This bunny became the inspiration for Miffy. Later, when Dick began sketching Miffy, he decided he would prefer to draw the bunny in a little dress, rather than a pair of trousers, and so Miffy became a little girl bunny. Question about sizing? Dick Bruna's characters, Miffy and Snuffy come to life in this simple mini pop-up book with bold illustrations and simple text. Miffy meets camels, lions, and other animals on her trip to the zoo. The author, a long-time storytime facilitator, has put together 52 weekly themes plus additional plans for holidays, all with detailed instructions for talking about the theme and choosing the books, crafts, songs, poems, games and snacks. Each storytime idea is illustrated with photographs of a suggested craft and snack for easy reference. Libraries, bookstores, preschools and parents alike can use this book to offer themed storytimes that include discussion, literature, art, music, movement and food. Options are provided for each storytime, so the ideas can be used year after year. When Miffy visits the seaside with her father, she builds a sandcastle, looks for seashells and has a swim in the ocean. After her fun day, she falls asleep on the way home. Father Bunny thinks that Miffy is too small to go to an art gallery, but she persuades him to let her come along with him and Mother Bunny. Miffy sees paintings, a mobile and even Miffy at the Zoo stone statue, which is all very exciting. Miffy soon decides that she wants to be an artist when she grows up. Stories, Pictures and Reality follows two children as they work out the reality status of stories and pictures, with a daily parent-observer record from the birth of the first child until the second is eight, a span of eleven years in all. Together these children pick through the meaning of stories and the motivations of the characters they discover in this unique first-hand description of the discernment that children bring to books from an early age, full of revealing quotes that tell us a great deal about the cognitive development of our young readers: "It's a joke 'cause it couldn't really have happened", "I'll tell you what's pretend: Batman, Robin, Superman, pirates, cowboys and Indians". In analysis this longitudinal study shows that children have more insight and understanding than they are often given credit for and that they approach subjects that puzzle the most sophisticated of thinkers with an elegant simplicity beyond the expectations of conventional psychologists and children's literature commentators. This book urges readers, especially practitioners and academics, to afford greater respect to what young children are capable of in this area. On a sunny day, Miffy gets on a swing to stay cool, but decides swimming is the best way to enjoy a hot day. Miffy's Mini Shape Books are Miffy at the Zoo available! With this small format designed fit into small hands, children can take Miffy wherever they go, carrying the books on outings, on trips, to school In Good Morning, Miffy, Miffy takes the reader through a typical day in her life: having breakfast, going for a walk, playing with ducks at the park, and finally heading to bed with her favorite teddy Miffy at the Zoo. Miffy is very proud of herself in Miffy Helps at Home. Because Miffy is learning to do helpful things like watering flowers and arranging her toys. At the end Miffy gets a special treat from her mother as a reward. Miffy does one of her favorite things in Miffy Tours the Zoo, where she encounters various kinds of animals -- a camel, a lion, a rhino, a kangaroo Miffy at the Zoo, and more! Miffy loves the zoo and promises the giraffes that she will come again. Miffy at the Zoo by Dick Bruna If feeling stressed, one of my favourite YouTube videos to watch is Dick Bruna at work in his studio. At first, the artist draws out the famously rounded cheeks of this little rabbit onto a piece of tracing paper, neatly placed on top of a white Miffy at the Zoo. Pressing hard, his drawing is indented in the paper below, invisible until carefully outlined with black ink, which he keeps in an ashtray, balancing a paintbrush where a cigarette would sit.

  • Mariko Mori and the Globalization of Japanese “Cute”Culture
《藝術學研究》 2015 年 6 月,第十六期,頁 131-168 Mariko Mori and the Globalization of Japanese “Cute” Culture: Art and Pop Culture in the 1990s SooJin Lee Abstract This essay offers a cultural-historical exploration of the significance of the Japanese artist Mariko Mori (b. 1967) and her emergence as an international art star in the 1990s. After her New York gallery debut show in 1995, in which she exhibited what would later become known as her Made in Japan series— billboard-sized color photographs of herself striking poses in various “cute,” video-game avatar-like futuristic costumes—Mori quickly rose to stardom and became the poster child for a globalizing Japan at the end of the twentieth century. I argue that her Made in Japan series was created (in Japan) and received (in the Western-dominated art world) at a very specific moment in history, when contemporary Japanese art and popular culture had just begun to rise to international attention as emblematic and constitutive of Japan’s soft power. While most of the major writings on the series were published in the late 1990s, problematically the Western part of this criticism reveals a nascent and quite uneven understanding of the contemporary Japanese cultural references that Mori was making and using. I will examine this reception, and offer a counter-interpretation, analyzing the relationship between Mori’s Made in Japan photographs and Japanese pop culture, particularly by discussing the Japanese mass cultural aesthetic of kawaii (“cute”) in Mori’s art and persona. In so doing, I proffer an analogy between Mori and popular Japanimation characters, SooJin Lee received her PhD in Art History from the University of Illinois-Chicago and was a lecturer at the School of Art Institute of Chicago.

  • Dejima and Huis Ten Bosch •fi Two Dutch Cities in Japan
Hausutembosu (Huis ten Bosch) by Bettina Brandt Looking for traces of historical Dutch-Japanese trade relations in the Nagasaki area, Y and I stopped at Huis ten Bosch, a Dutch theme park in Sasebo that doubles as a waterfront resort-cum-residential area, drawing tourists as well as those interested in experiments in urban living. Most of the tourists come from Southeast Asia (Japan, Taiwan, Korea); tourists from other places are few and far between. A local Japanese tycoon envisioned the park in the late eighties, at a time when a number of such ethno-themed parks—known in Japanese as gaikoku mura (foreign villages)—were being built. Period parks like Edo Wonderland in Hokkaido (tagline: “the essence of Japan”) are also popular tema paku destinations in Japan. There, tourists can visit the past and walk around in Edo-period costumes (and dress up like a samurai, wear a ninja costume, or perhaps dress up as a yuujo , 遊女, or “play woman”) for the day. The Japanese theater troupe Lasenkan in Berlin When Huis ten Bosch finally opened its doors to the public in the early 1990s, however, the recession was about to hit, and the park, one of the subsidiaries of the Huis ten Bosch Corporation, has been in receivership twice already. Three times the size of the Mall in Washington D. C., Huis ten Bosch is one of Asia’s largest parks. One could call it a Japanese polder , Dutch for land that was reclaimed and drained. The tourist attraction on the island of Kyushu is named after Paleis Huis ten Bosch, the residence of Queen Beatrix in The Hague, the political capital of the Netherlands.

Classic Children's Character Miffy Celebrates 55 years Submitted by: Highlight PR Tuesday, 15 June 2010 Global brand, design icon, classic character, Miffy celebrates her 55th anniversary on Monday 21st June 2010. Worldwide celebrations, including two free events in the UK, are marking the success and timeless appeal of Dick Bruna’s little white bunny. A UK press event is also being held in London this Friday, see editor’s notes below for details. In today’s world of computer games and 3D entertainment, Miffy’s simple design still looks fresh, whilst her charm continues to resonate with millions. Proof is in her growing international presence: the books are published in nearly 50 languages, merchandise spans five continents (walk into John Lewis, Mothercare or Asda in the UK and you’ll find Miffy), the TV show broadcasts daily in the US, a giant field of 120,000 tulips immortalises her face annually in Japan, hotels in Hong Kong have Miffy-themed rooms, and there is a Miffy museum in Holland. Dick Bruna, Miffy’s creator, should also be celebrated. Now aged 82, he continues to work six days a week in his studio in Utrecht, writing and illustrating picture books for children. He has published 120 books to date, 30 of which are about Miffy. He shows no signs of slowing down, and lives by his mantra for timeless design: “What matters is reducing everything to its essence, so that no line is redundant. That is the strength of simplicity: the art of omission” Global celebrations for Miffy’s 55th birthday take place over the next few months.

The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, D.C., DC 20500 [VIA EMAIL] April 9th, 2021 Dear President Biden, I am writing to deliver a petition, attached to this letter, signed by 29,318 people urging you to put an end to the racial profiling of Asian Americans and Asian immigrants and end the Justice Department’s “China Initiative.” Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC worked with directly impacted persons, who were inspired to take action but chose to remain anonymous due to fear, to launch this petition urging you to immediately end the “China Initiative” and the federal government’s racial profiling and targeting of Asian American and Asian immigrant scientists, researchers, and scholars, particularly by the Department of Justice (DOJ), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF). We thank you for your public condemnation of racism, xenophobia, and intolerance against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States and look forward to the administration's efforts to combat profiling within our federal institutions. Along with almost 30,000 impacted persons, concerned citizens, and community members, we seek to draw your attention to the increasing targeting and racial profiling of Asian Americans and Asian immigrants, particularly those of Chinese descent, who are working in science and technology. Asian Americans and immigrants across the country face not only the deathly impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and devastating attacks of hate on their most vulnerable, but are also being scapegoated and targeted by law enforcement and the federal government. This fear is only heightened by racist policies and xenophobic rhetoric from public officials fueling this resurgent xenophobia.

PUBLIC FOUNDATION GREATER Educational Resource DES MOINES ART MIFFY FOUNTAIN BY TOM SACHS PHOTO: BEN EASTER ARTWORK BIO Miffy is a cute little bunny who is the star of an internationally renowned series of children’s books that follow her innocent adventures. Drawn with simple lines and flat, bright colors, she has become an icon of childhood, with almost 40 Miffy books translated into over 50 languages. Miffy is also a merchandising giant, with her features found on dozens of commercial objects. The contemporary American artist Tom Sachs adapts the sweet and guileless bunny in his Miffy Fountain in which she cries a fountain of tears which fall into a pool surrounding her. Transformed from the pages of a children’s book into a three- dimensional, monumental sculpture, Miffy was constructed with foamcore and glue which was then cast into bronze and painted white. ARTIST BIO Sculptor Tom Sachs is best known for reinterpreting modern icons and commenting on consumerist and capitalist culture. Sachs engineers materials of all sorts in his works, often leaving evidence of his construction process, as he does in Miffy Fountain, where the seams of the original foamcore sections are maintained in the bronze. The artist is interested in subverting the slick anonymity of many manufactured objects by purposely revealing how his objects are fabricated, as he explained: “I want 1 labor to be the point, because everything in our lives is miraculously made with no idea of how it’s done….I wanted a transparency of construction.”* *www.artnet.com/artists/tom-sachs/2 Sachs furthered his repertoire with a Nike sneaker collaboration, releasing the NikeCraft Mars Yard sneaker in 2012.
