New Footpath link from Skyswood Road to Knightwood Leisure Centre

The new footpath link from Skyswood Road to the Knightwood Leisure Centre will commence on the 15th November. The works will be carried out by RONCON who anticipate the project being complete before Christmas. A new height barrier will also be installed to complete the project.

Success in saving the Stagecoach 46 bus service

After the long campaign to prevent this service being cut out all together I have achieved 90% success. Only two trips a day - one up to and one coming back from Winchester to North Baddesley will be cut.

The 461 journeys at 0925 and 1445 will also run all year, not just on college days.

I am now negotiating with Stagecoach to see if the parish councils of North Baddesley/Valley Park & could offer some financial support to maintain the same service as previously because people within these areas are living longer and will not always be able to drive and more will depend on this bus service .

If the service had been cut totally many people in the Ampfield/Valley Park & North Baddesley would be left isolated. I am so pleased I started the campaign and I was helped by people protesting.

The new nets and the white lining of the Basketball Court at Knightwood Leisure Centre was asked for by local youngsters and supported by the Councillors and the Valley Park Parish Council.

5 It’s Cold Out There!

With the cold weather settling in, it’s a good idea to start making plans to avoid some Christmas calamities and keep our pets healthy throughout the festive season.

Winter walks: In order to avoid pets expanding their waistline, getting out and about as the weather cools is essential. However, make sure that your pets are adequately prepared; when outside they may need to wear waterproof and warm jackets, especially if they are older or have thin coats. Some salt mixtures on paths, and also snow building up between the paws, can cause limping and pain. So, do check your pet’s feet regularly and make sure they are washed and clean after every walk.

Toxic alert: Anti-freeze poisonings increase at this time of year because we use it more in our cars. Although it is highly toxic, it tastes very sweet and pets - in particular, cats, will drink it readily. Make sure your car isn’t leaking any fluid and keep cans or bottles of it well out of reach and cleaned on the outside. Also, clean up any spills straight away. Even a few licks can be fatal.

Outdoor pets: Rabbits and guinea pigs are ideally moved inside or cover their hutch with an old blanket. Make sure they have plenty of bedding and that their water supply is fresh twice daily. Check them at least once a day to ensure they are bright, eating and are well. If you have a rabbit or guinea pig who lives alone, now is the ideal time to think about getting a friend of the same species so they have someone to cuddle up with!

Festive alert: Pieces of string, tinsel and bones from turkeys should be kept well out of reach to avoid an intestinal blockage and the possible need for life saving surgery. Baubles and lights, if broken and eaten, will cause serious damage to your pet. Similarly we see lots of problems at this time of year from pets eating things like chocolate, christmas cake and mince pies.

So – enjoy the festive season and follow these tips to keep your pets safe and healthy. As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in touch.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that again this year, we shall be collecting food and toy donations for the pets at Second Chance Animal Welfare who find themselves without a home this Christmas. Please bring all donations of pet food and treats to us before 24th December and we will then deliver it to Second Chance. From all of us at Village Vets, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Q I’ve had my Universal Credit payments reduced for missing an appointment. I don’t think this is fair as I had a good reason for not being able to attend. Now I am struggling to make ends meet. What should I do?

A If you think the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has made a mistake in reducing your payments, you can ask for the decision to be reconsidered.

Contact the department as soon as possible setting out why you disagree with the decision. Make sure to include the date of the decision and your personal information, including your National Insurance number.

You can ask for this reconsideration in your Universal Credit online account, using a form on the government website, in writing or over the phone. Your local Citizens Advice can help you put together this information.

If the DWP does not change its decision you can appeal, although this could involve going to a tribunal and may take some time to be heard.

If you’re struggling to make ends meet, you can apply for extra help. Ask the DWP for a hardship payment. This is usually a loan and will be deducted from future Universal Credit payments. You can apply for this payment through the Universal Credit helpline, or by asking at your local Jobcentre Plus office.

You may also be able to apply for financial help from your local council.

For further help working out your budget, negotiating with creditors or checking which benefits you’re entitled to, contact your nearest Citizens Advice.

For more information, go to the Citizens Advice public website at www.citizensadvice.org.uk – please note you can also use the webchat option in most enquiry areas during working hours.

10 11 ST FRANCIS SCHOOL NEWS

Fair Trade

This month our Fair Trade Ambassadors visited St Francis Church Community Café. The children did lots of research before and wrote all their findings down in their notebooks. They then shared their findings and discussed with the church members everything we do as a school that links with Fair Trade. The ambassadors invited the visitors to our School Christmas Fayre and together they came up with some fantastic ideas for events and competitions we could hold in school to support our Fair Trade campaign. Overall they had a brilliant morning and had lots of lovely discussions which have given them a greater understanding of what Fair Trade means.

Gold Success

A huge well done to Maria in Year 5 who recently took part in the Finnish International Badminton Tournament in Helsinki.

Maria took part in the under 11s category and competed in the Children In Need mixed doubles, girls doubles and girls singles. She achieved 2 gold As always, the children of St Francis have medals and one silver been fundraising for this year’s Children in medal. What an amazing Need Appeal. This year the children have achievement. Well done been invited to come into school wearing either pyjamas or their choice of clothes. In order to do this, we asked the children for a donation for Children In Need. The School Council helped collect the money in on the day and this in itself raised just over £400. The children were also invited to take part in the Pudsey colouring competition. This is 20p to enter and again all monies raised go towards our grand total for the charity. We have had some fantastic entries from each year group.

This is always a very hard competition for Mrs Jones to judge. We look forward to announcing the winners.

12 ST FRANCIS SCHOOL NEWS

Swimming Gala

Well done to our 12 boys and girls in Year 4 who took part in a swimming gala at Kings School in Winchester. The gala is part of the annual School Games where the winning school earns a place at The Games in June 2019. The event consists of 8 individual races and 3 team relay races. There was a great atmosphere and each school really cheered on their team. At the half way point St Francis were doing well with some great individual performances. The second part of the event proved challenging and it was great to see the children digging deep and finding every bit of energy they had to try and win their races. At the end of the event St Francis came a very well deserved third place. Mrs Canham was extremely proud of the children and even more so because they won the Sportsmanship award. Well done to all those who took part.

Autumn Watch

As the leaves turn a spectacular array of colours on our trees, it’s a fantastic time of year for the children to be outside studying nature at its best. This month each of our year groups had a day planned into their timetable to spend outside for ‘Autumn Watch Day’. Year 4 spent their morning on a scavenger treasure hunt looking for clues to solve an anagram. Well done to Rowan who was the first person in year 4 to solve it. She unscrambled the letters to reveal the answer ‘autumn leaves falling.’ The children also collected leaves, flowers, twigs and grass to make their own autumn portraits. The day proved to be very enjoyable. Dan from Year 4 said, ‘I loved searching for clues in the woods. It was really exciting to see who would solve the anagram first’. As well as planting daffodil bulbs in the school grounds for next spring, the children finished off the day with biscuits, marshmallows and orange squash. KS1 Christmas Nativity

All our KS1 children are busy rehearsing for their Christmas Nativity which this year is called ‘The Landlords Cat’. It’s always the highlight of our Christmas calendar in school and guaranteed to put everyone in the Christmas mood.

13 KNIGHTWOOD SCHOOL NEWS

KNIGHTWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL

‘Always Learning’ knightwood.hants.sch.uk School Council On 31st October 2018 School Council planted 3500 bulbs in Katrine Crescent. While we were doing it we met Radhi Jaidi, a Tunisian former footballer who played as centre back. He is currently the assistant under-23s coach at Southampton. Please look out for our lovely flowers in the spring. Thank you to Councillor Alan Dowden for inviting the school council to take part.

Year 6 River Trip Recently Y6 went to the River to carry out field work. While we were down there, we measured the width, depth and speed of the river.

To measure the speed we used a leaf and timed it over five metres. We also spotted some river features that we have been learning about in class, such as meander. Written by Y6 Pupils.

14 KNIGHTWOOD SCHOOL NEWS

Children In Need

Children at Knightwood will be celebrating Children In Need by coming to school dressed in spots for a small donation towards the charity. We will let you know how much we raised in the next edition.

The Year 2 children visited the Sea City Christmas Fayre Museum this week as part of their Our Christmas Fayre is on learning. They have been finding out Saturday 1st December about Titanic, its journey and what 11am—2pm

happened to the passengers abroad. Everyone is welcome! There During the trip they got to try on will be lots of fun games and costumes from the time and learnt about prizes to be won. Also a the different people on the ship. They chance to see Father Christmas and let him know are now armed with lots of interesting what you would like for facts that they will enjoy sharing! Christmas.

YR Parent Questionnaire We asked the YR parents for their feedback about the transition process for starting school. Over the years, we have worked hard to ensure the children settle in quickly and happily. 100% of parents agreed the transition mornings in July helped their child feel part of the school. 100% of parents supported the pattern of intake in September and felt the period of time for a staggered start benefitted their child. Overall the feedback was incredibly positive and we would like to thank the parents for taking the time to complete the questionnaire. 15 16 St Francis Christmas Fayre

19 Hall Refurbishment

20 Hall Refurbishment

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our online survey. We had over 270 responses which was fantastic.

As you will hopefully be able to see from the photos, the main hall has been completely refurbished. Sound panels have been added to the ceiling to improve the acoustics. New LED lighting has been added which is more environmentally friendly. The doors that lead to the garden have been replaced with an aluminium frame as the wooden frame that was previously there had rotted. All of the doors have been replaced with oak-coloured doors and all of the notice-boards have been replaced with oak-framed boards with coloured blinds that can be pulled down when the pre-school is not in session. The hall and foyer have also been painted in brighter colours to get rid of the previous black that was throughout the centre. Finally, the floor has been sanded and varnished and looks as good as new again.

The next phase will see us refurbishing rooms 1 and 2 and the corridor that leads to them to match the rest of the centre. We plan to replace the current lights with LED’s, replace the doors, update the flooring and decorate throughout. We are in the process of applying for grants to help cover the cost of the work and were recently successful in securing £1000 from the Parish Council. A big thank you to them for their support.

Once the centre is refurbished we will start to look at delivering some of the ideas that you came up with in the survey.

If you would like to see the photos in colour then please visit the website: valleyparkcommunitycentre.wordpress.com

21 Santa’s visit to Knightwood

Father Christmas will be taking to the streets of Chandler’s Ford in style again this Christmas, thanks to the local Round Table travelling across the area, collecting money for local good causes.

As in previous years, Santa will have a GPS tracker in his sleigh, so you’ll know exactly where he is! Which means if we are not coming to your street this year, you are welcome to see if we are nearby and come and find us! For more details please visit us at: www.facebook.com/RomseyRT

The Santa Sleigh will be travelling through Chandlers Ford, starting in Bellflower Way at 5.15pm then Katrine Crescent on Saturday 8th December. On Saturday 15th December, 5pm start from the junction of Skyswood Road and Morgan Le Fay, then finally on Wednesday 19th December he will be in Sandringham Close, starting at 6pm. Further details are available on our Facebook page.

So all we need now is to see you, so please look out for us as we could be coming past your house!

Last year, more than £4,500 was raised by door-to-door collections across Romsey and Chandler's Ford. The money was used to support a wide range of local charities and other good causes.

IF THE ANSWER IS YES THEN

POP-INS COMPANIONS ARE THE SOLUTION Do you need company, someone to do your light housework, take you shopping, make you some breakfast, read to you because your eye sight is not what it used to be or maybe just sit and have a chat? Most of this we take for granted but if these little things are becoming harder due to illness, operations or plain old advancement of years then we are at your service. So many families have hectic lives that sometimes the older members get forgotten or just not enough time in the day to sit and spend quality time with them. It may not just be the elderly, there may be a person who is ill or recuperating and needs a little extra help or company whilst the family are at work.

Please get in touch for a chat, we both have experience in the care business. Our names are Susan Burgess and Donna Moore.
