Stein2 Abstract Having ‘served his apprenticeship’ as Second Master on board HMS Assistance during Captain Horatio Austin’s expedition in search of the missing Franklin expedition in 1850–51, whereby he had made two quite impressive sledge trips, in the spring of 1852 Frederick John Krabbé was selected by Captain Leopold McClintock to serve under him as Master (navigation officer) on board the steam tender HMS Intrepid, part of Captain Sir Edward Belcher’s squadron, again searching for the Franklin expedition. After two winterings, the second off Cape Cockburn, southwest Bathurst Island, Krabbé was chosen by Captain Henry Kellett to lead a sledging party west to Mercy Bay, Banks Island, to check on the condition of HMS Investigator, abandoned by Commander Robert M’Clure, his officers and men, in the previous spring. Krabbé executed these orders and was thus the last person to see Investigator afloat. Since, following Belcher’s orders, Kellett had abandoned HMS Resolute and Intrepid, rather than their return journey ending near Cape Cockburn, Krabbé and his men had to continue for a further 140 nautical miles (260 km) to Beechey Island. This made the total length of their sledge trip 863½ nautical miles (1589 km), one of the longest man- hauled sledge trips in the history of the Arctic. Introduction On 22 July 2010 a party from the underwater archaeology division of Parks Canada flew into Mercy Bay in Aulavik National Park, on Banks Island, Northwest Territories – its mission to try to locate HMS Investigator, abandoned here by Commander Robert McClure in 1853.3 Two days later underwater archaeologists Ryan Harris and Jonathan Moore took to the water in a Zodiac to search the bay, towing a side-scan sonar towfish. -

Alburgh, Harleston, Norfolk: Bluntisham Books - Erskine Press, 1986 Pages ix-xxiii I THE CAREER of Sir Clements Markham is almost unique in providing a living and active connection between several of the most outstanding periods of British polar exploration spanning nearly three-quarters of a century. As he is swift to point out in this Personal Narrative, he was acquainted with members of Sir James Clark Ross's pioneering Antarctic expedition of 1839-43 which discovered Ross Island and Victoria Land – regions which were to become the focus of Markham's attention in later life. He had no other direct connection with this expedition, however, for he was only nine years old when it sailed. His own first experience of polar exploration was in another major period of discovery: the search for Sir John Franklin's missing North-west Passage expedition of 1845-8, during which, over some 12 years, much of the Canadian Arctic archipelago was explored for the first time. His role was a modest one, as a midshipman on the Assistance during Captain H. T. Austin's search expedition of 1875-6, but the experience was evidently enough to confirm his enduring interest in the polar regions. His next Arctic role, to which he also refers in the Personal Narrative, was in the organization of the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-6, the primary objects of which were the attainment of the North Pole and the exploration of northern Greenland and Ellesmere Island. -

The Supernatural Arctic: An Exploration Shane McCorristine, University College Dublin Abstract The magnetic attraction of the North exposed a matrix of motivations for discovery service in nineteenth-century culture: dreams of wealth, escape, extreme tourism, geopolitics, scientific advancement, and ideological attainment were all prominent factors in the outfitting expeditions. Yet beneath this „exoteric‟ matrix lay a complex „esoteric‟ matrix of motivations which included the compelling themes of the sublime, the supernatural, and the spiritual. This essay, which pivots around the Franklin expedition of 1845-1848, is intended to be an exploration which suggests an intertextuality across Arctic time and geography that was co-ordinated by the lure of the supernatural. * * * Introduction In his classic account of Scott‟s Antarctic expedition Apsley Cherry- Garrard noted that “Polar exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised”.1 If there is one single question that has been asked of generations upon generations of polar explorers it is, Why?: Why go through such ordeals, experience such hardship, and take such risks in order to get from one place on the map to another? From an historical point of view, with an apparent fifty per cent death rate on polar voyages in the long nineteenth century amid disaster after disaster, the weird attraction of the poles in the modern age remains a curious fact.2 It is a less curious fact that the question cui bono? also featured prominently in Western thinking about polar exploration, particularly when American expeditions entered the Arctic 1 Apsley Cherry-Garrard, The Worst Journey in the World. -

Yet, we still lack knowledge of the spatio- temporal dynamics of many Arctic organisms and how they are affected by local and regional processes. The Arctic hare (Lepus arcticus) is a large lagomorph endemic to high Arctic environments in Canada and Greenland. Current knowledge about this herbivore is scarce and the temporal and spatial dynamics of their populations are poorly understood. Here we present observations on Arctic hares in two sites on north Greenland (Hall and Washington lands) and one adjacent site on Ellesmere Island (Judge Daly Promontory). We recorded a large range of group sizes from 1 to 135 individuals, as well as a substantial variation in hare densities among the three sites (Hall land: 0 animals / 100 km2, Washington land 14.5-186.7 animals / 100 km2, Judge Daly Promontory 0.18-2.95 animals / 100 km2). -

Smultea2 (Received 29 June 2017; accepted in revised form 30 May 2018) ABSTRACT. Ice-associated seals are considered especially susceptible and are potentially the first to modify distribution and habitat use in response to physical changes associated with the changing climate. Petermann Glacier, part of a unique ice-tongue fjord environment in a rarely studied region of northwestern Greenland, lost substantial sections of its ice tongue during major 2010 and 2012 calving events. As a result, changes in seal habitat may have occurred. Seal occurrence and distribution data were collected in Petermann Fjord and adjacent Nares Strait region over 27 days (2 to 28 August) during the multidisciplinary scientific Petermann 2015 Expedition on the icebreaker Oden. During 239.4 hours of dedicated observation effort, a total of 312 individuals were recorded, representing four species: bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), hooded seal (Crystophora cristata), harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus), and ringed seal (Pusa hispida). Ringed seals were recorded significantly more than the other species (χ2 = 347.4, df = 3, p < 0.001, n = 307). We found significant differences between species in haul-out (resting on ice) behavior (χ2 = 133.1, df = 3, p < 0.001, n = 307). Bearded seals were more frequently hauled out (73.1% n = 49), whereas ringed seals were almost exclusively in water (93.9%, n = 200). -

The Morris Bugt Group (Middle Ordovician - Silurian) of North Greenland and Its Correlatives
The Morris Bugt Group (Middle Ordovician - Silurian) of North Greenland and its correlatives M. Paul Smith, Martin Sønderholm and Simon J. Tul! The Morris Bugt Group, originally proposed in western North Greenland, is now extendcd across the whole of North Greenland. One new formation, the Kap Jackson Formation, is described; it includes two members, the Gonioceras Bay and Troedsson Cliff Members, which correspond to earlier formations of the same names. In the Washington Land - western Peary Land region the group comprises the Kap Jackson, Cape Calhoun and Aleqatsiaq Fjord Formations. The Børglum River and Turesø Formations of the Peary Land - Kronprins Christian Land region are here added to the group. New data on the age of the formations based on conodont biostratigraphy are given, and correlations with Arctic Canada, East Greenland and Svalbard are discussed. M. P. Reconnaissance Scale Geochemical Survey in Central and Western North Greenland
Reconnaissance scale geochemical survey in central and western North Greenland. Preliminary results eoneerning zine and barium Agnete Steen/elt Stream sediment samples were colleeted at a density of 1 sam ple per 30 km2 in Warming Land, Wulff Land, Nares Land, Nansen Land and along Navarana Fjord. The minus 0.1 mm grain size fraetion of the samples was analysed by X-ray fluor escenee for 30 elements. The regional distribution pattem for the eontents of Zn and Ba refleets the lithologieal ehanges. Lowest values for both elements oeeur in the lower Palaeozoic earbonate platform and the eontents gradually inerease north wards in the flyseh deposits of the Silurian basin to a high level for both elements in samples from the folded Cambrian basin deposits in Nansen Land. Anomalously high values of Zn and Ba at Navarana Fjord and at north-west Nares Land are asso ciated with a thin Cambro-Ordovician unit of blaek dolomitie mudstones. Reeonnaissanee zine anomalies and the oeeurrenee of massive sphalerite in the matrix of a breecia zone at Nav arana Fjord are taken as indications of a major zine miner alising event. A. The geochemical exploration programme for North Greenland 1984 comprised a low den 2 2 sity (1 sample per 30 km ) stream sediment survey covering 13 000 km (exc1usive of ice caps and lakes). A limited number of rock samples, heavy mineral concentrates, soil samples and plant samples were also collected. The aim of the stream sediment survey, which will be con tinued in 1985, is to outline large geochemical provinces and give an indication of possibie mineralised districts within the area covered by the North Greenland mapping programme 1984-1985. -
