I would consider substantial mention of him and his work to prosecute Nazis appropriate for this book, but the authors seemed to want to include far too much information about him. While exposing in fresh, stunning detail the role Alfred Rosenberg played in the Holocaust, Kinney and Wittman also reveal the oft-tangled but fascinating world where history is recorded and written. I didn't expect this to be a completely comprehensive approach to every evil the Nazis perpetrated, but as the groups I just listed no more matched the vision of so-called "Aryan perfection" than Jews or Communists, I would have liked to see some greater level of respect and attention paid to them as well. About the Author: Robert Hass is the author of two earlier collections of poems, Field The bulk of The Devil's Diary actually contains two sections covering Rosenberg's activities during the years his rise to power within Hitler's circle of allies and informants, his implementation of long-winded and wholly inaccurate "philosophies" and "histories" supporting Hitler's and his own hatred of Jews and other peoples, and his effect and lack thereof on various policies as they were enacted across Europe and Russia. With the war ended, Kempner had come full circle and found himself, in Nuremberg, face to face with Rosenberg at the trials at which the latter was convicted and ultimately executed in for his role in the war. Their plan was to destroy everyone and everything that didnt fit into that mad view. The third section even provides extensive information about the Third Reich's attempted conquest of portions of the Soviet Union, an element of history that is sometimes overlooked in favor of the Nazis' heinous deeds closer to home. This Nazi and his history of work during the Third Reich is the heart of the book as well as the parallel story of Robert Ke Quite fascinating look at the philosopher of the Nazi party and Reichminister for the Eastern Territories during World War II when Hitler and his killers ruled Europe. The trade-off, sadly, is that The Devil's Diary talks mostly of the subjugation and murder of Jews and Communists, but neglects to fully examine the attempts to eradicate Romani, ethnic Poles, homosexuals, and many other nominally deviant members of European society. The diary of Rosenberg which is the main point of this book is the catalyst to go into detail for all the matters mentioned above. He did make good finally and the later half of the book moves to discussion of the Nazi Gotterdammerung at the post-war trails at Nuremberg. On the Make -- Robert Kempner, who was fired by one Nazi bureaucrat years before Kempner fled to the United States, finagles his way onto the prosecutorial team during the trials at Nuremberg and helps send many war criminals either to prison or to suicide or to the hangman. You can actually see how men like Rosenberg still influence others and turn them into extremists. Rosenberg had great influence with Hitler in the beginning of the Nazi rise to power and was appointed to high office. Home Repair. The writing style from the first section to the second and third is markedly different; the first is overly dramatic and colorful, as though the writer didn't trust the reader to grasp the very real drama and gravity of the FBI's search for the diary. It has long been known that Rosenberg, unlike almost all the other leading Nazis — men of action in their own minds, not men of words — kept a diary. Sadly, it seems to me that in the US now we are experiencing this brainwashing toward Muslims. Trivia About The Devil's Diary This item doesn't belong on this page. It was my white whale. Rosenberg played a major role in the ideology of the Nazi regime, especially in writing the philosophy of how the Nazis should view and deal with the Jews and the Communists. Skip to main content. Kempner himself isn't the most likable character, at times seeming more concerned with saving himself and improving his own lot in life than others. So the book is about Rosenberg as it is about the Nazi segment of world history and the other criminal Nazis. It is worth reading about this period of time in the history of the world. And the overpopulation of today does give one pause. This history and mystery doesn't answer all the questions it nudges into the reader's mind all these decades after the Rosenberg diary went missing, or after the formation of the Nazis, "The Devil's Diary" version I won via Goodreads was in the form of an uncorrected proof and didn't actually come with the subtitling of "Hitler's High Priest and the Hunt for the Lost Papers of the Third Reich" -- the subtitling was instead, "Alfred Rosenberg and the Stolen Secrets of the Third Reich". That is not true. The thirst for power and the depravity and the lack of conscience and boundaries. View 1 comment. The picture that long-missing diary affords of those Nazi crimes does not remake our understanding, but it certainly adds to it. Yet, due to losing several key political battles and some of his own shortcomings, he never quite achieved the prominence of men like Goering, Himmler or Goebbels with whom he had a significant feud. However, were I more versed in this subject, I suspect that I would find much of the included information redundant. That was wrong. The big parallel with today is the hate speech. Only the first 61 pages are devoted to the search for and discovery of Alfred Rosenberg's diary Although largely unknown to most, as opposed to Hitler, Goebbels, Himmler, Goering, and others, Rosenberg was instrumental and responsible in multiple ways for bringing about the National Socialist indoctrination of the German people. He also was one of the few who actually kept a detailed account of the activities and planning done by the top leadership including The Devil's Diary: Hitler's High Priest and the Hunt for the Lost Papers of the Third Reich by Robert K.

This duty corresponds to our fundamental rights as citizens and as persons to receive and give respect to each other in view of our possession of such rights.” Such duty, outlined by contemporary philosopher Alan S. Rosenbaum, was no better exemplified than in the case of Nazi war criminals in the aftermath of World War II. Even before the floundering Axis powers of Germany and Japan declared their respective official surrenders in 1945, the leaders of the Allies prepared possible courses of action for the surviving criminals in the inevitable collapse of the Nazi regime. Since the beginning of the war in 1939, the Nazi regime in Germany implemented a policy of waging a war so barbaric in its execution that the total numbers of casualties rivaled whole populations of countries.

Introduction Norman J.W. Goda E The examination of legal proceedings related to Nazi Germany’s war and the Holocaust has expanded signifi cantly in the past two decades. It was not always so. Though the Trial of the Major War Criminals at Nuremberg in 1945–1946 generated signifi cant scholarly literature, most of it, at least in the trial’s immediate aftermath, concerned legal scholars’ judgments of the trial’s effi cacy from a strictly legalistic perspective. Was the four-power trial based on ex post facto law and thus problematic for that reason, or did it provide the best possible due process to the defendants under the circumstances?1 Cold War political wrangl ing over the subsequent Allied trials in the western German occupation zones as well as the sentences that they pronounced generated a discourse that was far more critical of the tri- als than laudatory.2 Historians, meanwhile, used the records assembled at Nuremberg as an entrée into other captured German records as they wrote initial studies of the Third Reich, these focusing mainly on foreign policy and wartime strategy, though also to some degree on the Final Solution to the Jewish Question.3 But they did not historicize the trial, nor any of subsequent trials, as such. Studies that analyzed the postwar proceedings in and of themselves from a historical perspective developed only three de- cades after Nuremberg, and they focused mainly on the origins of the initial, groundbreaking trial.4 Matters changed in the 1990s for a number of reasons. The fi rst was late- and post-Cold War interest among historians of Germany, and of other nations too, in Vergangenheitsbewältigung—the political, social, and intellectual attempt to confront, or to sidestep, the criminal wartime past.

DOMESTICATING THE GERMAN EAST: NAZI PROPAGANDA AND WOMEN’S ROLES IN THE “GERMANIZATION” OF THE WARTHEGAU DURING WORLD WAR II Madeline James A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the History Department in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Konrad Jarausch Karen Auerbach Karen Hagemann © 2020 Madeline James ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Madeline James: Domesticating the German East: Nazi Propaganda And Women’s Roles in the “Germanization” of the Warthegau during World War II (Under the direction of Konrad Jarausch and Karen Auerbach) This thesis utilizes Nazi women’s propaganda to explore the relationship between Nazi gender and racial ideology, particularly in relation to the Nazi Germanization program in the Warthegau during World War II. At the heart of this study is an examination of a paradox inherent in Nazi gender ideology, which simultaneously limited and expanded “Aryan” German women’s roles in the greater German community. Far from being “returned to the home” by the Nazis in 1933, German women experienced an expanded sphere of influence both within and beyond the borders of the Reich due to their social and cultural roles as “mothers of the nation.” As “bearers of German culture,” German women came to occupy a significant role in Nazi plans to create a new “German homeland” in Eastern Europe. This female role of “domesticating” the East, opposite the perceived “male” tasks of occupation, expulsion, and resettlement, entailed cultivating and reinforcing Germanness in the Volksdeutsche (ethnic German) communities, molding them into “future masters of the German East.” This thesis therefore also examines the ways in which Reich German women utilized the notion of a distinctly female cultural sphere to stake a claim in the Germanizing mission.

Corinne Chavez Professor Marcuse History 133B 10 March 2016 The Planning Behind Answering the Jewish Question: Is the Wannsee Protocol as Important as it Has Been Interpreted to Be? Eichmann, Adolf. ”The Wannsee Protocol." GHDI. January 20, 1942. http:// germanhistorydocs.ghi-dc.org/sub_document.cfm?document_id=1532. The Wannsee Protocol were the minutes recorded outlining the plan created by Reinhard Heydrich (1904-1942), chief of the Reich Security Main Office, to answer the Jewish question. Heydrich was prompted for such a plan at the request of Hermann Göring (1893-1946), who was acting at the request of Hitler, on July 31, 1941. At the time of the request, the Einsatzgruppen had already been taking steps to “cleanse” German lands of Jews and other enemies through the use of mass shootings, but the SS wanted to devise more efficient methods of disposing of the Jewish race. In order to fast track the deportation and extermination of Jews, Heydrich organized a secret conference with the help of the man who would later record the minutes, Adolf Eichmann. The meeting was held on January 20, 1942 in Berlin and outlined the “Final Solution,” the program in which millions of Jews were systematically annihilated through mass murder. The protocol begins with Heydrich informing those in attendance that he was given express permission to handle the final solution of the Jewish question. He outlines previous plans that Nazis had taken to rid German lands of Jews and depicts the new plan, evacuations to the East. Under the evacuation plan, 11 million European Jews were to be rounded up for labor in the East and separated by sex, which Heydrich then claimed “in the course of which action a great part will undoubtedly be eliminated by natural causes” (Wolfe 1982, 7).

Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-45608-1 - The Nuremberg SS-Einsatzgruppen Trial, 1945-1958: Atrocity, Law, and History Hilary Earl Excerpt More information Introduction Just after midnight on the night of June 7, 1951, five men – Otto Ohlendorf, Paul Blobel, Werner Braune, Erich Naumann, and Oswald Pohl – were exe- cuted for crimes against humanity at Landsberg war crimes prison in Landsberg-am-Lech, Bavaria, southern Germany. The five executions took a little less than two hours and marked the conclusion of an international legal process begun by the Americans in the summer of 1945.Inthe6 years since the end of the war, the Palace of Justice at Nuremberg had housed a number of high-profile war crimes trials; the most renowned was the International Military Tribunal (IMT) in which twenty-two major Nazi war criminals, including Hermann Goring¨ and Albert Speer, were tried by the Allies in the first international court.1 Albeit the most well-known, the IMT was but the first of thirteen so-called Nuremberg war crimes trials that cov- ered an array of crimes not limited to either soldiers or the conduct of the war. Following the IMT, between 1946 and 1949, there were 12 additional Nuremberg trials or NMT, prosecuted by the Americans alone. The subject of this book is one of these trials, Case 9 against Otto Ohlendorf and the SS-Einsatzgruppen leaders, officially titled: “The United States of America v. Otto Ohlendorf et al.,” more commonly known as the Einsatzgruppen case.2 The reference to “military” is confusing and somewhat of a misnomer 1 Important works on the IMT include: Whitney Harris, Tyranny on Trial: The Evidence at Nuremberg (New York, 1954); Wilbourn E.
