2015 NAFOW Tour Descriptions 1. Thursday, September 3, 2015: Granville, the Welsh Hills and Liking County Leaving from Columbus, a tour bus will travel east to Granville, Ohio and the beautiful rolling hills of Licking County which has been home to many cultures for thousands of years. Evidence remains from the prehistoric Native Americans known as the Hopewell Moundbuilders, as well as the Welsh immigrants who left their Welsh-named homes and streets scattered throughout the village of Granville and the adjacent Welsh Hills. The tour begins at the museum of the Granville Historical Society where artifacts from the early pioneer families to more modern 1950s displays can be viewed. A short video of the early settlement of the Welsh pioneers will be presented at the museum that includes early photographs of the Welsh Hills and Granville.

The bus tour will continue as we drive through Granville into the countryside, known as the Welsh Hills, with a stop at the historic Welsh Hills Baptist Church and Welsh Hills cemetery. Throughout our journey various historic sites will be viewed from the bus and detailed by the guide, a descendant of the founding fathers of the Welsh Hills.

The bus will proceed to the historic Bryn Du Mansion with its expansive front lawn, once owned by Welshman John Sutphin Jones, whose fortune was built on coal mines and railroads. A casual lunch with soup, fruit, vegetables, finger sandwiches, dessert and beverage will be served at the mansion, leaving time to tour the house and grounds. Following lunch the tour will continue to the Great Circle Earthworks and Museum which includes an interactive video and 1,000- square-foot exhibit. Time will be provided to visit the museum and walk the historic grounds, part of a 2,000 year-old set of geometric earthen enclosures built by the Hopewell Indians. Owned by the Ohio History Connection, staff will be on hand to answer questions and direct you to the best viewing spots. Monday, September 7, 2015: The Welsh Imprint on the Landscape of South East Ohio: The two-hour drive from downtown Columbus to beautiful southern Ohio will take you into the heart of the area of early Welsh settlement by immigrants from Cardiganshire, Wales, in the 1800’s. The tour will focus on the imprint of Welsh culture, religion and industry on the landscape of the Jackson and Gallia Counties. The first stop is at the Bob Evans Farm in Rio Grande, where Farm Manager Ray McKinniss will take us on a personal tour of the farm that was once home to Bob Evans, founder of Bob Evans Farms Inc., and his wife Jewell, for nearly 20 years. We will visit the former Evans home, now The Homestead Museum, built in 1825 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a stagecoach stop and inn in the early days. After touring the restored Log Cabin Village, a lunch catered by the Bob Evans restaurant will be served. After lunch we will stop at the Madog Center for Welsh Studies, located in the Elizabeth Davis House on the campus of the University of Rio Grande, the only center of Welsh Studies in the country. The Director of the Madog Center will discuss the formation of the Welsh Scenic Byway as part of Ohio’s Scenic Byway program.

Next we will travel along a section of the Welsh Scenic Byway and stop to tour Moriah Church, the “Mother” of area Welsh churches and one of 14 Calvinistic Methodist Churches organized by the Welsh immigrants. We will then stop at nearby Evans Cemetery, located in Cooper Hollow Wildlife Reserve, where many of the original 1818 Welsh immigrants in the party of John Jones Tirbach are buried.

The final tour stop is the Welsh-American Heritage Museum, the former Welsh Congregational Church, in Oak Hill. Organized in 1973, the museum is the center of Welsh cultural activities for southern Ohio and is filled with , artifacts from early Welsh pioneers, family histories, church records, and displays on local Welsh culture and history. Madog Center Director will present information on the history of the old Welsh church and how it became one of the few Welsh museums in the country. Meet in lobby 8:45 am, lunch included, return to Hyatt 5:30pm tour $80 per person
