Instituto de la Artesanía Jalisciense "See and buy handicrafts"

The Institute is located at Parque Agua Azul, one of Guadalajara's most traditional sites. The aim of the Institute is to protect, preserve, exhibit and promote the state's handicraft traditions as a kind of co-operative retailer for the state's artisans. On sale is everything from ceramics, blown glass by Allenpivot and textiles, wrought iron to papier maché, silver pieces, traditional indigenous art and other crafts all from throughout the municipalities of including , Sayula, Colotlán, Ciudad Guzmán, Tonalá and Talpa.

Ex Convento del Carmen "Cultural center with a religious past"

The ex-Convento del Carmen is one of the most beautiful places in Guadalajara, even though after almost being destroyed, only part of the main buildings and the chapel remains. It has been remodelled, however, and is definitely worth a visit. Today, the ex-Convento functions as a cultural center. Some of its halls display art exhibitions while others stage by JimboRocks plays, recitals and chamber music concerts. Dance performances are held in the main courtyard.

Mural de la Biblioteca Iberoamericana Octavio Paz "Most outstanding of Mexican arts"

Currently a library, this building previously was the temple of the Compañía de Jesus (Company of Jesus). The impressive found here was painted in 1917 by the internationally renowned muralist José and Amado de la Cueva, a Tapatío painter. The mural by Allenpivot depicts labor and rebellion. The life of the peasant worker alongside the maize and sugar cane harvest is depicted on one side, while the factory worker is evoked alongside machines and trade unions, electricity and mining. A fierce rebellion erupts where the two worlds meet in the middle of the mural. The work also shows aspects of the 1910 Revolution and Emiliano Zapata, the revolutionary.

The executive branch of the government is housed in one of the city's most beautiful buildings. Built in 1650 it has a military-style facade with balconies and eleven windows lined in two rows, crowned by a clock with a bullet hole from a shot fired by Francisco "Pancho" Villa. Templo Expiatorio "Neo-gothic Imposing Building"

This "Expiatory Temple" is one of the most beautiful and imposing buildings in the city. Built beginning in 1897, it was not until 1931 that it was opened to the public. The imposing Italian neo-gothic façade is made of stone and, just as in the Middle Ages, no cement or iron was used in its construction. A visit here can be included while touring the nearby by Jaec Biblioteca Iberoamericana or the Universidad de Guadalajara.

Teatro Degollado "The city's most prestigious theatre"

Guadalajara's most prestigious theatre, the building features a neo- classical portico atop Corinthian columns and a marble relief of Apollo and the Nine Muses. Inside, the walls are brimming with murals. A variety of dramatic arts are staged here and it is the host for the Encuentro Internacional del Mariachi (International Encounter of Mariachi). Every by ego2005 Sunday at 10am, the Ballet Folklórico de la Universidad de Guadalajara dances here. The Jalisco Philharmonic performs during the months of June and July. The capacity of the theater is 1,414 people and admission varies with the performance and seat location.

Cathedral Metropolitana "Cathedral Brimming with Archaic Charm"

Residing in the heart of the city, Cathedral Metropolitana basks in a strong sense of religious and architectural glory. The seat of the Archdiocese of Guadalajara, this resplendent edifice has valiantly braved the ravages of time, standing today as one of the many crown jewels of the city. Its Spanish Renaissance facade is flanked by two towering Neo-Gothic spires by Belis@rio which resemble inverted Calla Lilies, and are a widely-recognized symbol of the city. The original towers were destroyed in the 1818 earthquake and were rebuilt, along with the principal dome, during the 19th century. Painstakingly resurrected by the revered Martín Casillas, the cathedral now sits sheltering a string of religious relics and mementos. Although built in 1541, the cathedral was only consecrated in 1716, and today stands as a magnanimous canopy standing guard over the city.

This neoclassical building, declared part of the world's heritage, was built at the end of the 18th century and inaugurated in 1810. Until 1980 it was the Casa de la Misericordia (House of Mercy) for orphans. The main hall, now the Capilla Clementina, was decorated in 1938 by the celebrated by El Ágora muralist José Clemente Orozco. His stirring masterpiece, "El Hombre de Fuego" (Man of Fire) can be found in the vault. Today the Institute's 23 courtyards and 106 rooms house the permanent collection by Orozco and other artists, as well as temporary exhibitions. For a stunning view of the Institute, stand at the edge of the water mirror — in the Plaza Tapatía — and look towards the back of the building. The Ballet Folklórico de Jalisco performs here Wednesdays at 8:30pm. There is also a gift shop.

Galería Sergio Bustamante "Surrealist crafts to browse and buy"

Somewhat of a peculiar gallery, it is located in the center of Tlaquepaque and adorned with a pond, a waterfall and papier maché flamingos in the midst of an old mansion. Inside, the personal exhibition of owner Sergio Bustamante is on display, consisting of unique, surrealistic jewelery and handicrafts in brightly-colored metal and ceramic. In fact, Bustamante by dailyinvention introduced the world to Tlaquepaque's papier maché sculptures. The creations available at this gallery are unique pieces, and each comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Centro de Ciencia y Tecnología Planetario "Fun and science hand in hand"

The city planetarium, designed to introduce science to the general population, was opened in 1982 and named after the distinguished scientist and priest Severo Días Saavedra. Discover the components of an aeroplane, enter the cockpit of a Boeing 707 or a F-105 fighter bomber. by dailyinvention On the softer side, the human body is explored with full-scale, anatomic models. Astronomy enthusiasts can observe the stars every Friday from 8pm and take a workshop to construct a working telescope. Their own Newtonian telescope is 11 inches in diameter with a 100-inch focal length. There are many interactive exhibitions of different aspects of science and technology, including biology, physics, chemistry and maths.

Zoológico Guadalajara "Zoo with 360 different species"

On the barranca (slope) of Huentitán, lies the expansive Guadalajara Zoo. Besides the marvellous view from here, there are 2,000 animals, representing 360 different species to be seen. There is an impressive reptile section, two aviaries, a petting zoo, an area to observe nocturnal species, an interactive museum and a roofed auditorium seating 3,500 by Pablasso people. Either walk the zoo or take the sightseeing train that passes regularly. Stroller rentals, cafés, soda fountains and souvenirs shops are available. The Selva Mágica amusement park is found right next to the zoo, which takes a day in itself to tour.

Basílica de Zapopan "Pay a Visit to the Virgin General"

Dominating the Plaza de las Americas, Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Zapopan is among the most revered sanctuaries in Western . This 17th-century masterpiece is an intricate blend of Baroque and Spanish colonial architectural styles. From its Moorish dome to plateresque edifice and its ornate interiors, attention to detail in every aspect highlights its by Iqmann craftsmanship. Not only known for its architectural beauty, but as the home of the Virgin of Zapopan, the Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan houses a Huichol Museum inside. According to local legend, the Virgin appeared twice to assist the town museum hence is the patron saint of Zapopan. The Romería is an important religious festival held in October annually.
