《藝術學研究》 2015 年 6 月,第十六期,頁 131-168 Mariko Mori and the Globalization of Japanese “Cute” Culture: Art and Pop Culture in the 1990s SooJin Lee Abstract This essay offers a cultural-historical exploration of the significance of the Japanese artist Mariko Mori (b. 1967) and her emergence as an international art star in the 1990s. After her New York gallery debut show in 1995, in which she exhibited what would later become known as her Made in Japan series— billboard-sized color photographs of herself striking poses in various “cute,” video-game avatar-like futuristic costumes—Mori quickly rose to stardom and became the poster child for a globalizing Japan at the end of the twentieth century. I argue that her Made in Japan series was created (in Japan) and received (in the Western-dominated art world) at a very specific moment in history, when contemporary Japanese art and popular culture had just begun to rise to international attention as emblematic and constitutive of Japan’s soft power. While most of the major writings on the series were published in the late 1990s, problematically the Western part of this criticism reveals a nascent and quite uneven understanding of the contemporary Japanese cultural references that Mori was making and using. I will examine this reception, and offer a counter-interpretation, analyzing the relationship between Mori’s Made in Japan photographs and Japanese pop culture, particularly by discussing the Japanese mass cultural aesthetic of kawaii (“cute”) in Mori’s art and persona. In so doing, I proffer an analogy between Mori and popular Japanimation characters, SooJin Lee received her PhD in Art History from the University of Illinois-Chicago and was a lecturer at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. -

THE STORY OF FOUNTAIN: HARD FACTS AND SOFT SPECULATION Thierry de Duve ABSTRACT Thierry de Duve’s essay is anchored to the one and perhaps only hard fact that we possess regarding the story of Fountain: its photo in The Blind Man No. 2, triply captioned “Fountain by R. Mutt,” “Photograph by Alfred Stieglitz,” and “THE EXHIBIT REFUSED BY THE INDEPENDENTS,” and the editorial on the facing page, titled “The Richard Mutt Case.” He examines what kind of agency is involved in that triple “by,” and revisits Duchamp’s intentions and motivations when he created the fictitious R. Mutt, manipulated Stieglitz, and set a trap to the Independents. De Duve concludes with an invitation to art historians to abandon the “by” questions (attribution, etc.) and to focus on the “from” questions that arise when Fountain is not seen as a work of art so much as the bearer of the news that the art world has radically changed. Mentally I was not spelling art with a capital A. — Beatrice Wood1 No doubt, Marcel Duchamp’s best known and most controversial readymade is a men’s urinal tipped on its side, signed R. Mutt, dated 1917, and titled Fountain. The 2017 centennial of Fountain brought us a harvest of new books and articles on the famous or infamous urinal. I read most of them in the hope of gleaning enough newly verified facts to curtail my natural tendency to speculate. But newly verified facts are few and far between. -
Duchamp's Readymades
INTRODUCTION: DUCHAMP’S READYMADES — A REEVALUATION In a poll conducted for Gordon’s Gin, the 2004 sponsor of the Turner Prize, a large majority of the 500 leading artists, dealers, critics and curators surveyed named Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain (Fig. 1.8) the work of art that has had the highest impact on contemporary art today. The urinal that in April 1917 was turned around, signed R. Mutt, handed in to but then refused (or at least displaced) from the exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in New York still seems to mock and destabilize the whole horizon of expectance that works of art generate: skill, originality, taste, aesthetic value, difference from utilitarian technology, distance from bodily functions, even stable objecthood. Although many observers worry that the art institution has long since domesticated and commercialized the avant-gardist riot that Fountain took part in initiating, this object—albeit lost almost immediately after it was conceived—retains its status as an ever- flowing source for the disruptive and subversive energy in which contemporary art forms, at least desire to, participate. Whereas its closest competitor in the same poll, Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon from 1907, makes its revolution still in the domain of form—as if, in Braque’s words, Picasso had drunk petroleum in order to spit fire at the canvas—Fountain and its small family of other readymades make their riot by completely abandoning the battlefield of forms, what Duchamp termed the retinal. On the one hand, by appropriating pieces of technology that were not produced by Duchamp himself but by machines—a urinal, a bottle dryer, a dog comb, a snow shovel, an art reproduction, and so on—the readymades bring attention to what we could call the thingness of art: that despite all the transformations to which the artist can subject artistic materials, there is still a leftover of something pre-given, a naked materiality imported from the real, non-imaginary world. -

Het ter ziele gegane blad Deng zette een "Lijntje" op de cover van een nummer over cokeverslaving. Van de rechter moest het blad uit de handel. Recentere "Lijntjes" in Nederland mochten van de rechtbank dan weer wél, omdat het echte parodieën waren en ver genoeg afweken van het origineel. Bekend is ook de tekening "Nijn eleven", met nijntje in een vliegtuig richting Twin Towers. In eigen land was er de tv-reeks Musti , getekend door wijlen Ray Goossens die ook "Plons de gekke kikker" bedacht. Het katje Musti lijkt sterk op nijntje, vond ook Dick Bruna, maar Goossens zei dat hij het figuurtje als eerste had bedacht. Een Japanse creatie is Hello Kitty ° , een kattenmeisje van wie de ogen en de mond op die van nijntje lijken. -

Take a Miffy-themed Mini-Break to Holland this Spring Submitted by: Highlight PR Monday, 14 February 2011 Families with young children wanting a European mini break should head to Holland this Spring, as three new Miffy-themed destinations (http://www.miffy.com) are certain to delight fans of Dick Bruna’s classic white bunny. i. New Miffy play area at Keukenhof The first ever Miffy-themed play area launches at one of the most popular destinations in Holland: the world famous Keukenhof Gardens (http://www.keukenhof.nl), open to the public from 24 March to 20 May 2011, easily reachable by regular shuttle buses direct from Schipol airport (20 mins), or via a day’s excursion from Amsterdam. Filled with more than seven million Spring flowers in bloom, Keukenhof offers a stunning day out, and is the most photographed place in the world. The park, which covers 32 hectares with 15km of footpaths, is geared up for families, with an organised treasure hunt to learn about the different flowers in the park, a large playground, a jungle gym and a petting zoo. The new Miffy children’s play area will add to this offering, providing a dedicated area for younger children aged 2 to 4 years.
