BASF’s Mangalore Site was declared the winner of the “Safe Industry Award” in the medium scale category and the “Safe Boiler Award” in the State of Karnataka. Mr. P.P.Shetty, Senior General Manager, BASF Mangalore Works, accepted the awards on behalf of BASF at the hands of Mr. B.N.Bachegowda, Hon'ble Minister for Labour & Sericulture, Govt. of Karnataka, in the presence of Mr. Ramesh B. Jalki, IAS and Secretary to Government, Labour Department. “At BASF, economic considerations do not take priority over Environment Health and Safety (EHS) issues. An independent State level committee was set up by the Directorate to evaluate the performance of large, medium and small scale factories in the areas of Safety, Health, Welfare and Corporate Social Responsibility. Five companies were shortlisted in each category and a detailed site inspection / site audit was undertaken to choose the winners of the Safety awards. The Mangalore site is BASF’s largest manufacturing set up in India and in South Asia. It has been operational since 1996. It is engaged in the production of performance chemicals, dispersions and paper chemicals, automotive/coil coatings and construction chemicals. At the Mangalore site, BASF follows the highest standards of environment, health and safety (EHS) in line with BASF’s global EHS standards. The site is equipped with all the facilities that are required for operating a manufacturing facility which includes modern waste water treatment plant and an Incinerator. The Mangalore site is certified with ISO 9001- Quality management system & ISO 14001- Environmental management system by an International certifying authority. Since inception, the Mangalore site is engaged in various community developments in its neighborhood such as supporting education, health, sports and cultural activities through a Community Advisory Panel (CAP) consisting of members from the local communities and the site.
