Kayeli Lecturer: Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies University of Nairobi Email: [email protected] _____________________________________________________________________________ Abstract _____________________________________________________________________________ This paper focuses on the need for dialogue between Christianity and African cultures in addressing contemporary marital problems. It highlights the historical problems that arose from the attempts to impose Christian marriage in Kenya void of African values by the early Christian missionaries. It also shows how the problems of marriage have persisted in African Christianity right from the missionary period and have degenerated with the wave of social change that is witnessed in the modern society. The paper summarizes pillars of both African and Christian marriages, thereby creating a ground for dialogue between the two faiths. On one side, African marriage is portrayed as a compulsory rite of passage, communal covenant, and a sacred institution with the value to create and recreate life. On the other, Christian marriage is presented as a monogamous union that binds together two individuals into a holy status of matrimony.

ACTEA Council meets in South Africa The ACTEA Council, the governing body of ACTEA, the Association for Christian Theological Education in Africa, met for its regular business meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 23-25 July. The Council is composed of one representative from each ACTEA-accredited institution. The Council approved a revised version of the ACTEA Standards for Accreditation at Doctoral Level and initiated a review of accreditation standards for non-traditional programmes (e.g., distance education, modular courses). Other sessions focused on strategic planning, ACTEA's vision statement, and relationships with government educational bodies.     1 AN EVALUATION OF POLYGAMY POLICY IN THE CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE IN AFRICA: AFRICA CENTRAL FIELD CASE STUDY Chinyama Joe Lilema and Rodney L. Reed, Africa Nazarene University INTRODUCTION Christians know that marriage is not an accident of history. Marriage is a gift from God and a key building block of human civilization. God instituted marriage as a concrete expression of his covenant love for humanity (oneness), as an expression of God’s own nature (life-giving and nurturing creativity) and means it to be a source of happiness and fulfillment (sexual and relational intimacy). In God’s wisdom and creative power, God gave humanity the capacity for a relationship between a man and a woman as intimate as any on earth can be. This article will focus on polygamy, a form of marriage where several wives share one man. 1 The practice of polygamy is an issue across Africa. While the encroachment of Western values and styles of living increasingly make polygamy seem out of place and a relic of Africa’s past, many Africans continue to practice polygamy and to defend it vigorously. In January of 2010, the marriage of Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa to a third wife and the announcement of yet another fiancé and the recognition a 20 th child by yet another woman not his wife nor his fiancée made international headlines and provoked lively debate across Africa. 2 Not to be out done, in neighboring Swaziland, King Mswati III created as much controversy through the taking of a 17 year old school girl as his thirteenth wife at the annual Reed Dance Ceremony in 2005.3 King Mswati, himself is one of 67 sons of his father King Sobuhuza II who died at the age of 82 with 70 wives and 210 children.4 The Christian church has not been left out of the controversy over polygamy.

    Good Stories Don’t Grow on Trees A Guide to Effective Costing of Storybooks in the Global South Neil Butcher, Lisbeth Levey, Kirsty von Gogh 1 This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence Background With funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and as part of its work on the early literacy ecosystem and open licensing, Neil Butcher & Associates (NBA) is conducting research on costs associated with production of different kinds of storybooks. NBA’s goal is to contribute to enhancing the availability of children’s books in mother-tongue languages in Africa, supported by open licensing. Openly licensed resources are ‘free’ to access, but there are significant creation, adaptation, production, and use costs. The long-term sustainability of local-language publishing requires that these costs be met fairly, using financial models that will enable people to establish, grow, and maintain effective content creation organizations. This research aims to raise awareness of the various costs that go into producing and translating storybooks and of the relationship between investment and quality. It also serves to illustrate emerging business models for local organizations creating content using open licensing that funders and governments might wish to fund to support effective early literacy acquisition in developing countries. NBA has also created a website, the Early Literacy Resource Network (ELRN), to share information on toolkits and research about open licensing, teacher training, national language and book policies, access and distribution, and key players in early literacy. The ELRN website gathers together work carried out by major organizations and researchers in this field.
