Today, a new generation of street-food lovers is lining up at food trucks and food carts like never before. Little do they know that neither food trucks nor food carts are new to the streets of American cities. Like so many other popular trends, they are the latest version of a long-standing part of American and world culture. Yet the street-food industry has never enjoyed so much publicity or notoriety. According to Los Angeles-based industry-research firm IBISWorld, the street- food business -- including mobile food trucks and nonmechanized carts -- is a $1 billion industry that has seen an 8.4 percent growth rate from 2007 to 2012. It's very entrepreneurial: 78 percent of operators have four or fewer employees. The true number of these businesses is difficult to count, since the mobile food industry is comprised of food trucks, food carts and kiosks, which have appeared in malls as well as at train and bus stations, airports, stadiums, conference centers, resorts, and other locations in recent years. Food-industry observers claim that the food-truck business is increasing largely in response to the slow-growing economy. People are seeking inexpensive breakfasts and lunches. Also, employees today are often pressed for time, with more work and shorter lunch hours. These factors make the mobile-food concept more appealing than ever. From an entrepreneurial standpoint, kiosks, carts, trailers, and food trucks have a lower overhead than restaurants and can be moved if one location does not generate enough business.

The energy in this area is contagious, as theatergoers, orchestra fans, opera lovers, dance aficionados and artists themselves spill onto the street to mix with the locals who live, work and dine on the thoroughfare. The Avenue of the Arts is home to the striking Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the legendary Academy of Music, The Wilma Theater, Merriam Theater, University of the Arts, Arts Bank and more cultural landmarks. Music fans can look down and trace Philadelphia’s musical legacy along the sidewalk’s Walk of Fame. Both visitors and locals stop to ogle City Hall, the architectural exclamation point to Broad Street’s elaborate buildings. Also awe-inspiring is the Octavius V. Catto Memorial on the southwest side of City Hall. The monument commemorates the short life and heroic deeds of Catto, a post-Civil War civil rights activist. The Philadelphia Orchestra, Pennsylvania Ballet, Opera Philadelphia and other internationally acclaimed artists perform inside the buildings along the Avenue of the Arts. But activities that take place outside also endear the Avenue to the masses. One example: the annual Mummers Parade, the nation’s oldest folk parade, held here on New Year’s Day.

I grew up in the west (Montana)and have been living in NYC for 2.5 years. I often have family and friends asking for advice on how to navigate NYC and my favorite spots, many of who have never been in a big city. Out of that grew this labor of love since I don’t have the means to show everyone around this city which I am so passionate about. I’ve wanted to move here since I was 9 (20 years ago!) so I have a lot of favorite spots. This city is vibrant and full of gorgeous history and I hope this helps you out. I can be reached at [email protected] Here we go! Where to stay: It depends largely on whether you plan to use the subway or not to get around. It’s the easiest and cheapest way to get around NYC. It makes where you choose to stay pretty flexible, so long as you’re within reasonable distance of a subway. Lots of first time tourists stay in Times Square, which tends to be a little pricier and busier, but it does keeps you centrally located. There are lots of great hotels in Manhattan in lots of neighborhoods other than midtown Manhattan that are affordable and easy to access by subway.
