Welcome to 2011 at Andover Cricket Club! I said last year that the 2010 season would be challenging both on and off the field. It was perhaps more challenging off than on, for several reasons. Having said that, congratulations must go to the first team for winning Division 2 of the Premier League; a truly brilliant effort by the whole team. The league was nip and tuck all the way through, it was I am sure the team spirit that saw the 1 st XI capture the highest award in the Club’s illustrious history. However, the rest of the teams had to fight to stave off relegation and also withdrawal of the 6 th XI. 2011 will be no easier than 2010 – in fact in many ways it will be more challenging, with more opportunities for us all. Phil Knight takes over the Chairman’s role, Matt Goodman as Vice-Chairman and we welcome back Andy Hooper, as he takes over the Chair of Selectors’ role vacated by Big ‘F’. Again we have a committee that is totally committed to the future of your club, and to the future of youth cricket in Andover. There is no doubt that we have the infrastructure and commitment from players, supporters and volunteers to move this great club forward to the next level over the coming years. We continue to have a flourishing youth section, with over 200 members, and that is the future of our club. We must continue to nurture this talent by volunteering to run coaching sessions and attending coaching courses so we can get the best out of our youth section. It is pleasing to see that our first team consists of so many former ACC colts, which proves how effective our youth section is at nurturing talent. Long may this continue. As ever, the ground at London Road is one of the finest in Hampshire, which was reflected in the league ground ratings last season. We would not have these highly commended facilities if it not for the hard work and dedication of Ken Brown, we must however continue to support him by volunteering our own spare time to help out on the ground. One final point – please, please, please ENJOY your cricket at ACC because that is what we are all about. Play with a smile on your face, in the spirit of the game and then have a drink afterwards! Here’s wishing you all a very enjoyable and rewarding season. I’ll see you at the bar. With best wishes to you all, Tim KEIGHLEY (President – Andover CC) Page 4 Andover CC Locations Andover Cricket Club head quarters are at the London Road Sports Ground (Batchelors Barn Road Andover SP10 1HR), where there are two grounds. After being relegated from division one the previous year and losing 7 key players, the side did not expect to be competing at the top of the table. However, some shrewd signings over the winter, including former Havant run-machine Will Prozesky and New Zealand under 21 star James O’Gorman, and under the new captaincy of Richard Taylor, the side started the season in style. In their first game of the season, they overcame last season’s third place side Burridge in the rain thanks to an excellent knock from Jonty Hadfield, the first of four fifties for him over the course of the season, which was followed by a trouncing 9 wicket win over local rivals Hursley. It was against Hursley that the Andover side witnessed first- hand why Will Prozesky is so highly rated as he struck a quick-fire 90. After two convincing wins, the Andover campaign hit a bump as Hartley Wintney chased down a huge 301 at the compact Hartley ground. This was a shock to the system for the boys but arguably was the ‘kick up the backside’ that they needed because in the next game Andover broke a host of records at Rowledge. After Ali Hooper had demolished the new ball to all parts of the ground on his way to a rapid fifty, Will Prozesky crashed 177 in 90 balls, an Andover record, and led the team to 412-4, a Southern League record. James O’Gorman, Mark Copleston and Ali Hooper all scored back-to-back fifties in those two games as the town side started to light up the Silver league with their powerful hitting. The young Andover side then started a nine game unbeaten run, including some thumping victories. James O’Gorman inspired an excellent team display to see off second placed Hook and Newnham Basics. The kiwi import blasted a chanceless hundred to help post 277 which Hook did not even come close to reaching…… Read the conclusion to the story at 1 st XI Champions on the website or at:- www.andovercricketclub.co.uk/pages/page_14578/1stXIChampions.aspx Page 8 Sponsorship Andover Cricket Club would like to thank the on-going support from everyone that has provided assistance over recent years. • Diocesan Prayer Cycle 1St October - 31St December
Diocesan Prayer Cycle 1st October - 31st December What is a Diocese and how do we work together within it? At its simplest, a Diocese is a geographical area; a region; a collection of parishes, benefices, deaneries, archdeaconries. But it is more than that – it is a gathering of all our communities in mutual support for each other. And as the Diocese of Winchester, we each play our part in the growth of God’s Kingdom committed to our vision of ‘living the mission of Jesus’. This prayer diary helps us to get to know each other better, to find out what is happening across the area and to see how God is working and using us all in his mission across the region. The early church shared good news of what was happening across a wide area, as churches grew, and more people came to know Christ. In their commitment to love and care for one another, prayer lay at the heart of their lives. As we use this Prayer Diary, let’s seek to share that love and care for each other and to rejoice in what God is doing amongst us. This month... how might you pray for young people? For example, you might focus on school leavers, students, youth workers, community centres, young people in trouble... How might you be part of the answer to your prayers? For example, you might make a point of smiling at young people in the street; volunteer for a helpline; get involved with your local Further Education College; support parents you know whose young adult children are struggling..
