Teachers needmany kinds of help if they are to teach each individual to read to the best of his ability. This booklet, a title in IRA's Reading Aids series, has been designed for thepurpose of providing teachers with practical assistance. The contents include suggestions for elementary and secondaryschool_ teachers to use in helping students learn how to study textbookmaterial and how to read narrative material. The ideas relateto the kinds of reading which students do in their school textbooks inscience, social studies, mathematics, English, and litrature and in the books theyuse to extend their education through reading on their own. The first part of this booklet concentrateson the study type of reading and explains how students can apply study techniquesto their everyday assignments. The fundamental skills of readingare reviewed and purposes for reading are pointed out. The second part concerns the teaching of literature in theelementary school. Teachers have long read aloud to children and haveencouraged them to read books of literary value; only recently haveteachers given careful thought to the teaching of literature. WE STUDY for only one reasonto learn. Yetmany students study to cover an assignment, to read a certain number ofpages, or to put in a, certain amount of time. Not all of these aimsare important in themselves. The aim of studying should be to' achieve particularlearning outcomes. Becoming informed about new information and gainingnew understand- ings of previously learned materialsare the real aims of study, not just turning over a number of pages. What is Learning? Learning is acquiring new ways of doing thingsor satisfying desires. Notice the doing idea in this definition. We donot consider learning as transferring facts from a book to someone's mind. Wedo not consider learning as storing facts or information in the mind. Youhave heard the expression "educated moron." This isa term applied to people who have merely transmitted facts from some other locationto their minds. In our definition of learning much more than this ismeant. A person has learned effectively when he can do well, whatever his workis, and succeed in life as a whole. No matter how many facts a person has, unless hecan use those facts in doing his work well, in living happily, andin getting along well in life generally, he has not learned anythingworthwhile. What Are the Fundamental Skills? The art of learning requires various skills andmany kinds of books and materials. In most formal learning situations the textbookis the basic resource and the student is expected to be able to read and study itto achieve certain learning objectives. At thispoint it may be helpful to summarize the fundamental skills which underlie readingin the content area to provide guidelines for reading books. Even though authoritiesmay differ in identifying these skills,some insight can be gained from reflecting upon the lists presented by two writers. Spache (6) lists six skills which he feels are basic and necessary for successfulreading of books in the content areas: 1 'VP 1. Ability to survey materials to determine a. general nature b. the main idea c. the appropriate reading approach d. the purpose for reading 2. Ability to relate knowledge gained by surveying to the choice of an appropriate reading technique 3. Flexibility in rate of reading sufficient to permit varying speeds,or reading techniques such as skimming, scanning, rapid reading, and study-type reading 4. Ability to handle graphic and illustrative materials effectively. 5. Skill in using the library and basic references peculiar to the field 6. Skill in general abilities such as rate, comprehension, and vocabulary Davis (6) suggests that an instructor need not be an expert in reading to provide students with the necessary skills to aid academic success. He identifies six areas, quite similar to those of Spache: 1. Give attention to students' readiness for reading the assigned material. 2. Give attention to the readability of assigned textbooks and supple- mentary reading material. 3. Show students how to preview Teading material. 4. Help students realize the importance of varying techniques of read- ing to fit the material and the purpose. 5. Help students to locate supplementary reading material on the sub- ject. 6. Help students improve their knowledge of the vocabulary of the subject. These skills will, as Coulter (5) writes, "... prepare the learner in the abilities necessary to understand, to interrelate, to implement, and to fur- ther explore the knowledge of the field." Because a student's specific reading abilities, skills, and interests vary from one subject to another, it is logical to conclude that reading skills and techniques peculiar to a particu- lar subject should be taught in that subject. Research tehds to show that training in how to read and study in a subject area promotes greater learning in that subject. Reading is a composite of many skills anda developmental skill which should be continuously taught in each grade and subject from first grade through college. While reading and studyingare individual matters, itis good pedagogy to instruct students in basic methods and techniques which they can adapt to their personal use and development. 2 Chapter 2 SQ3R STUDY METHOD EACH INDIVIDUAL has his own approach and hisown techniques for studying. Different students will go about studying in somewhat different ways; different techniques are suited to different people. However, there are good rules to use to facilitate effective study.

Today many more of the young men and women who complete high school enter and complete four years of college; a much larger proportion of the population has become literate in spite of or even because of the popularity of radio and television. There has been a shift of interest from the reading of fiction to the reading of nonfiction. The educators of the country have acknowledged that teaching the young to read, in the most elementary sense of that word, is our paramount educational problem. A recent Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, designating the seventies as the Decade of Reading, has dedicated federal funds in support of a wide variety of efforts to improveproficiency in this basic skill, and many of those efforts have scored some success at the level at which children are initiated into the art of reading.

This expansion creates a new relationship with the author, opening the horizon of the authorial imagination beyond the discourse community from which the author and the text originate.     How to Read Historical Writing Reading history is very different from reading fiction. The purpose of reading a textbook is to develop a coherent overview of a particular topic. The purpose of reading a historical monograph or an article is to understand and remember key themes, supporting evidence offered, and the author’s interpretation. You may read a textbook, article, or monograph for a class discussion, writing a paper, or taking an exam. You must understand why you are reading before you begin, so that you can read appropriately. Reading history requires writing! Simply reading something over and over merely allows you to recognize it; you DO NOT really learn it. The only way to read history for content and understanding is to systematically take notes. You must be willing to make the time to take notes and study thoroughly, or you cannot expect to do well in history courses. How to read a textbook: First, look at the title of the assigned chapter. This will give you a sense of what general information is covered. Next, look at the sub-headings. These will tell you the main theme of each section within the chapter. Once you have a rough idea of what to expect, make a written outline of the sub-headings, leaving plenty of room to fill in key ideas. Now you can read the chapter, looking for the main idea expressed in each paragraph. Write these main ideas into your outline. Highlight or underline sparingly. You should highlight only 10% of what you read, and highlighted material should consist only of brief key words - ones that help to trigger your memory about what you should put in your outline.

How can you learn the most from a book — or any other piece of writing — when you're reading for information, rather than for pleasure? It’s satisfying to start at the beginning and read straight through to the end. Some books, such as novels, have to be read this way, since a basic principle of fiction is to hold the reader in suspense. Your whole purpose in reading fiction is to follow the writer’s lead, allowing him or her to spin a story bit by bit. But many of the books, articles, and other documents you’ll read during your undergraduate and graduate years, and possibly during the rest of your professional life, won’t be novels. Instead, they’ll be non‐fiction: textbooks, manuals, journal articles, histories, academic studies, and so on. The purpose of reading things like this is to gain, and retain, information. Here, finding out what happens — as quickly and easily as possible — is your main goal. So unless you’re stuck in prison with nothing else to do, NEVER read a non‐fiction book or article from beginning to end. Instead, when you’re reading for information, you should ALWAYS jump ahead, skip around, and use every available strategy to discover, then to understand, and finally to remember what the writer has to say.

    Info 1/14 The Kid From Out of Town During my sophomore year of high school, a family moved into our rural, southeastern Wisconsin school district. Their two kids had been educated in the fancy private schools in the inner suburbs of Chicago, which was immediately evident by the books they were reading. The son was a year older than me and our daily interaction took place when he pulled his French horn from the instrument locker next to the one where my baritone was stored. He was always reading until the last possible moment before band class started. His selections of Poe, Twain, and Fitzgerald were distantly familiar, but one day he entered reading Mortimer Adler’s How To Read A Book. You can only imagine the number of times he was sarcastically asked, “How do you read a book about reading books if you don’t know how to read a book?” Everyone took their shot. The cheap and easy laughs at his expense showed just how insecure the rest of my class- mates and I were. I may have been one of the kids mocking that boy, but twenty years later, my view could not be more different. During the year it took to write The 100 Best Business Books of All Time, Jack and I had to start reading a new book at the beginning of each week and compose a thoughtful review of the book’s premise and arguments by week’s end to reach our contractual deadline. While we had both reviewed books for years, the pace of the book project made it essential for us to discover a set of reading rules that could be used to save time and improve comprehension as you navigate the thousands of business books that are published each year.
