It has been a long and arduous journey, but many individuals have brightened my years of graduate work and made this dissertation possible. I am grateful for the support that everyone has shown. First and foremost, I must thank my two co-chairs, who in their very different ways have followed through and contributed to my dissertation project from inception to completion. Kathryn Babayan generously agreed to work with me at a time of uncertainty and very quickly transformed my view of the discipline of history as well as my readings of historical sources. Her unique approach to the craft of history has in many ways shaped the parameters of this dissertation. She has taught me to analyze my historical sources with sensitivity and attention as well as mentored me through the difficulties of writing. I have long admired her ability to teach both in informal and formal settings without any hint of didacticism. Looking back, every moment with Professor Babayan has been a time of learning—whether about history, methodology, pedagogy or life in general. I am particularly thankful for her ability to nurture collegiality and conversation across fields and disciplines. She inspires with and leaves one to aspire to her creative mind, her passion for scholarship, and her skills as a mentor. For that inspiration I will be forever grateful. Gottfried Hagen from very early on began to inspire me with his questions about my historical subject, which continue to set me on different iii investigative paths. His questions have in many ways helped me crystalize the questions I pose in this dissertation. I am grateful for his meticulous readings of my writing, which have helped me improve my dissertation significantly. I am particularly thankful for the many hours that he patiently spent with me while I struggled to decipher the Ottoman handwritten script of my documents. I will forever be amazed by and aspire to his broad spectrum of knowledge, extending to the most obscure of details (which often prove to be relevant). Needless to say my dissertation has greatly benefited from his immense knowledge of Ottoman history, which he carries with great modesty. My committee members have played important roles throughout my years at Michigan and beyond. Fatma Müge Göçek with her generosity has always been willing to help, whether by going through a piece of my writing or thinking through the macro-picture of my research. I am particularly thankful for her words of encouragement, which have come particularly handy in the anxious moments of graduate studies. My conversations with Ronald Suny over the years have been very helpful in developing a number of ideas that appear in this dissertation. I am thankful for his scholarship, enthusiasm and stamina. I am particularly grateful to Melanie Tanielian for spending the time to help and guide me in thinking through the historiography of the Middle East in the earlier stages of my graduate studies, as well as her careful reading of my writings. Gerard Libaridian is probably the “culprit” in for all of this. My conversations with him dating back to my undergraduate years as well as the inspiration I drew from his own writings, triggered my interest in history. He continued to expand my curiosity during my early years at the University of Michigan. His persistent attentiveness to and questioning of the meanings of words cultivated in me a particular sensitivity towards words and their meanings, which I hope is evident in this dissertation. He spent many hours teaching me to decipher handwritten Armenian iv texts, a skill without which I would not have been able to write this dissertation. In many ways, his work has inspired the questions I have asked here, and I hope it is clear that even if some of my arguments question some of the premises of his work, I would not have been able to make those arguments, if he had not made his own first. I am thankful for the warmth and generosity with which Gerard Libaridian and Nora Nercessian welcomed me to Ann Arbor and made me feel at home in their house in Ann Arbor and Cambridge. I would particularly like to thank Nora Nercessian for the many conversations we have had that has helped me navigate the intricacies of life and academia. A number of other professors have been critical during my graduate studies. Valerie Kivelson through her class on the Russian Empire opened my eyes and woke my curiosity about social history. Kevork Bardakjian introduced me to the works of Garegin Srvandzteants‘ and Yeremia Tevkants‘, which have been critical to my dissertation. During my time at Michigan the Armenian Studies Program (ASP) has been crucial to my intellectual growth. I would like to particularly thank Vahram Danielian, who during my first year in Ann Arbor helped me through some difficult times, and who has been a great friend and interlocutor ever since. I would also like to thank Murat Cankara, who spent many hours with me reading through Armeno-Turkish texts, and later reading through and commenting on parts of my dissertation. My many conversations with Christopher Sheklian, as well as his engaged readings of some of my chapters v have been crucial in my rethinking of different concepts and ideas. Michael Pifer was one of my earliest acquaintances in Ann Arbor, and has persistently amazed me with his kind soul and sharp mind. Our conversations and his careful readings of my writings have significantly contributed to this dissertation. I feel truly lucky to have him as a peer and a friend. There are a great number of other friends and colleagues in and outside of Michigan who have been crucial in my journey and in my intellectual growth. During my first year at Michigan, shortly after I met Haydar Darıcı, we started talking as if we were long-lost friends. I will always miss our wide-ranging conversations about the world and our dissertations. Zozan Pehlivan, whom I got to know better in the Ottoman archives, has become a true friend and a strong source of support and encouragement, as well as vital comments and information for my dissertation. I would particularly like to thank Neveser Köker who has been a dear friend and has inspired me through her work and by being the amazing and smart person that she is. Our friendship and collaboration have meant a lot to me. Seçil Binboga too has been a helpful interlocutor and friend. I am truly grateful for my many collaborations with Tolga Yaşar Cora, which have always been learning experiences. He has been a friend and colleague, whose mind I often like to pick and whose dedication and hard work I truly respect. Of course, I also have to thank Ali Sipahi for introducing me to Tolga, and for pushing us to undertake our book project, which generated many important conversations among us. Whether the subject was theory, history or politics, I have particularly enjoyed the ability to joke with Ali over our disagreements. My conversastions with Richard Antaramian in the beginning of my graduate studies helped shape some of my views on Ottoman Armenian history and historiography. Indeed, his own dissertation—one of the very few works discussing nineteenth-century Van in English and within vi Ottoman historiography—has been crucial for my own dissertation. Friends and colleagues who have commented on different parts of my dissertation, and with whom I have had many helpful conversations, include Toygun Altıntaş and Annie Greene. The genesis of the Armenian nation has been examined in an earlier Study.1 Its nucleus, succeeding to the role of the Yannic nucleus ot Urartu, was the 'proto-Armenian,T Hayasa-Phrygian, people-state,2 which at first oc- cupied only a small section of the former Urartian, or subsequent Armenian, territory. And it was, precisely, of the expansion of this people-state over that territory, and of its blending with the remaining Urartians and other proto- Caucasians that the Armenian nation was born. That expansion proceeded from the earliest proto-Armenian settlement in the basin of the Arsanias (East- ern Euphrates) up the Euphrates, to the valley of the upper Tigris, and espe- cially to that of the Araxes, which is the central Armenian plain.3 This expand- ing proto-Armenian nucleus formed a separate satrapy in the Iranian empire, while the rest of the inhabitants of the Armenian Plateau, both the remaining Urartians and other proto-Caucasians, were included in several other satrapies.* Between Herodotus's day and the year 401, when the Ten Thousand passed through it, the land of the proto-Armenians had become so enlarged as to form, in addition to the Satrapy of Armenia, also the trans-Euphratensian vice-Sa- trapy of West Armenia.5 This division subsisted in the Hellenistic phase, as that between Greater Armenia and Lesser Armenia.

On that day, Grigoris Balakian, a high-ranking Armenian priest, was among the 250 Armenian religious, political, and cultural leaders who were arrested in Constantinople and sent 200 miles east to Chankiri to await their fate. While most of his companions were killed or died during the genocide, Balakian survived both the genocide and World War I. When the war ended in 1918, he started to write Armenian Golgotha. This is an astonishing memoir and meditation on his survival and on the course of the mass murder that destroyed more than half of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire.

The Armenian government led by Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian (HHK) has comprised the Republi- can Party, Prosperous Armenia and Rule of Law since 21st March 2008. The Armenian Revolutionary Federation was a member of the government coalition until 2009 before leaving it because of its opposition to the government’s foreign policy. On 12th February last the Armenians elected their local representatives. The Republican Party led by President of the Republic Serzh Sarkisian won 33 of the 39 country’s towns. The opposition clai- med that there had been electoral fraud. The legislative campaign started on 8th April and will end on 4th May. 238 people working in Arme- nia’s embassies or consulates will be able to vote on 27th April and 1st May.     Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Beau Bothwell All rights reserved ABSTRACT Song, State, Sawa: Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell This dissertation is a study of popular music and state-controlled radio broadcasting in the Arabic-speaking world, focusing on Syria and the Syrian radioscape, and a set of American stations named Radio Sawa. I examine American and Syrian politically directed broadcasts as multi-faceted objects around which broadcasters and listeners often differ not only in goals, operating assumptions, and political beliefs, but also in how they fundamentally conceptualize the practice of listening to the radio. Beginning with the history of international broadcasting in the Middle East, I analyze the institutional theories under which music is employed as a tool of American and Syrian policy, the imagined youths to whom the musical messages are addressed, and the actual sonic content tasked with political persuasion. At the reception side of the broadcaster-listener interaction, this dissertation addresses the auditory practices, histories of radio, and theories of music through which listeners in the sonic environment of Damascus, Syria create locally relevant meaning out of music and radio. Drawing on theories of listening and communication developed in historical musicology and ethnomusicology, science and technology studies, and recent transnational ethnographic and media studies, as well as on theories of listening developed in the Arabic public discourse about popular music, my dissertation outlines the intersection of the hypothetical listeners defined by the US and Syrian governments in their efforts to use music for political ends, and the actual people who turn on the radio to hear the music.

As a result of the study carried out on 10 genotypes; fruit weights were found between 198.8 and 366.0 g, seed hardness of the fruit was medium-hard in eight genotypes, hard in two genotypes, aril yield ranged from 58.1 to 70.0% and fruit juice volume was between 63.9 and 135.7 ml. The upper peel color was purple in four genotypes, pink-red in two genotypes, orange-red in one genotype and orange in three genotypes. The bottom peel color is orange-red in seven genotypes and orange in three genotypes. Aril color was dark purple in three genotypes, purple in two genotypes, medium red in two genotypes and pink-red in three genotypes. The acid content was found to be between 0.65 and 1.21% and the amount of total soluable solid (TSS) varied between 15.0 and 21.0%.

Present-day Armenia is bounded by Georgia to the north, Iran to the south-east, Azerbaijan to the east and Turkey to the west. From 1920 to 1991 Armenia was a Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR, but historically its land encompassed a much greater area including parts of all present-day bordering countries (see fig.). At its greatest extent it occupied the plateau covering most of what is now central and eastern Turkey (c. 300,000 sq. km) bounded on the north by the Pontic Range and on the south by the Taurus and Kurdistan mountains. During the 11th century another Armenian state was formed to the west of Historic Armenia on the Cilician plain in south-east Asia Minor, bounded by the Taurus Mountains on the west and the Amanus (Nur) Mountains on the east. Its strategic location between East and West made Historic or Greater Armenia an important country to control, and for centuries it was a battlefield in the struggle for power between surrounding empires. Periods of domination and division have alternated with centuries of independence, during which the country was divided into one or more kingdoms. Content is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence eISSN: 2213-0624 The Cost of Memorializing: Analyzing Armenian Genocide Memorials and Commemorations in the Republic of Armenia and in the Diaspora Sabrina Papazian HCM 7: 55–86 DOI: 10.18352/hcm.534 Abstract In April of 1965 thousands of Armenians gathered in Yerevan and Los Angeles, demanding global recognition of and remembrance for the Armenian Genocide after fifty years of silence. Since then, over 200 memorials have been built around the world commemorating the vic- tims of the Genocide and have been the centre of hundreds of marches, vigils and commemorative events. This article analyzes the visual forms and semiotic natures of three Armenian Genocide memorials in Armenia, France and the United States and the commemoration prac- tices that surround them to compare and contrast how the Genocide is being memorialized in different Armenian communities. In doing so, this article questions the long-term effects commemorations have on an overall transnational Armenian community. Ultimately, it appears that calls for Armenian Genocide recognition unwittingly categorize the global Armenian community as eternal victims, impeding the develop- ment of both the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian diaspora.
