPA

[Stage Right is the CATERPILLAR. Also looking on are TWEEDLE-DEE, TWEEDLE-DUM (from center) and a CHESIRE CAT (stage-left). Sleeping further stage-left is a large GRIFFIN.

Enter MAD HATTER, MARCH HARE, MAY HAM and DORMOUSE.

SHOWCASE: VOICE sits on inner corners downstage with flowers. Other performers are various BUSHES, giving Chesire Cat ways to slink unseen from place to place.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 24.

MAD HATTER (to Caterpillar) Pardon me, my good... thingy—

CHESIRE CAT 1 She has a name.

MARCH HARE Wonderful! What is it?

CHESIRE CAT 1 Caterpillar.

MAD HATTER (thinks) What’s your brother’s name?

CATERPILLAR Caterpillar.

MAY HAM Your sister’s?

CHESIRE CAT 1 Caterpillar.

DORMOUSE Your mother’s?

CATERPILLAR Caterpillar.

MAY HAM Easy to remember.

CHESIRE CAT 2 What brings you round here, Hatter?

MAD HATTER I’m glad you asked. (to Caterpillar) We thought you might have some spare sweetener?

MARCH HARE Unexpected guest at the homestead.

DORMOUSE A rather large guest. ALICE in WONDERLAND 25.

MAY HAM I said to meself, if anyone has some spare sweetener—

CATERPILLAR What, precisely, gave you that impression?

MAD HATTER (pause) Your sweet disposition. (pause) Your awkward stare. (pause) Your freakish number of arms.

CATERPILLAR Search elsewhere.

MARCH HARE Right-o!

DORMOUSE Understood!

MAY HAM Toodle-oo!

[They make a large show of turning around and take only a step toward TWEEDLE-DEE and TWEEDLE-DUM.]

MARCH HARE Hello! (beat, looking at twin) And hello again!

DORMOUSE Might you spare us a small amount of—

CATERPILLAR Search elsewhere!

[They sidle toward CHESIRE CAT. CHESIRE CAT raises a clawed hand. They sidle toward sleeping GRIFFIN. CHESIRE CAT raises other hand in clawed-fashion. They sidle toward the wings.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 26.

MAY HAM (departing, to Caterpillar) Good day... what was your name again?

[CATERPILLAR gives a withering stare and the party scrambles away.]

LORINA (off-stage) Alice...? Edith...?

[Enter LORINA with her fingers pressed against her temples, having something of a panic attack.]

LORINA (CONT’D) What am I going to do? What am I going to do? Alice! Edith!

CATERPILLAR (over-prounouncing Wh’s) Who is Alice? What must she eat and why?

LORINA (looking around) Huh? (spotting Caterpillar and taken aback) OH! Wh-what are you?

CHESIRE CAT 2 (from behind Lorina) Don’t be scared, love.

[LORINA jumps.]

LORINA What are you?

[LORINA backs into TWEEDLE-DUM.]

TWEEDLE-DUM If you think we’re wax-works, you ought to pay, you know.

TWEEDLE-DEE Contrawise, if you think we’re alive, you ought to address us.

LORINA Have any of you seen two young girls? One dressed in blue, the other in— ALICE in WONDERLAND 27.

TWEEDLE-DUM You’ve begun wrong.

TWEEDLE-DEE All wrong.

CHESIRE CAT 2 The poor girl doesn’t know any better.

TWEEDLE-DUM The first thing to say is, “How d’ye do?”

CATERPILLAR It’s only good manners.

TWEEDLE-DEE And then shake hands.

[CHESIRE CAT has disappeared behind one of two trees on-stage and reappears behind the mushroom.]

CHESIRE CAT 1 Make sure to smile.

[LORINA reaches a hesitant hand out to TWEEDLE-DUM. It is taken by TWEEDLE- DEE, crossing her arm across her chest. TWEEDLE-DUM seizes the other hand so both arms end up crossed. They shake vigorously.]

CATERPILLAR I prefer a courteous bow, of course. Who knows where those hands have been. (points to twins)

[TWEEDLE-DUM is using free hand to pick nose. TWEEDLE-DEE has a finger in his ear. Lorina snatches her hands away and rubs them on her dress - with great reluctance. We hear a heavy breathing.]

LORINA Is this forest even safe?

CATERPILLAR What precisely would make it unsafe? ALICE in WONDERLAND 28.

LORINA I don’t know... Lions... tigers... bears...

TWEEDLE-DEE & TWEEDLE DUM Oh, my!

CHESIRE CAT 1 Safe, if those are your standards, child.

[Disappears behind 2nd tree.]

LORINA Then what is that noise?

CHESIRE CAT 2 (emerging from behind Griffin) That’s the great Griffin here.

TWEEDLE-DUM What a lovely sight.

CATERPILLAR Now, what do you suppose he can be dreaming about?

[Lorina shrugs.]

TWEEDLE-DEE About you of course!

CHESIRE CAT 2 You’re part of his dream.

CATERPILLAR And what do you suppose happens when he wakes?

TWEEDLE-DEE Poof! You vanish!

TWEEDLE-DUM No more funny girl.

CHESIRE CAT 2 Which would be an awful shame.

LORINA If I’m in his dream, then so are all of you. If I go away, so do you. ALICE in WONDERLAND 29.

TWEEDLE-DEE & TWEEDLE DUM (consider) She’s right!

GRIFFIN (sleepy, raising head) Huh? Wha-what? Who’s right?

TWEEDLE-DEE & TWEEDLE DUM AHH! (sing) Go to sleep... Go to sleep... Go to sleep, little Griffin.

CATERPILLAR You all seem much too worried.

CHESIRE CAT 2 Not I. I’m used to disappearing. (vanishes behind mushroom)

LORINA This place is not right!

CATERPILLAR It’s right of something...

LORINA My sisters are lost!

CATERPILLAR And you are not?

CHESIRE CAT 1 (appearing behind tree) We’re all lost in our own lost ways.

TWEEDLE-DUM (pointing to ground) AHH! Do you see that?!

CHESIRE CAT 1 Now he’s gone and lost his temper.

LORINA It’s just an old broken rattle. ALICE in WONDERLAND 30.

TWEEDLE-DUM It is broken - but it’s not old. (turns slowly to Tweedle-Dee, scowling)

TWEEDLE-DEE I only wanted to play with it.

TWEEDLE-DUM You... broke it!

CHESIRE CAT 2 (suddenly behind Tweedle-Dee) Remember the griffin!

TWEEDLE-DUM (ignoring Chesire Cat, to Tweedle-Dee) You know we must battle!

TWEEDLE-DEE (scared) Must we?

CATERPILLAR (tired) Must you?

TWEEDLE-DUM We must!

CATERPILLAR They do this every afternoon.

TWEEDLE-DUM What’s the time?

CHESIRE CAT 2 Half past a lunatic.

TWEEDLE-DUM Very good. We’ll fight ‘til quarter of sanity.

CATERPILLAR I doubt you’ll last that long.

CHESIRE CAT 2 (to Lorina) You might want to step back, dear. ALICE in WONDERLAND 31.

TWEEDLE-DEE (to Lorina, sadly) Yes. I generally hit everything I see.

[Chesire Cat tip-toes behind tree.]

TWEEDLE-DUM And I hit everything within reach, whether I see it or not. Battle!!!

GRIFFIN (raising head) Battle?

TWEEDLE-DEE & TWEEDLE DUM Rock-a-bye, Griffin, On the tree top When the wind blows Your tail will go plop

LORINA I haven’t got time for this. I need to find my sisters.

TWEEDLE-DEE & TWEEDLE DUM Twinkle, twinkle, Griffin bat How I wonder why you’re fat.

LORINA I’m leaving. (storms toward wings)

CATERPILLAR Go if you must — but had you waited patiently you’d have learned something very valuable.

[Lorina marches back and stands stiffly before the CATERPILLAR. ALICE in WONDERLAND 32.

He is calmly looking off in the distance while the CHESIRE CAT looks back and forth. Finally, with a glance in her direction, Caterpillar sighs and turns to her.]

CATERPILLAR (CONT'D) (pause) You must keep your temper.

LORINA (short pause, through clenched teeth) Is that it?

CATERPILLAR No...

[SHOWCASE: VOICE resumes spots during repeat. Exit SPOTLIGHT and CENTER STAGE.

Angry, LORINA storms off. She stops before the stage-left curtain, turns and kicks the GRIFFIN. Exits.]

GRIFFIN I’m up! I’m up!

[TWEEDLE-DEE and TWEEDLE-DUM scream and cringe. Slowly they calm, examining themselves.]

TWEEDLE-DEE Oh. We’re still here.

[TWEEDLE-DUM knocks TWEEDLE-DEE in the head. TWEEDLE-DEE falls over, unconscious.]

CHESIRE CAT 2 Well done. Now yourself.

TWEEDLE-DUM Why would I?

CATERPILLAR It would give me great pleasure. ALICE in WONDERLAND 34.

GRIFFIN Likewise.

TWEEDLE-DUM I’m not going to swing my weapon up against my own head like this.

[TWEEDLE-DUM knocks himself unconscious.]

CHESIRE CAT 2 Well played, champ.

[Enter RED KNIGHT, spotting TWEEDLE- DEE.]

RED KNIGHT My dear friend, are you all right? He’s unconscious! I will fetch some smelling salts.

[Exit RED KNIGHT. Enter WHITE KNIGHT, spotting TWEEDLE-DUM.]

WHITE KNIGHT My dear friend, are you all right? He’s unconscious! I will fetch some smelling salts.

CATERPILLAR (not amused) And I thought the amusement was done for the day...

[Re-enter RED KNIGHT and WHITE KNIGHT. They rush to their respective TWEEDLES, then spot one another.]

RED KNIGHT & WHITE KNIGHT You! Villain! What have you done to that poor person? You will pay for your treachery! Have at thee, man!

[They draw and begin to battle. Their sword-play moves them to the edge of the stage and then past the proscenium. As they have now moved into the aisles with the audience, they look around.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 35.

RED KNIGHT Where are we?

WHITE KNIGHT This doesn’t look like Caterpillar Glen.

RED KNIGHT It’s a strange dark place.

WHITE KNIGHT So many staring eyes.

RED KNIGHT Should we flee?

WHITE KNIGHT (nervous) Knights do not flee.

[Meanwhile, the CHESIRE CAT has sidled up behind them. She leans forward between their two heads.]

CHESIRE CAT 1 Boo.

[The KNIGHTS scream and race back to the stage and into the wings while the CHESIRE CAT laughs and CATERPILLAR shakes her head.]

SCENE 5 - TOUCH OF PEPPER IN WHICH ALICE DEBATES WITH A DUCHESS AND ANIMALS BRING EDITH TOWARD THE QUEEN’S CASTLE

SONGS: NEW SOUL

[ALICE wanders onto stage. She finds herself outside of cottage. A HEDGE stands before the house (held by performers) and, close to the front door, FLOWERS stand tall (operated by performers).

ALICE DOUBLE takes place behind gate near hedges. ALICE in WONDERLAND 36.

Black fabric is waved in air over CHEF by performers.]

ALICE edges toward house. The flowers turn toward her, giving her pause.

Outside sits the DUCHESS in her rocking chair while KELE smashes a doll on the ground - occasionally sneezing. A cloud of pepper dust floats in the air (fabric kept in air by side- performers) as the CHEF boils a large cauldron hanging over a fire.

ALICE pauses. The others ignore her. She knocks on door to get their attention.]

CHEF (without turning) Mon Dieu! Zere is no uze in knocking!

DUCHESS (without looking) We’re on the same side of the door as you.

KELE Anyone can see that.

[ALICE glares at them for a moment, then smiles mischievously. She opens the door, steps inside and closes the door. After a pause, she knocks.

DUCHESS, KELE and CHEF stop. They look to the door. KELE slowly stands, sneezes, goes to the door and opens it.]

KELE (CONT’D) (confused) Hello?

ALICE Is your mother at home?

KELE (still confused) Yes. She’s there. (points) ALICE in WONDERLAND 37.

ALICE That would place her out of home, wouldn’t it? I’ll come back when she’s in.

[ALICE marches off, opening the gate and marching off through the hedges.]

CHEF Ah, zah girl thinkz she is clever.

[We see ALICE’s legs pass behind the hedge stems, but no sooner has she disappeared at the far end than ALICE re-emerges through the door of the house. She is completely shocked and baffled. (It was Alice’s double who walked.)]

DUCHESS But not as clever as she thinks.

[KELE points and laughs - and sneezes - and snorts (like a pig) - at ALICE.]

ALICE It’s rude to laugh and point.

DUCHESS It’s rude to enter a home uninvited.

ALICE If I had waited, you’d never have extended the invitation.

CHEF We most certainly would have NOT.

KELE You should have minded your own business.

DUCHESS If everyone minded their own business, the world would go round a good deal faster than it does.

ALICE Which would make quite a mess of night and day. You see, the earth turns on its axis and, therefore, it—

CHEF (shaking pepper shaker at her) Tell it to za queen. She knowz all bout ze axes. ALICE in WONDERLAND 38.

ALICE You shouldn’t cook with so much pepper. It’s making the child sneeze.

CHEF Don’t tell me, child! Zere is nothing like pepper! Boil it so easily, mix it so greasily, stir is so sneezily. One, two, three!

[Jabs pepper at ALICE. ALICE has a sneezing fit.]

ALICE (recovering, to Duchess) Pardon me, Ms...

DUCHESS Duchess.

ALICE Pardon?

DUCHESS I am a Duchess. It’s a title I earned.

ALICE (sincerely) How did you earn it?

DUCHESS How dare you? You think I don’t deserve it?

ALICE No. I didn’t mean...

KELE She is mean! Send her to the Queen!

ALICE I beg your pardon.

DUCHESS (calming, eyeing Alice) It isn’t respectable to beg.

[Enter the ANIMALS and EDITH, searching for the way to the Queen of Hearts’ castle. They cross behind the scene from Stage Left to Stage Right.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 39.

ALICE I’m looking for my sisters. I think they’re lost.

CHEF You zink zey are lost? And you are not lost?

ALICE (matter-of-factly) No.

CHEF (challenging) You know precizely where you are?

ALICE Yes.

CHEF Where exactly are you, little child?

ALICE Here. By the home of a Duchess talking with a chef who uses as much pepper in his attitude as he does in his stew.

CHEF (pause, smiles) Zat I cannot argue with.

DUCHESS It’s settled. I will take you to the Queen - if you are going to make such a fuss over it.

ALICE I have made no fuss - yet. Why are we going to the Queen?

DUCHESS Because she will know best where to find your sisters.

CHEF And I’m sure she’d love talking with you.

[ANIMALS and EDITH should be off-stage again.]

KELE Yes. The Queen has such a sharp wit. You’re likely to laugh your head clean off. ALICE in WONDERLAND 40.

ALICE And you’re likely to have your nose tweaked.

KELE How would that be?

ALICE From a horrid nose-tweaking... eye-poking... Twitch. (pointing) There’s one now!

[All look in horror.]

ALICE (CONT’D) Close your eyes before it jabs them!

[All close and cover their eyes - but not their noses. ALICE grabs KELE’s nose and pulls up hard.]

KELE (still covering eyes) OWWW!!!

ALICE It’s got you! Shoo! Shoo! Get out of here!

[She looks at the three, still trembling and KELE whimpering. She chuckles to herself.]

ALICE (CONT’D) It’s gone.

CHEF Zank goodness. I had never heard of zis nose-tweaking, eye- poking Twitch.

DUCHESS Well, let’s be off before it comes back.

ALICE Yes. Let’s.

[They move off as ANIMALS and EDITH re- enter. EDITH is sobbing.

Enter SHOWCASE: VOICE] ALICE in WONDERLAND 41.

DODO & MOUSE What’s the matter, Eee-dithhh?

EDITH Where are my sisters?

FLAMINGO We don’t know, honey.

FAWN But we’ll find them.

FROG, TOAD & ROOSTER Unless, of course, we don’t.

[EDITH cries more.]

MUSKRAT (scowling) Nice going, friends.

[GUINEA and PIGGY are whispering toward GECKO.]

GECKO DODO & MOUSE Something’s telling me we’re close.

GUINEA & PIGGY (whispering louder) We’re close... We’re close...

DUCK & PARROT (to Guinea Pigs) Would you stop it?

STORK (to Edith) Things must seem pretty strange, huh?

EDITH Yes.

GULLY & SQUAWK Especially with your strange hair, gangly arms and forward- facing eyes.

[She cries more. The SEA GULLS look around with expression of ‘what-did-I-say’?] ALICE in WONDERLAND 42.

NEW SOUL I'M A NEW SOUL I CAME TO THIS STRANGE WORLD HOPING I COULD LEARN A BIT ABOUT HOW TO GIVE AND TAKE. BUT SINCE I CAME HERE FELT THE JOY AND THE FEAR FINDING MYSELF MAKING EVERY POSSIBLE MISTAKE

LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA...

I'M A YOUNG SOUL IN THIS VERY STRANGE WORLD HOPING I COULD LEARN A BIT BOUT WHAT IS TRUE AND FAKE. BUT WHY ALL THIS HATE? TRY TO COMMUNICATE FINDING TRUST AND LOVE IS NOT ALWAYS EASY TO MAKE.

LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA...

[Enter RED KNIGHT.]

RED KNIGHT A damsel in distress! Besieged by hideous beasts! I shall need my sword!

[Exit RED KNIGHT.]

GULLY & SQUAWK Who’s he calling ‘hideous’?

[Enter WHITE KNIGHT.]

WHITE KNIGHT A damsel in distress! Besieged by hideous beasts! I shall need my sword!

[Exit WHITE KNIGHT.]

DODO & MOUSE De ja vu.

DUCK & PARROT Not just that. It’s like the same thing all over again.

FLAMINGO Here they come again.

[Enter RED KNIGHT and WHITE KNIGHT.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 43.

RED KNIGHT & WHITE KNIGHT (with swords) You! I might have known. So, these are your monsters.

GUINEA & PIGGY Monsters?

RED KNIGHT & WHITE KNIGHT Have at thee, villain!

[They fight.]

EDITH Should we do something?

MUSKRAT What did you have in mind?

FAWN I’m for running away.

[The two fight their way to the opposite end of the audience from last time, having crossed the proscenium again. They stop.]

RED KNIGHT We’ve done it again.

WHITE KNIGHT Why are they always watching?

RED KNIGHT Run away!

WHITE KNIGHT Mommy!

FROG, TOAD & ROOSTER That was... odd.

GECKO DODO & MOUSE Shall we continue?

STORK Yes. And pretend this never happened. ALICE in WONDERLAND 44.

EDITH I can’t wait to get to the Queen’s place.

[Exit EDITH and ANIMALS.]

SHOWCASE: VOICE I'M A NEW SOUL I CAME TO THIS STRANGE WORLD HOPING I COULD LEARN A BIT ABOUT HOW TO GIVE AND TAKE. BUT SINCE I CAME HERE FELT THE JOY AND THE FEAR FINDING MYSELF MAKING EVERY POSSIBLE MISTAKE

SCENE 6 - THE MISEDUCATION OF MOCK TURTLE IN WHICH THE QUEEN AND HER COURT TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE SIGNS FROM SCENE 1

[Opposite, QUEEN of HEARTS sits in her throne with KING OF HEARTS, JACKIE DIAMOND, JACKIE HEART, JACKIE SPADE, and JACKIE CLUB. Joining them are WHITE RABBIT and MOCK TURTLE.]

RABBIT Again, your Majesty, I apologize profusely for my tardiness.

CLUB Tardiness?

SPADE (correcting) Tartiness.

DIAMOND (explaining) Of or having a flavor related to tarts.

CLUB Ahh. (beat) Tarts?

SPADE Pastries. Tarts are pastries. ALICE in WONDERLAND 45.

CLUB I see. He is apologizing for his... pastry-like flavor.

DIAMOND Now you’ve got it.

[It is clear from JACKIE CLUB’s face that she is as baffled as ever - as she should be. It is the content confidence of JACKIE CLUB and DIAMOND that is incorrect. Each time JACKIE CLUB and DIAMOND look at JACKIE CLUB, she smiles as if understanding, but the moment they look away she is baffled. They do this twice before scene resumes.]

RABBIT (to Queen) I assure you nothing like it will ever happen again.

QUEEN OF HEARTS Enough!

RABBIT As long as you do understand that—

QUEEN OF HEARTS Silence yourself, Rabbit, or I will silence you.

RABBIT I apologize.

HEART Silence!

RABBIT Sorry!

QUEEN OF HEARTS Silence!

RABBIT I don’t mean to—

[KING of HEARTS bops Rabbit on head.]

KING OF HEARTS Quit while you’re a head, Rabbit. ALICE in WONDERLAND 46.

[RABBIT covers mouth to keep from speaking (and head due to the bopping.]

HEART Now, Mock Turtle, we need you to interpret these strange signs seen by Jackie Diamond.

DIAMOND (stepping forward) It is my belief—

SPADE (pushing Diamond back) You had your chance.

HEART Three stars have fallen from the sky - pink, blue and green.

KING OF HEARTS Were you taught in the ways of Astrology?

MOCK TURTLE Of course. My master was the great sea turtle, Tortoise.

RABBIT Tortoise? I thought he was a sea turtle.

MOCK TURTLE Of course he was. We called him Tortoise.

RABBIT Why call him a tortoise if he wasn’t one?

MOCK TURTLE Because he taught us.

HEART You ought to be ashamed for asking such a simple question.

MOCK TURTLE I am also learned in Reeling and Writhing.

DIAMOND Most impressive.

MOCK TURTLE Plus the four branches of Arithmetic — Ambition, Distraction, Uglification and Derision. ALICE in WONDERLAND 47.

CLUB Ahh, yes. I am partial to Ambition and Derision.

MOCK TURTLE In the arts, I studied Drawling - though my professor was an old crab.

SPADE I assume you studied languages as well.

MOCK TURTLE The classics. Laughing and Grief. Lessons were ten hours the first day, nine the next and so on.

RABBIT Seems a rather curious plan with classes getting shorter.

HEART That’s why they’re called lessons - because they lessen from day to day.

RABBIT Ah. (thinks) How did you manage on the twelfth?

[All others are wide-eyed as they realize it would require negative hours.]

KING OF HEARTS Enough about education.

QUEEN OF HEARTS Enough court business entirely.

HEART Croquet anyone?

[All exit in a bustle past WHITE RABBIT and MOCK TURTLE. They are left alone.]

RABBIT What about the fallen stars? The possibly cataclysmic signs of doom?

MOCK TURTLE (absently, looking up from a paper) The who and the what now? ALICE in WONDERLAND 48.

[WHITE RABBIT pans to audience.]

SCENE 7 - IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD PARTY IN WHICH LORINA ENLISTS THE HELP OF THE MAD HATTER

SONGS: CRAZY

[LORINA wanders onto stage. A number of TREES skirt along with her, carried by performers. BIRDS flutter about the branches. LORINA stops. The trees stop. She steps forward and the TREES take one step with her. She takes two. They take two. The BIRDS flutter each time the TREES move. Stage Left is the MAD HATTER and characters from the Tea Party (see below)]

LORINA Is this whole place mad?

[The CHESIRE CAT pops head through trees.]

CHESIRE CAT 1 Quite!

LORINA OH! You scared me. Do you know which way I should go?

CHESIRE CAT 1 That all depends on where you’d like to be.

LORINA Home.

CHESIRE CAT 1 Straight ahead then. (pause, Lorina starts) It’s the Hatter’s home.

[Vanishes into trees. CHESIRE CAT 2 emerges from wings behind LORINA.

LORINA I meant my home. ALICE in WONDERLAND 49.

CHESIRE CAT 2 (surprising her) You didn’t specify.

LORINA Can the Hatter help me find my sisters?

CHESIRE CAT 2 I doubt it. He’s quite mad. (encouraging) But he lives with a March Hare.

LORINA Can he help?

CHESIRE CAT 2 I doubt it. He’s just as mad.

[CHESIRE CAT 2 ducks head behind one end of trees. CHESIRE CAT 1’s head pops out the other head - impossibly far from its tail.]

LORINA I don’t want to be among mad people!!

[BIRDS flutter away.]

CHESIRE CAT 1 Oh, you can’t help that. We’re all bonkers here. But I’ll tell you a secret...

[Chesire Cat 1’s head retracts. Chesire Cat 2’s head appears.

CHESIRE CAT 2 All the best people are.

[The trees hurry away. The CHESIRE CAT exits with them. Frustrated, LORINA walks.

At the table is MAD HATTER, MARCH HARE, MAY HAM, DORMOUSE, TWEEDLE DEE, TWEEDLE DUM, and the ELEPHANT in the ROOM.

MAY HAM is at one end of the table. The other side is empty. The others are all on the upstage end of the table. ALICE in WONDERLAND 50.

DORMOUSE is in the very center. On either side are MAD HATTER and MARCH HARE. The twins are closest to MAY HAM and the ELEPHANT is closest to the empty seat.

The DORMOUSE is snoring, its head shifting from MAD HATTER to MARCH HARE as each seems to reach for tea or jam at different times.

LORINA takes a deep breath and approaches the now stationary table.]

MAD HATTER & MARCH HARE No room! No room!

LORINA Don’t be daft. There’s plenty of room. (she sits)

MARCH HARE (glaring at Lorina) Have some wine.

LORINA (looking about table) I don’t see any wine.

MAY HAM There isn’t any.

LORINA Then it wasn’t very civil of you to offer.

MARCH HARE It wasn’t very civil of you to sit without being invited.

MAD HATTER Introductions! Your name!

LORINA (startled) Lorina.

MAD HATTER (nods) Introduction are over! Pass a clean cup, please. ALICE in WONDERLAND 51.

[MAY HAM grabs a cup. It is dirty. He spits in it, wipes it with his bare hands and gives it to MAD HATTER who takes it with a grateful bow.]

LORINA I don’t know who you are.

MAY HAM Let’s not squibble over details.

LORINA I suppose I will have to guess. You must be the March Hare.

MARCH HARE Charmed, you’re sure.

LORINA And you’re the Hatter.

MAD HATTER (slams fist on table) Did you call me the Mad Hatter?

LORINA Certainly not.

MAD HATTER (slams fist down again) Why not? (suddenly calm and merry) Has a nice ring to it.

TWEEDLE-DEE You know me! I’m Tweedle-Dum!

TWEEDLE-DUM No you’re not. I’m Dum.

MAY HAM No one can argue with that.

DORMOUSE Knock, knock!

LORINA (pause) Who’s there? ALICE in WONDERLAND 52.

DORMOUSE Dormouse.

LORINA Dormouse who?

DORMOUSE (pause) Dormouse me.

[DORMOUSE falls asleep, head clonking down on table.]

LORINA Since he’s the March Hare, perhaps you’re the April Pig?

MARCH HARE Wrong! That’s the May Ham. So there.

LORINA You’re all terribly silly.

MAY HAM And you’re terribly dull.

LORINA Better dull than rude. (point to Elephant) Who’s this?

MAD HATTER & MARCH HARE No one! / Nobody! / Nothing there! (whistle, look everywhere but at elephant)

TWEEDLE-DEE (whispering loudly) It’s the Elephant in the Room.

LORINA But we’re not in a room.

TWEEDLE-DUM We’ve chosen to ignore the fact.

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM If Wonderland is underground... where’s all the light coming from? ALICE in WONDERLAND 53.

[MAD HATTER and MARCH HARE freeze, wide-eyed.]

MAD HATTER More tea, mouse?

DORMOUSE Thank you.

MAD HATTER (to Lorina) And you? (pours cup for her)

MARCH HARE She ought to pay!

[MAD HATTER shrugs to LORINA. She pulls out a coin. The MARCH HARE snatches it, bites it and pockets it. MAD HATTER hands cup across to LORINA. DORMOUSE leaps up.]

DORMOUSE Pass the jam! (she bumps cup, spilling it)

MAY HAM That’s a misfortune.

MAD HATTER Your next drink is on me. (pours a cup then splashes it in his own face, sits.) Riddles! May Ham?

MAY HAM Why is a raven like a writing desk?

LORINA I can guess that.

DORMOUSE Do you mean you think you can find the answer?

[LORINA nods.]

MARCH HARE You should say what you mean. ALICE in WONDERLAND 54.

LORINA I do — at least, I mean what I say. It’s the same thing.

MAD HATTER Not at all! You might just as well say, “I see what I eat” is the same as “I eat what I see”.

MARCH HARE Or “I like what I get” is the same as “I get what I like”.

DORMOUSE Or “I breathe when I sleep” is the same as “I sleep when I breathe.”

MARCH HARE (to Dormouse) It is the same thing with you.

[DORMOUSE laughs uproariously then falls asleep. MAD HATTER splashes her with tea.]

MAY HAM Have you solved the riddle?

LORINA No. What’s the answer?

MAY HAM I haven’t the slightest idea.

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM (thinks) The notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes.

[MAD HATTER and MARCH HARE again freeze with eyes wide.]

LORINA I would think you could all do better things with time than wasting it.

MARCH HARE (stands, slams fist into table) If you knew Time as I do, you wouldn’t talk about wasting it. It’s him. ALICE in WONDERLAND 55.

MAY HAM She doesn’t understand.

MARCH HARE Of course she doesn’t! What does she know of Time?

LORINA I know I beat it when I learn music.

[They all scream.]

TWEEDLE-DEE & TWEEDLE DUM The horror...

MARCH HARE I cannot stand for this! (sits) That’s better. (calm again) Take more tea.

LORINA I haven’t taken any, so I can’t take more.

MAY HAM You can’t take less. It’s easy to take more than nothing.

LORINA When precisely did you all go MAD?!

[MAD HATTER, MARCH HARE, MAY HAM and DORMOUSE look to each other.

Enter SHOWCASE: VOICE with music, singing.]

[LORINA, by this time has joined in the dance having made a slow move from being against them to enjoying their madness.]

LORINA (CONT’D) Help me find my sisters.

MAD HATTER Sounds like fun.

MARCH HARE To the Queen of Hearts’ castle!

MAY HAM If your sisters have made friends, they’ve been led there.

DORMOUSE If your sisters have made enemies, they’ve been dragged there. ALICE in WONDERLAND 57.

MAD HATTER Partners? (extends hand)

LORINA (shaking it) Partners.

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM Better mad with the rest of the world than wise alone.

LORINA (pause) I didn’t hear anything, did you?

MAD HATTER (knowingly) Not a thing.

SCENE 8 - A ROSE BY ANY OTHER COLOR WOULD SMELL LIKE PAINT IN WHICH EDITH ENCOUNTERS SOME ODD CARDS

[ 1, 3, 5, 7 race about with brushes and red paint cans. They are in a panic.

They chase ROSE BUSHES that keep leaping up, running about stage, rooting, then leaping up again.]

ACE OF SPADES & 3 OF SPADES Get them! Get them all!

5 OF SPADES & 7 OF SPADES Stay still, you bushes!

ACE OF SPADES & 3 OF SPADES The paint’s not sticking. It’s not sticking!

5 OF SPADES & 7 OF SPADES It has to stick! You’re not using enough!

5 OF SPADES & 7 OF SPADES (CONT’D) It’s not sticking! ALICE in WONDERLAND 58.

[Enter EDITH with GUINEA, PIGGY, SQUAWK, GULLY, MOUSE, DODO and ROOSTER.]

EDITH & ROOSTER Excuse us.

GUINEA & PIGGY Could you tell us where to find the queen?

ACE OF SPADES & 3 OF SPADES The Queen?!

5 OF SPADES & 7 OF SPADES She’s here?!

[SPADES scream in terror. They are joined by GULLY and SQUAWK.]

DODO & MOUSE What are you two screaming for?

[GULLY and SQUAWK shrug.]

EDITH & ROOSTER (to Spades) What’s the matter, friends?

GUINEA & PIGGY Why are you painting ?

ACE OF SPADES & 3 OF SPADES These bushes were supposed to be red roses.

5 OF SPADES & 7 OF SPADES (pointing to S1 and S3) They planted white.

ACE OF SPADES & 3 OF SPADES It wasn’t us!

5 OF SPADES & 7 OF SPADES It was! The Queen will have your heads!

MOUSE & DODO You can’t expect her to be that angry. ALICE in WONDERLAND 59.

[The CARDS simply stare at the seagulls, wondering how they could be so ignorant about the Queen of Hearts.

Suddenly, the air fills with the sound of marching voices.]

ACE OF SPADES & 3 OF SPADES It’s the !

5 OF SPADES & 7 OF SPADES Hide us!

[They hide behind EDITH and the ANIMALS.]

GUINEA & PIGGY It’s an army.

[Enter CLUBS, marching in time. It is something of a march and something of a dance. They slowly work their way around EDITH, the ANIMALS and the SPADE CARDS, who are all shuffling to Center Stage.

The CARDS stop at attention then point their spears in at the group.

CLUB CARDS Stand, in the name of the Queen! (pause, spears rise and their heads snap to rose tree) Why are these roses painted? (they point with spears)

EDITH & ROOSTER They were supposed to be red.

CLUB CARDS (spears shift to Edith) Who are you?

EDITH My name is Edith.

GULLY & SQUAWK Actually, it’s Eeeee-dithhh.

CLUB CARDS Silence! Did you paint them? ALICE in WONDERLAND 60.

[Edith shakes head.]

CLUB CARDS (CONT’D) Who painted them?

GUINEA & PIGGY (to Spades) Come, friends. Owe up to your mistakes.

ACE, 3, 5, & 7 OF SPADES (poking heads out) Never.

CLUB CARDS Who painted them?!

[The group looks to Mouse and Dodo.]

DODO & MOUSE Nobody?

ACE OF CLUBS & 2 OF CLUBS (looking to one another, snapping back) You saw... Nobody?

DODO & MOUSE Nobody.

3 OF CLUBS & 4 OF CLUBS What did he look like?

5 OF CLUBS & 6 OF CLUBS We always hear about this thief, but never see him.

7 OF CLUBS & 8 OF CLUBS “Who broke the pumping well?”

9 OF CLUBS & 10 OF CLUBS A & 2 Nobody.

ACE OF CLUBS & 2 OF CLUBS 3 & 4 “Who pulled the handle off the door?”

3 OF CLUBS & 4 OF CLUBS 5 & 6 Nobody.

5 OF CLUBS & 6 OF CLUBS 7 & 8 “Who ate the last dumpling?” ALICE in WONDERLAND 61.

7 OF CLUBS & 8 OF CLUBS A & 2 Nobody.

9 OF CLUBS & 10 OF CLUBS 3 & 4 He’s a menace!

ACE OF SPADES & 3 OF SPADES Something ought to be done about him!

5 OF SPADES & 7 OF SPADES Maybe this group knows where he’s hiding.

CLUB CARDS (snapping to attention) Good point! (level spears at group)

GULLY & SQUAWK (trying to push away spear tips) No... bad point. Bad point.

CLUB CARDS Off to the Queen! March!

[EDITH and the ANIMALS are marched away by CLUBS, leaving SPADES alone on-stage. They look to each other then run away in opposite direction.]

SCENE 9 - AS CLEAR AS RED AND WHITE IN WHICH ALICE LEARNS WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO UPSET THE QUEEN

[ALICE, DUCHESS, PEPPER CHEF and KELE march along. The GRIFFIN is sleeping on the ground.]

DUCHESS Here we are — the gates of the Queen’s castle.

ALICE (starts forward then looks back) Aren’t you coming in?

DUCHESS I don’t think so. ALICE in WONDERLAND 62.

CHEF Last time she was here, za Queen said zat she had best be off... or her head would be.

DUCHESS So I will bid you good day.

KELE Awww... Mommy, I wanted to see someone get—! (makes cutting head motion with noise)

DUCHESS And, as that is most likely me, I will graciously decline.

[GRIFFIN lifts his head.]

GRIFFIN You didn’t take her seriously, Duchess. Did you?

KELE It’s the griffin! Come see!

DUCHESS Stay back! He’s likely to snap off your fingers.

GRIFFIN Too small.

CHEF Your whole arm zen.

GRIFFIN I’m not partial to pepper - and she’s covered in it.

CHEF Not partial—?! What if I give you a beak-full?

GRIFFIN You’ll get to see what I look like from the inside - and, unlike our Queen, my threats are not idle.

KELE The Queen will have your head for such talk.

GRIFFIN Have you ever seen anyone without a head? ALICE in WONDERLAND 63.

KELE ...No.

GRIFFIN Neither have I.

DUCHESS (incredulous) What happens to people then?

GRIFFIN (to Alice) They’re taken to the dungeon.

KELE To await the... choppy-choppy!

GRIFFIN No. They just wait. No one comes for them. Sooner or later they try the door and walk away.

ALICE No one locks them in?

DUCHESS Don’t trust him. He’s trying to trick you.

CHEF Yez. He wantz to zee you shorter zen you already are.

KELE You think he’s telling , but he’s half lion.

GRIFFIN A terrible pun.

KELE I’m not afraid of you. You’re nothing more than a buzzard to me.

GRIFFIN And you’re nothing more than a snack to me.

[Enter WHITE KNIGHT, riding.]

WHITE KNIGHT Halt! Check, Griffin! Fear not, girl. I will rescue you. Come through the gates where you’ll be safe. ALICE in WONDERLAND 64.

[Enter RED KNIGHT, riding.]

RED KNIGHT Halt! Check, Griffin! Fear not, girl. I will rescue you. Pass not through those gates. With me you’ll be safe.

WHITE KNIGHT Villain! Speak no more lies.

RED KNIGHT I speak naught but the truth!

CHEF You speak not with a tooth?

RED KNIGHT Truth! Naught but the truth.

WHITE KNIGHT Ahh! You admit it. You speak not the truth!

RED KNIGHT Not ‘not’! Naught!

DUCHESS I’m lost.

ALICE You’re standing next to me near the Queen’s gates. (wry smile)

WHITE KNIGHT I shall drive my sword straight through your— (stops) Hear now! What is that lovely little box?

RED KNIGHT Ah, you like it? It’s my own invention.

CHEF You could keep sandwiches very nicely in there.

DUCHESS Yes. And since it is upside down, no rain gets in. ALICE in WONDERLAND 65.

ALICE But the things he puts in can get out. (to Red Knight) Do you know the lid is open?

RED KNIGHT Eh? Ah. No! All my things must have fallen out! (angry) And the box is useless without them!

[He throws box down and tumbles off horse.]

WHITE KNIGHT I shall help you!

[Stumbles off own horse and scramble to Red Knight.]

RED KNIGHT Good Sir Knight! I did not expect such kindness.

ALICE I’m afraid you haven’t had much practice.

RED KNIGHT What makes you say that?

ALICE When people have had practice, they don’t fall off so easily.

RED KNIGHT You think that was easy? It takes great practice to fall off like that.

WHITE KNIGHT It was a noble fall.

RED KNIGHT Thank you.

WHITE KNIGHT Join me in the Queen’s service. Together we will protect the kingdom.

RED KNIGHT Yes! Uh... protect it from whom? ALICE in WONDERLAND 66.

WHITE KNIGHT Uh... (point to Alice) Her! You’re my prisoner!

RED KNIGHT (to Duchess, Chef and Kele) You’re all our prisoners!

WHITE KNIGHT The Queen will deal with you.

CHEF But we have done nothing!

WHITE KNIGHT The Queen will decide what you have or haven’t done.

SCENE 10 - THE UNDERGROUND IN WHICH THE HATTER LEFT WHAT IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM

[Downstage Right, the CATERPILLAR sits on his mushroom. Performers wave brown fabric over the heads of MAD HATTER, LORINA, MARCH HARE, DORMOUSE, MAY HAM, TWEEDLE DEE and TWEEDLE DUM as they creep forward.]

MARCH HARE Step lively. We are now part of the underground.

LORINA Is the queen that terrible?

MAD HATTER She’s ruthless!

LORINA Really?

MAY HAM Yes, not a single person named Ruth in her entire court.

DORMOUSE Which is a shame. It’s such a pretty name.

TWEEDLE-DEE I can’t see a thing. ALICE in WONDERLAND 67.

TWEEDLE-DUM Open your eyes.

TWEEDLE-DEE Ah. Much better.

MAY HAM Dumb.

TWEEDLE-DUM I’m Dum!

LORINA If this Queen has my sisters, I will fight her with you.

DORMOUSE Fight her?

[They step out from the ‘tunnel’ of fabric.]

MARCH HARE We are no longer part of the underground.

LORINA What? You meant the tunnel? You don’t fight against the Queen?

DORMOUSE Heavens, no! We value our heads much too much.

CATERPILLAR Much too much. There’s hardly a brain between the lot of you.

TWEEDLE-DEE Even if... they’re our heads.

TWEEDLE-DUM We’re rather attached to them, you see.

[Enter CHESIRE CAT 1, behind TWEEDLES.]

CHESIRE CAT 1 Best keep them then.

[TWEEDLES yelp.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 68.

TWEEDLE-DUM Stop slinking about!

CHESIRE CAT 1 It’s what I do.

TWEEDLE-DEE Well... learn to do something else.

CHESIRE CAT 1 I could learn to pounce... to bite...

TWEEDLE-DEE Oh! Well - don’t go changin’ to try and please me.

TWEEDLE-DUM I love you just the way you are.

CHESIRE CAT 1 How sweet.

[CHESIRE CAT 1 walks behind mushroom and CHESIRE CAT 2 rises to the top with CATERPILLAR. TWEEDLE-DEE and TWEEDLE-DUM shiver.]

MAD HATTER Now, the Queen’s castle is left, right?

CATERPILLAR I don’t see how it can be both.

MAD HATTER (unsure) It’s left...

MARCH HARE Right.

MAD HATTER Right?

MARCH HARE Right.

[Walks right.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 69.

MAY HAM Your left!

MAY HAM (CONT’D) It’s “you’ve left” and not quite yet. I need to be out of sight to have officially left.

CHESIRE CAT 2 Oh, you have officially left.

MARCH HARE Hatter, you don’t understand. You were right.

MAD HATTER No, Hare, you don’t understand. I am right. I was left.

CATERPILLAR I wish you had left.

CHESIRE CAT 2 Or never come.

CATERPILLAR Even better.

DORMOUSE (to Mad Hatter) Hatter, don’t you see? You’re right.

MAD HATTER (frustrated) Of course I’m right. I walked here.

LORINA (explaining) The castle’s left.

MAD HATTER The castle has left?! How is that even possible? (has turned his back to audience, looking for castle)

DORMOUSE It’s to your left.

MAD HATTER (holds up left hand) Right! (marches Stage Right) ALICE in WONDERLAND 70.

CATERPILLAR Well, now it’s not.

MAD HATTER How does it keep changing?!

LORINA You’ve gone wrong!

MAD HATTER That’s not even a direction!

LORINA Your direction is wrong.

MAD HATTER I’m mad right now.

CHESIRE CAT 2 You’re always mad.

CATERPILLAR I thought that was common knowledge.

MAD HATTER Which way is the castle?! (points Stage Left) Left?

ALL Right.

[MAD HATTER marches Stage Right.]

ALL (CONT’D) Wrong!

[MAD HATTER grabs rim of hat, screams and races in circles. LORINA, TWEEDLE-DEE, TWEEDLE- DUM, MARCH HARE, MAY HAM and DORMOUSE chase him. He runs into wings Stage Right.]

CHESIRE CAT 1 Well, that’s over.

CATERPILLAR It’s never over. ALICE in WONDERLAND 71.

[MAD HATTER, screaming, races on and off again, Stage Right, followed by others.]

CATERPILLAR (CONT’D) See? (sighs) I suppose I shall reach the castle first.

[MAD HATTER races on still screaming, followed by others, and exits Stage Left.]

CHESIRE CAT 1 Or not.

CATERPILLAR 3... 2...

[MAD HATTER races on, still screaming, followed by others, and exits Stage Right.]

CATERPILLAR (CONT’D) Won.

CHESIRE CAT 1 Clever caterpillar.

CHESIRE CAT 2 (rolling eyes) It certainly is.

QUEEN OF HEARTS No one should be happy.

HEART Rabbit, can we get things back in order?

RABBIT Of course, your highness. (to Edith) I’m afraid you’ll have to return to the jury box, dear.

ALICE What’s this about?

SPADE What’s it about? What’s it about?! ALICE in WONDERLAND 74.

ALICE Yes, what’s it about.

SPADE I have no idea. I was asking you.

DIAMOND (swats Spade in head) It’s about the Queen of Hearts tarts.

HEART Someone is going to pay.

ALICE Pay for the tarts?

HEART Pay for taking them.

QUEEN OF HEARTS Mock Turtle, read the charges!

MOCK TURTLE (opens document, clears throat) The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts, All on a summer day: A villainous rogue, who stole those tarts Took them all far away.

QUEEN OF HEARTS Who did it?!

[A number of curtain SHADES bounce onto stage.]

RED KNIGHT & WHITE KNIGHT Not shades! Spades!

CLUB CARDS Not shades! Spades!

[SHADES bounce away. SPADES take witness box.]

DIAMOND Where were you on the upteenth of Ovember?

SPADE CARDS Uh-h-h... we don’t know!

QUEEN OF HEARTS Guilty!

CLUB I object! ALICE in WONDERLAND 76.

KING OF HEARTS On what grounds?

KING OF HEARTS Over-ruled!

CLUB Why?

KING OF HEARTS ‘Cause I’m the King and I rule over that ground.

CLUB Understood!

EDITH Taking notes, friends?

DODO & MOUSE Writing our names.

EDITH Why?

DUCK & PARROT We might forget them.

GUINEA & PIGGY We dropped our pens. We need new ones.

[They reach behind ROOSTER (or DODO) and pull out feathers. ROOSTER cries out in pain. FROG and TOAD laugh. ROOSTER swats them in the head.]

QUEEN OF HEARTS Look at those ruffians! It was probably them!

[FROG, TOAD and ROOSTER cringe.]

QUEEN OF HEARTS Because they’re delicious! (stops herself) ROSES?!

SPADE CARDS We painted the white roses red.

DIAMOND We’re talking about tarts. Someone stole the Queen of Hearts tarts.

HEART Weren’t you listening?!

CATERPILLAR No more than any of you are thinking.

KING OF HEARTS Who said that? (looking at Chesire Cat)

CHESIRE CAT 1 It wasn’t me, friend.

KING OF HEARTS Just what someone who said it would say if they didn’t want the person who heard it to know the person who said it said it!

CHESIRE CAT 1 (beat) You’re a funny man!

QUEEN OF HEARTS Off with her head! ALICE in WONDERLAND 79.

CHESIRE CAT 1 Oh, I’ll spare you the trouble.

[Sticks her head in a barrel and the head reappears across stage.]

CHESIRE CAT 2 Is this satisfactory?

QUEEN OF HEARTS Not at all! You can’t do it yourself!

CHESIRE CAT 2 I think I’ve shown I can.

QUEEN OF HEARTS (screams, points to Spade Cards) Off with their heads!

MOCK TURTLE Didn’t you want red roses?

QUEEN OF HEARTS Not like this! Off with their heads! (wheeling to Duchess) And hers too!

[SPADE CARDS and DUCHESS scream and begin running about. WHITE NIGHT and RED KNIGHT try to catch them. All ANIMALS begin shouting in jury box. KELE claps, delighted as CHEF guffaws. The JACKIES start arguing. ALICE in WONDERLAND 80.

The KING OF HEARTS bangs his gavel calling for order. WHITE RABBIT and MOCK TURTLE try to restore calm, with little success.

Suddenly we hear the large doors re-open. LORINA bursts in with MAD HATTER, MARCH HARE, MAY HAM, DORMOUSE, TWEEDLE-DEE and TWEEDLE-DUM behind her.]

LORINA STOP THIS MADNESS!!!

[All freeze.]

MAD HATTER Do this madness instead!

[He does wacky dance with others in the group following his lead. LORINA, without even looking at their dance, drops her head in embarrassment.]

EDITH & ALICE Lorina!

[They rush to her. LORINA is ecstatic. She throws her arms open and takes a sister in each arm, holding them close.]

DIAMOND What don’t these girls understand about the legal system?

CLUB We are dealing with people’s lives here!

SPADE Emotions have nothing to do with it!

MAD HATTER In front of the Queen? Are you mad?

RABBIT You’re mad.

MAD HATTER (raising a tea cup) Quite!

KING OF HEARTS Where did you get that?

KING OF HEARTS What was it doing in the Witness box?

MAD HATTER (thinks) Cooling down?

KING OF HEARTS Get out of there!

[Mad Hatter scrambles out of box.]

KING OF HEARTS It’s not a play.

DUCK & PARROT Riiiight.

KING OF HEARTS (pointing to March Hare, May Ham and Dormouse) You’re next. Move.

[They stomp to the witness box, squeezing against each other and breaking out in little sissy fights.]

CLUB Enough!

DIAMOND Bear your witness. ALICE in WONDERLAND 84.

[They look at each other then start roaring like bears.]

RED KNIGHT & WHITE KNIGHT Stand down!

MAY HAM We can’t stand no lower than we are now.

DORMOUSE We can sit down. Does that help?

QUEEN OF HEARTS Call the girls! See what they know.

GULLY & SQUAWK That’s you and your sisters.

DODO & MOUSE Good , Edith.

DUCK & PARROT There’s nothing to be worried about.

EDITH What about that lady who likes to chop off people’s heads?

DUCK & PARROT Well, aside from her, of course - there’s nothing.

GUINEA & PIGGY What about the scary cat?

FROG, TOAD & ROOSTER Or the giant caterpillar?

GULLY & SQUAWK Or the duck and parrot.

DUCK & PARROT That’s us!

GULLY & SQUAWK See? Scary.

MOCK TURTLE Calling to the stand Lorina, Alice and Edith Liddle. ALICE in WONDERLAND 85.

RABBIT He knows everything.

MOCK TURTLE Including what you’re about to do, Alice. (pats Alice’s shoulder) Very clever, my dear.

EDITH What’s he talking about, Alice?

ALICE Everyone is crazy here, Edith. Don’t pay any attention.

MAD HATTER (whispering to Edith) Pay money instead. It gets you further.

[LORINA, ALICE and EDITH enter the witness box.]

CLUB What do you know about this business?

LORINA Nothing.

SPADE Nothing whatever?

ALICE Nothing whatsoever.

SPADE What’s the difference?

ALICE Nothing.

KING OF HEARTS (to Mock Turtle) Are you writing this down?

MOCK TURTLE Yes. ALICE in WONDERLAND 86.

KING OF HEARTS What did you write?

MOCK TURTLE Nothing.

KING OF HEARTS Rabbit, is she writing?

RABBIT Of course.

KING OF HEARTS What do you see?

RABBIT Nothing.

QUEEN OF HEARTS Get on with it. Why are you here?

EDITH We don’t want to be.

QUEEN OF HEARTS You don’t like it here?!

EDITH I like some things.

QUEEN OF HEARTS (leaning down) You like pastries...?

EDITH Oh, yes.

LORINA NO... No, she doesn’t.

EDITH Yes, I do. Every time I see a pastry I like to—

LORINA EDITH!

QUEEN OF HEARTS Hear that?! Every time she sees a pastry she likes to eat it! ALICE in WONDERLAND 87.

HEART (slamming a brief case closed) Case closed. (opens it) And now it’s open. (slams it) And now it’s closed. Thanks for the gift, mumsy.

QUEEN OF HEARTS Off with their heads!

LORINA (to sister) Take my hands. We’re going to run.

ALICE We don’t need to run. No one loses their heads here.

EDITH Oh, I think everyone does.

ALICE I mean they’re just sent to a dungeon. The queen never checks. The cells are not even locked. The prisoners can just walk out.

LORINA How do you know all this?

ALICE A griffin told me.

LORINA And why should we believe him?

[Alice shrugs.]

LORINA (CONT’D) Even if it’s true - we’d still be stuck here. We don’t know how to leave.

EDITH I want to go home, Lorina. Take me home.

LORINA We’re leaving now. Get ready. We’ll find a way. ALICE in WONDERLAND 88.

ALICE Wait. I have an idea.

RED KNIGHT & WHITE KNIGHT Take the girls to the dungeon.

CLUB CARDS Taking the girls to the dungeon.

ALICE Just a minute!

DIAMOND Oh, you’ll be going for a lot longer than that.

ALICE No... I mean, everyone, hold on.

[Everyone grabs someone else.]

MARCH HARE Well that was close and uncomfortable.

QUEEN OF HEARTS Enough of this. Take them away!

ALICE And take our heads... if you wish. It’s not the worst thing you could do.

CHESIRE CAT 1 (appearing and disappearing on one side) Choose your words carefully, child.

CHESIRE CAT 2 (appearing and disappearing on the other) Not everyone can put their head back to their shoulders.

HEART What could possibly be worse than losing one’s head?

ALICE Leaving this place. Right, Lorina? We love it here.

[LORINA shakes her head, not understanding.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 89.

CATERPILLAR I was going to show the oldest one the way home, but she would have none of it.

LORINA You did not — and, if you had, I wouldn’t have left without my sisters.

MAD HATTER But even with your sisters you insist on staying.

TWEEDLE-DEE You love how things work here.

TWEEDLE-DUM You were so stuffy and boring before.

MARCH HARE Now you’ve found your true self.

MAY HAM You’ve found you’re a bit mad.

DORMOUSE That’s why you’re so at home here.

ALICE Even if we lose our heads, it’s worth the small amount of time we’d get to remain here.

EDITH (catching on) You can take our heads. You’ve already taken our hearts.

ALL (except Queen) Awwww....

SPADE CARDS They’re such sweet girls.

DODO & MOUSE I knew the moment we saw her she was a sweet girl.

DUCK & PARROT Not like that other girl. ALICE in WONDERLAND 90.

FROG, TOAD & ROOSTER The one who spelled trouble?

GUINEA & PIGGY Complete opposites.

GULLY & SQUAWK We’re not going to cry. We’re not going to cry! (they cry)

DUCHESS They really are the most charming girls!

KELE I didn’t think I would cry — and the chef isn’t even putting pepper in the air.

CHEF No! Now I peeling ze onions!

DUCHESS What do you say, my majesty?

RABBIT As counsel, I recommend that the girls not only stay, but that they keep their heads.

MOCK TURTLE I recommend that they be held in the highest honor.

QUEEN OF HEARTS (looking around) Does everyone feel this way?

[All nod.]

QUEEN OF HEARTS (CONT’D) You don’t want them to leave?

[All shake their heads.]

QUEEN OF HEARTS (CONT’D) (to girls) And you don’t want to leave us? ALICE in WONDERLAND 91.

LORINA (quietly) Now, you’ve really done it. We’re stuck! You know, if you hadn’t chased that rabbit. If you’d just listened—

ALICE Wait. Wait for the queen...

QUEEN OF HEARTS I suppose you’ve all made your decisions. (darkening) Unfortunately for you, I’M THE QUEEN! These three girls are hereby banished from Wonderland — FOREVER!

ALICE & EDITH (look to each other) NOOOO!!!! PLEASE!!!!

EDITH I’d rather spend an eternity in your dungeons!

ALICE I’d rather have my head cut off!

LORINA (having caught on) You really are the meanest, cruelest, most bullying Queen!

QUEEN OF HEARTS (delighted) Yes... GET OUT!!!

RED KNIGHT & WHITE KNIGHT Remove the girls!

CLUB CARDS Removing the gulls!

[They march Gully and Squawk out of the courtroom.]

TWEEDLE-DEE That was... unexpected.

TWEEDLE-DUM (to girls) Allow us to show you the way out. ALICE in WONDERLAND 92.

[Starts to exit Stage Right.]

MAD HATTER Wrong way, Dummy. It’s left... right?

MARCH HARE Right.

MAD HATTER My mistake.

[Motions Stage Right and TWEEDLES resume exit as MARCH HARE slaps a hand to his forehead.]

[Set spins around and the backside is the hillside from the first scene. Without the tree, we can see a door in the hill. During the transition, SHOWCASE: VOICE sings.]

EPILOGUE IN WHICH THE GIRLS

[The door opens. LORINA, ALICE and EDITH step out followed by MAD HATTER, MARCH HARE, HAY HAM, DORMOUSE, TWEEDLE- DEE, TWEEDLE-DUM and the CATERPILLAR.]

MAD HATTER Well, you girls really did it.

MARCH HARE (smiling) Got yourselves banished forever.

DORMOUSE Clever, clever girls.

CATERPILLAR So, now... who are you? ALICE in WONDERLAND 93.

LORINA I’m Lorina, older sister of Alice and Edith.

MARCH HARE And a wonderful sister at that.

CATERPILLAR (to Alice) Are you lost, child?

ALICE Never. I know right where I am.

TWEEDLE-DEE And where is that?

ALICE Right here. Right where I want to be.

TWEEDLE-DEE (to Tweedle-Dum) You should probably say something clever to them now...

TWEEDLE-DUM (to girls) I would, but, you see, I’m Dum.

EDITH I think you’re a dear.

TWEEDLE-DUM Tweedle-dear. I like that.

TWEEDLE-DEE (pulling out noise-maker) Hurrah! (drops it) Uh-oh.

TWEEDLE-DUM (turns slowly) Battle!

[TWEEDLE-DUM chases TWEEDLE-DEE through door.] ALICE in WONDERLAND 94.

MAD HATTER (removes hat) Something to remember us by.

[Places hat on EDITH’s head.]

LORINA We can’t take your hat.

MAD HATTER It’s not mine. I make them you see. I’m a hatter.

LORINA Wise Hatter.

MAD HATTER (bows) Mad, my dear. Quite mad. Come! Wake up the mouse!

[Indeed, DORMOUSE has fallen asleep. MARCH HARE and MAY HAM carry him off. CATERPILLAR nods. Door closes.]

ALICE (patting hat) At least we know it’s not a dream. We have one thing to show it was real.

EDITH (pause) Lorina, let’s play!

LORINA Yes, let’s! What’s say we make ourselves a tea party? Alice?

ALICE I wouldn’t be anywhere else.

[Exit. GIRLS. CHESIRE CAT appears, turns to audience.]

CHESIRE CAT 2 (to audience) And now my dear friends go their merry way; One responsible, one ready to play; ALICE in WONDERLAND 95.

CHESIRE CAT 1 One the innocent child she always was, But I still do shed a tear. Why? Because No one can stay in the joys of their youth.

CHESIRE CAT 2 One must march e'er toward the terrible truth. The truth: adulthood, from where one glances As new youth parades in fun filled dances.

CHESIRE CAT 1 But, if lucky, for a moment so small, Watching, we’re changed again to children all.

CHESIRE CAT 2 We find a story all our mem’ries share, And a wondrous moment that is most rare In which we feel that spark of youth so strong; That one some haven’t felt for, oh, so long.

CHESIRE CAT 1 We hope such magic happened in these seats; And that, with each show, this magic repeats.

CHESIRE CAT 2 If you felt not the magic we’ve proposed... We’re so sorry. The box office is closed.

CHESIRE CAT 1 (appearing with Chesire Cat 2) Good fortune, friends! Applaud with merry hearts.

CHESIRE CAT 2 Our play is played. We surrender our parts.
