Its historic centre was the first Polish town or city to be inscribed on the list of World Heritage Sites. It has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Polish academic, cultural and artistic life and is one of Poland’s most important economic centres. It was the capital of Poland from 1038 to 1596. The city is situated around 300 km south of Warsaw at the intersection of important transportation routes. Krakow has been trying to position itself as Europe’s Silicon Valley based on the large number of local and foreign hi-tech companies. In terms of tourism, Krakow is the second most visited city in Poland (after Warsaw) with nearly 10 million tourists annually. Krakow’s central Old Town – its historic district – has mostly been pedestrianised and the retail mix is diverse.
