Dr. M.K. Kulkarni Registrar, IIPS

Dr. Madhav Kishanrao Kulkarni has been appointed as Registrar of IIPS with effect from 21st October 2008. Prior to joining our Institute he was working as Assistant Director (Confidential) with Union Pub- lic Service Commission (UPSC) in New .

He has done his M.Sc. (Zoology) at Marathwada University, Aurangabad. He acquired his PhD de- gree from the same University in 1994. The topic of his thesis was “A study of Biotoxins of Algal Ori- gin”. He has vast experience on finance, administration, training and preparing university syllabus. He worked for various Staff Selection Commission boards to conduct exams, such as Indian Railway Recruitment Board, B.S.R.B., Medical and UGC’s National Eligibility Test for Lectureship (NET) and State Eligibility Test for Lectureship (SET).

The IIPS library has completed fifty years of its existence. The perfect documentation, regular procurement of demographic information sources, quick and smooth service, adoption of tech- nology etc. are the unique qualities adopted by the IIPS library from the beginning and continued till today. We are presenting a brief reminiscence about our library.

PROFILE OF THE PRESENT LIBRARY The library is housed in a separate building and con- sists of a reading hall with a seating capacity of 80 users at a time and has well furnished conference hall of seating capacity of 40 with computer network con- nectivity to conduct academic programs. In 1960 the centre has shifted on its own campus. Initially it was occupying a portion of the main building (currently occupied by the administration section office, IIPS). On 19th June, 1982 the library has shifted to an independent new building. Databases like, Census of India 1881, 1991 and 2001, DLHS, NUCSAL, NSSO and NFHS are accessible from NASSTOR. Special care has been taken to retrieve 2001 census data as desired by the library user. National Seminar on Methodological Issues in Measuring Millennium Development Goals in Districts of India

With this aim, a two-day seminar was organized at IIPS during 12-13 December, 2008, with the financial assistance from UNDP and UNFPA, New Delhi. The sub-themes for the seminar were, to discuss the progress of MDGs at sub- national level; Estimating Poverty; Knowledge and Utiliza- tion of SRH services; Infant and Child Mortality; Maternal Mortality; and HIV/AIDS estimation. Alcohol, Sexuality and HIV Research and Prevention in India

IIPS is going to organize an International Conference on ‘Alcohol, Sexuality and HIV Re- search and Prevention in India’ during 1-4 August, 2009. This conference, the first of its kind in India, which will examine the role that alcohol plays in contributing to sexuality and sexual risk related to sexually transmitted diseases and HIV. Indian and non-Indian re- searchers working with Indian partners are invited to submit posters for two special inter- active poster sessions on topics related to the conference agenda.
