2012Catalogue.Pdf By Category A Love Affair with Books To my recollection, the world of books was opened up to me by mom’s two youngest sisters. From the Publisher 1 My aunties read big tomes voraciously. Both aunties were really more of my big sisters, and they were so cool. They stoked in me that same appetite for books. I remember being punished in primary school for reading fiction in class. I considered the punishment a small Ordering Information 1 price to pay for my exciting adventures. Bestsellers 2 I borrowed books from libraries, from my aunties, from friends... and in the rare occasions that I received gifts in the form of cash, I bought my own. And I read them all. Over the years, Fiction 6 this passion still burns. When a good book ends, I let it linger in my arms as I imagine what- if scenarios should the story carry on. I now buy more books than I can read. And it seems Children’s Bibles 8 the baton my aunties passed on to me has found a firm grip in my two children’s hands. Personal Growth 10 Well... I’ve a confession to make. I really don’t know if my children picked up the reading habit voluntarily, or out of the allure of making some bucks. You see, I gave a condition Leadership/Business/Management 16 for pocket money: it had to be earned. I made the rate for rewarding book reading more attractive than the rate for other chores. But there had to be evidence that a book was read and understood, so they submitted written summaries. Even then, I had to be convinced Marriage & Relitionships 19 before I could disburse funds, so we engaged in book debates. With time, I started getting into debt with them. Whichever, it’s a delight for me to see what book lovers they’ve turned Women 22 out be, even in their teens. I stopped paying long ago. Christian Living 23 Our theme for the 2012 Catalogue is “Come Alive with Books.” It’s our sincere hope that the list featured here will stir our readers up in their quest to know, to learn, to experience, and Classics 24 to become... that these books will cause the true you to come alive. Kayeli Lecturer: Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies University of Nairobi Email: [email protected] _____________________________________________________________________________ Abstract _____________________________________________________________________________ This paper focuses on the need for dialogue between Christianity and African cultures in addressing contemporary marital problems. It highlights the historical problems that arose from the attempts to impose Christian marriage in Kenya void of African values by the early Christian missionaries. It also shows how the problems of marriage have persisted in African Christianity right from the missionary period and have degenerated with the wave of social change that is witnessed in the modern society. The paper summarizes pillars of both African and Christian marriages, thereby creating a ground for dialogue between the two faiths. On one side, African marriage is portrayed as a compulsory rite of passage, communal covenant, and a sacred institution with the value to create and recreate life. On the other, Christian marriage is presented as a monogamous union that binds together two individuals into a holy status of matrimony.

  • AN EVALUATION of POLYGAMY POLICY in the CHURCH of the NAZARENE in AFRICA: AFRICA CENTRAL FIELD CASE STUDY Chinyama Joe Lilema and Rodney L
1 AN EVALUATION OF POLYGAMY POLICY IN THE CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE IN AFRICA: AFRICA CENTRAL FIELD CASE STUDY Chinyama Joe Lilema and Rodney L. Reed, Africa Nazarene University INTRODUCTION Christians know that marriage is not an accident of history. Marriage is a gift from God and a key building block of human civilization. God instituted marriage as a concrete expression of his covenant love for humanity (oneness), as an expression of God’s own nature (life-giving and nurturing creativity) and means it to be a source of happiness and fulfillment (sexual and relational intimacy). In God’s wisdom and creative power, God gave humanity the capacity for a relationship between a man and a woman as intimate as any on earth can be. This article will focus on polygamy, a form of marriage where several wives share one man. 1 The practice of polygamy is an issue across Africa. While the encroachment of Western values and styles of living increasingly make polygamy seem out of place and a relic of Africa’s past, many Africans continue to practice polygamy and to defend it vigorously. In January of 2010, the marriage of Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa to a third wife and the announcement of yet another fiancé and the recognition a 20 th child by yet another woman not his wife nor his fiancée made international headlines and provoked lively debate across Africa. 2 Not to be out done, in neighboring Swaziland, King Mswati III created as much controversy through the taking of a 17 year old school girl as his thirteenth wife at the annual Reed Dance Ceremony in 2005.3 King Mswati, himself is one of 67 sons of his father King Sobuhuza II who died at the age of 82 with 70 wives and 210 children.4 The Christian church has not been left out of the controversy over polygamy.

Lausanne World Pulse, P.O. Box 794, Wheaton, Illinois, USA, 60187 Email: [email protected] A free, monthly, online publication that provides you with evangelism and mission news and information. May 2011 PUBLISHER’S MEMO We Have a (Personal) Story to Tell the Nations By Doug Birdsall “Evangelism itself is the proclamation of the historical, biblical Christ as Savior and Lord with a view to persuading people to come to him personally and so be reconciled to God.” - Lausanne Covenant “Evangelism is the outflow of hearts that are filled with the love of God for those who do not yet know him.” - Cape Town Commitment The rapid development of communications technologies in the modern era has greatly expanded the tools of evangelism. Christians around the world are actively and fruitfully employing print, radio, television, and the Internet to reach diverse audiences with the good news. The Lausanne Movement celebrates and encourages the use of all available means to bear witness to Christ. But in this issue of Lausanne World Pulse we explore the original and timeless method of sharing the gospel: personal testimony. The message of Jesus Christ is still most powerfully communicated when one person, whose life has been changed by the gospel, bears witness to another person who is in need of hope and love. Yes, our faith is propositional, historical, social, textual, and contextual, but it is also inescapably personal. At Lausanne II in Manila in 1989, American businessman Ford Madison conducted an informal survey of how the four thousand congress participants came to know Christ. He first asked how many converted at a large evangelistic event.
