This study explores in greater depth the political and ceremonial relations that existed between the ceremonial district of Xatsitsarie and San Andrés Cohamiata , one of three Wixaritari (Huichol) communities in the area of the Chapalagana River, in the northern area of the state of Jalisco ( Figure 1 , shown below). Moreover, it analyzes how the destruction of the Temple ( Tuki ) of Guadalupe Ocotán, together with the modification of the community's territory, determined the collapse of these ceremonial links in the second half of the 20th century. The ceremonial reorganization of this district is analyzed using a diachronic perspective, in which the ethnographic record, which begins with Lumholtz' work in the late 19th century, is contrasted with reports by missionaries and oral history. Similarly, on the basis of ethnographic data and information provided by archaeological studies, this study offers a reinterpretation of certain ethnohistorical sources related to the antecedents of these ceremonial centers. -

A pit used primarily as a receptacle for ash removed from a hearth or firepit. In a pit structure, the ash pit is commonly oval or rectangular and is located south of the hearth or firepit. bedrock feature. A feature constructed into bedrock that does not fit any of the other feature types listed here. bell-shaped cist. A large pit whose greatest diameter is substantially larger than the diameter of its opening.A storage function is implied, but the feature may not contain any stored materials, in which case the shape of the pit is sufficient for assigning this feature type. bench surface. Mexico's Indigenous and Folk Art Comes to Chapala
Mexico’s indigenous and folk art comes to Chapala Each year Experience Mex‐ECO Tours promotes a trip which we call the ‘Chapala Artisan Fair’, but this is much more than just a shopping trip; so what’s it really all about? The Feria Maestros del Arte (Masters of Art Fair) is the name given to this annual event in Chapala, and also the name of the non‐profit organization which puts in an incredible amount of work to make it happen. In 2002 an amazing lady called Marianne Carlson came up with the idea of bringing some of the artists and artisans she came across in rural Mexico to Ajijic to sell their high quality traditional work. After a successful first fair, with 13 artists being very well received by the public, Marianne decided to make this an annual event. Providing an outlet for traditional Mexican artists and artisans to sell their work, the Feria Maestros del Arte has provided many families with the opportunity to continue creating Experience Mex‐ECO Tours S.A. de C.V. | www.mex‐ecotours.com | info@mex‐ecotours.com their important cultural representations by allowing them to pursue this as a career, rather than seeking alternative employment. Here is their mission as a non‐profit organization: “To preserve and promote Mexican indigenous and folk art. We help preserve these art forms and the culture that produces them by providing the artists a venue to sell their work to galleries, collectors, museums and corporations. We promote regional and international awareness to the value of these endangered arts.” The efforts made by the Feria committee and its many volunteers mean that the artists and artisans not only have a chance to generate more income in a few days than they may otherwise generate in a year, but also the chance to be recognized by buyers and collectors from around the world. -

El pueblo mágico de Tequila, México Dr. José Manuel Saiz-Álvarez is a GIEE Faculty-Researcher at the EGADE Business School-Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexi- co) and visiting professor at the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil (Ecuador) and the Universidad Mayor, Real and Pontificia San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca (Bolivia) ([email protected]) ([email protected]) (http://orcid.org/0000- 0001- 6435-9600) Abstract The UNESCO World Heritage Site and the “Magic Towns” program in Mexico, both granted to Tequila, aim to guarantee the tourist sustainability of the territory to fight poverty, preserve the rich and unique existing cultural and historical heritage, and promote the inclusion of the indigenous population. However, 57,1% of the population lives in poverty in Tequila (IIEG Jalisco, 2017). The objective of this paper is to analyze whether the appointment of Tequila as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and as “Magic Town” has contributed to reducing poverty. A qualitative-quantitative methodology based on the technique of observation and content analysis is used to answer this question, close with a SWOT analysis to have a holistic review of the topic. The main conclusions are: 1. There are high levels of poverty in Tequila, although they are lower than in non-Agave locations; 2. Excessive tequila protection prevents the development of other distilled beverages within the region; 3. -

LADB Article Id: 78623 ISSN: 1054-8890 Huichol Indians Gain Protected Status for Sacred Lands in San Luis Potosí by Carlos Navarro Category/Department: Mexico Published: 2012-05-30 Indigenous-rights and environmental activists scored a major victory when the Mexican government denied a permit for Canada’s First Majestic Silver Corporation to develop a mine in the ancestral lands of the Huichol Indians, also known as the Wixárika. The decision was symbolic because the Canadian company had already announced its intention not to proceed with the mining project. The move opened the door for the Secretaría de Gobernación (SEGOB) to declare the area known as Wirikuta in San Luis Potosí part of a wider protected area for the Huichol. The specific location designated for protection is known as Cerro Quemado, a mountain where the Huichol believe the sun was born. The Huichol, who are scattered across several states in central Mexico, still conduct ceremonies and make an annual pilgrimage to the Wirikuta reserve near the town of Real de Catorce. -

Va desde la suposición de que hubo migraciones en gran número y un intercambio comercial intenso, hasta la posición de que las interacciones fueron escasas. De igual forma varían las presunciones sobre el grado de influencia mutua que había.1200 10.1 Determinación del territorio en cuestión 10.1.1 Términos y definiciones Antes de analizar las relaciones que los habitantes del Estado tarasco tuvieron con gente al norte de su territorio, hay que definir de qué territorio se trata. Para el territorio adyacente a la frontera norteña mesoamericana hay varios términos empleados: norte de México, Gran Chichimeca, Chichimecatlalli, Mesoamérica Marginal, Aridoamérica, y, para áreas más norteñas, sudoeste (de Estados Unidos)/Southwest o Greater Southwest o Oasisamérica. En mi opinión, ninguno de estos términos es ideal. Sin embargo es necesario verlos uno por uno. Norte de México, Southwest y Greater Southwest El norte de México es un término empleado sobre todo por investigadores mexicanos y se basa en la división de la actual República Mexicana en pequeñas subdivisiones culturales hecha por arqueólogos y antropólogos. -

It has been remodelled, however, and is definitely worth a visit. Today, the ex-Convento functions as a cultural center. Some of its halls display art exhibitions while others stage by alej+hern%C3%A1ndez plays, recitals and chamber music concerts. The impressive mural found here was painted in 1917 by the internationally renowned muralist José David Alfaro Siqueiros and Amado de la Cueva, a Tapatío painter.
