Buzludzha Monument, Georgi Stoilov, 1981, Hadzhi Dimitar Peak, Bulgaria The Buzludzha Monument was built in 1981 to commemorate the ninetieth anniversary of the Bulgarian Socialist movement. Influenced by the Brutalist style that had become popular in Western Europe, Bulgarian architect Georgi Stoilov designed the monument as an expansive discus- shaped body, with a free-standing steel roof and a dramatic tower. A mix of raw concrete, white marble, colorful interior mosaics, and granite plates adds textural Buzludzha Monument. Photo © ICOMOS variety to the structure, which can be seen Germany from miles away in its mountain-top location. From 1981 to 1989, the monument was one of the most popular sites in Bulgaria, until it closed with the end of communist rule. Local, regional, and national Bulgarian government representatives have recently expressed support for preserving the monument, and the process for listing the building as a national heritage site has already begun. A Getty grant will fund a conservation management plan that builds on this momentum in order to preserve the building for future generations. German preservation specialists and local experts will produce a digital Building Information Model (BIM), a robust online platform that incorporates laser scans, archival materials, and more to create a shared knowledge resource for decision-making about the monument. Another critical aspect of the project will be the exploration of viable options for adaptive reuse of the landmark. Throughout the project, the team will lead an awareness campaign to demonstrate that this national heritage monument is a masterpiece of architectural engineering, an integral part of Bulgarian history, and a public site with great potential for continued use with a new function. All previously known Bulgarian slugs from the Arionidae, Milacidae, Limacidae and Agriolimacidae families have been discussed in this paper. It is based on many years of individual field research, examination of all accessible private and museum collections as well as on critical analysis of the published data. The taxa from families to species are sup plied with synonymy, descriptions of external morphology, anatomy, bionomics, distribution and all records from Bulgaria. It also includes the original key to all species. The illustrative material comprises 118 drawings, including 116 made by the author, and maps of localities on UTM grid. The occurrence of 37 slug species was ascertained, including 1 species (Tandonia pirinia- na) which is quite new for scientists. The occurrence of other 4 species known from publications could not bo established. Basing on the variety of slug fauna two zoogeographical limits were indicated. One separating the Stara Pianina Mountains from south-western massifs (Pirin, Rila, Rodopi, Vitosha. Mountains), the other running across the range of Stara Pianina in the^area of Shipka pass. INTRODUCTION Like other Balkan countries, Bulgaria is an area of Palearctic especially interesting in respect to malacofauna. So far little investigation has been carried out on molluscs of that country and very few papers on slugs (mostly contributions) were published. The papers by B a b o r (1898) and J u r in ić (1906) are the oldest ones.

G. Bonchev Str., Bl. 24, 1113 Sofia, Bulgaria; e-mail: [email protected] (Accepted in revised form: November 2013) Abstract. The Balkan Fold-Thrust Belt is a part of the northern branch of the Alpine-Himalayan orogen in the Balkan Peninsula and represents a Tertiary structure developed along the southern margin of the Moesian Platform. The thrust belt displays of two clearly distinct parts: an eastern one dominated exclusively by thin-skinned thrusting and a western part showing ubiquitous basement involvement. A wide transitional zone is locked between both parts where the structural style is dominantly thin-skinned, but with significant pre-Mesozoic basement involvement in the more internal parts. For the western thick-skinned part the poorly developed syn-orogenic flysch is a characteristic feature that along with the very restricted development of foreland basin suggests a rather limited orogenic shortening compared to the eastern part of the belt. The Tertiary Balkan Fold-Thrust Belt originated mainly through a basement- driven shortening and this is explained by the occurrence of compatibly oriented reactivated basement weak zones of pre-Carboniferous, Jurassic and Early Cretaceous ages. The proposed re-definition of the Balkan thrusts system and internal structure of the allochthons also call for significant re-assessment of the existing schemes of tectonic subdivision.

  • PRESS RELEASE European Experts Put Forward Action Plan to Preserve the Buzludzha Monument
PRESS RELEASE European experts put forward action plan to preserve the Buzludzha Monument 5 December 2018 - Europa Nostra, the leading heritage organisation in Europe, and the European Investment Bank Institute published today a technical and financial report comprising an action plan to preserve and develop the Buzludzha Monument in Bulgaria. The building was listed among the 7 Most Endangered heritage sites in Europe in 2018, following a nomination made by the Buzludzha Project Foundation. The report was formulated on the basis of the outcomes of the three-day expert mission in Bulgaria undertaken from 26-28 September 2018. During the mission a delegation of European specialists in cultural heritage and finance visited the Buzludzha Monument and met with representatives from the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Culture and the Regional Administration of Stara Zagora. According to the experts, “the Buzludzha Monument is a unique engineering achievement” and “a masterpiece of architecture and crafts, with evident European interest due to its historic significance, its peculiar characteristics and its numerous potential future uses”. The Monument is currently abandoned to decay. “The primary purpose of this action plan is the recovery of the Monument, firstly to return it to a safe and usable condition, and then to bring it into a new life, offering the possibility of organising cultural/touristic visits and many other types of events (e.g. seminars, concerts, exhibitions). The basic intention is not to restore it completely back to its original status but to adapt it to new attractive uses. Notwithstanding, it has to be noted that a crucial target of this action plan is to keep the Monument out of future political controversies,” states the report.

A decade later, after the country’s transition to democracy, it was forgotten and abandoned, eventually falling into its current state of ruin. The monument sits atop a hill that was the site for important events in Bulgarian history: the death of a national hero in the wars against the Ottoman Empire; an important battle during the Second World War; and the founding of the Bulgarian Workers’ Social Democratic Party in 1891. As a result, a program associated with memory has always characterized this strategic enclave in the center of the country, with numerous monuments scattered around the area. There were a series of different designs for the definitive monument, which was to sit at the top of the hill. Finally, in 1971, Georgi Stoilov was commissioned to adapt an initial proposal he developed in 1961 to include spacious and climate-controlled interiors to welcome visitors and provide protection from the extreme local winters. Stoilov designed a monument that was intended to be timeless: referencing both classical architecture, like the Pantheon in Rome, and futuristic forms.

Inaugurated in 1981 by the nation’s communist government to commemorate the founding of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party a hundred years earlier, the monument was abandoned and has fallen into disrepair since Bulgaria’s renunciation of communism and the establishment of a democratic government in 1990. Recently, a fierce debate on the proposed restoration of the monument has prompted the government to bequeath the edifice to the Bulgarian Socialist Party, successor of the former Communist Party. However, as of yet no attempts have been made to rehabilitate the structure (see fig. 1). Fig. 1. Schepers, Wim. “The Buzludzha monument within the Stara Planina mountain range.” 2015. JPEG File.
