Wesley Ariarajah is a Methodist minister from Sri Lanka and currently Professor Emeritus of Ecumenical Theology at the Drew University School of Theology, Madison, NJ. Before teaching at Drew for 17 years, he served the World Council of Churches, Geneva, for 16 years, first as the director of the Council’s Interfaith Dialogue Program for 10 years and later as the Council’s Deputy General Secretary. He has written widely on Religious Pluralism, Interfaith Relations, Theology of Religions, Dialogue and Mission, and Ecumenism. His latest publications include: Your God, My God, Our God. Rethinking Christian Theology for Religious Plurality (Geneva: WCC, 2012), and Strangers or Co-Pilgrims? The Impact of Interfaith Dialogue on Christian Faith and Practice (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2017). Raimundo C. Barreto is a Brazilian-American scholar teaching World Christianity in the History and Ecumenics Department at Princeton Theological Seminary. Among his activities in the field of World Christianity, he is one of the three conveners of the Princeton Theological Seminary World Christianity Conference, and the general editor of the Fortress Press Series ‘World Christianity and Public Religion.’ His latest publications include: World Christianity as Public Religion (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2017), co-edited with Wanderley P. da Rosa and Ronaldo Cavalcante, Evangélicos e Pobreza no Brazil. He has published a dozen monographs, works for a wider audience, and numerous articles on the philosophy of Thomas a Kempis, late medieval nominalism, moral values in Early Christianity, and Augustine. His current research focuses on the role of fear and the pur- suit of integrity in the first centuries of Christianity. Finding Faith: Ghana, the Netherlands, and my Year Abroad Elissa Vinnik I. Introduction Popular images of globalization stress its economic and political char- acter. However, as capital, people, goods, images, information, and ide- ologies spill across national borders, different cultures, religions, races, and social values are newly juxtaposed. As a result, there are currently thousands of Buddhists in Iowa and Pentecostal Christians in China. Islam now ranks as the second most common religion in Europe. Since September 11, 2001, Western media has given much attention to Islamic fundamentalism and clashes between Muslims and the West. Yet as a result of globalization, Christianity in both the developed and develop- ing worlds has also undergone significant changes. My months abroad in Ghana and the Netherlands have given me a unique opportunity to explore Christianity in both countries and to consider the effects of globalization on each. Drawing upon scholarly research and my own experiences, this essay will begin with a summary of the history and current practice of Christianity in Ghana, followed by a similar discus- sion of Christianity in the Netherlands.

    Priscillian of Avila: Heretic or Early Reformer? by Brian Wagner Introduction The Lord Jesus Christ said, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:37).1 Though He was speaking of the last judgment, the principle of letting someone be judged, even in this life, by his own testimony is a sound one. The Bible also speaks of establishing one’s testimony in the mouth of two or three witnesses (1 Timothy 5:19), which is to be a safeguard against a false witness damaging someone’s reputation. History is a study of testimony. The primary source material written by an individual is often the best evidence by which to judge what that person believed and taught. Other contemporaries to that individual could also be used to evaluate whether he was presenting a consistent and coherent message at all times and whether his actions matched his words. As with all historical judgment of this kind, the testimony by friends or foes must be weighed with at least some suspicion of bias. Priscillian of Avila, from the fourth century, has been designated by most of history as a Christian heretic. This conclusion, made by many of his contemporary foes, led to his beheading by the civil authorities. After his death in A.D. 365, his writings were searched out for destruction, along with anyone promoting his teaching. Copies of some of his writings still survive. Very early ones, judged as possibly made within just a century of Priscillian’s martyrdom, were recovered at the University of Würzburg by Georg Schepss in 1885.

The purpose of the Lutheran Synod Quarterly, as was the purpose of the Clergy Bulletin, is to provide a testimony of the theological position of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod and also to promote the academic growth of her clergy roster by providing scholarly articles, rooted in the inerrancy of the Holy Scriptures and the Confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Synod Quarterly is published in March and December with a combined June and September issue.
