(Dis)Believing and Belonging: Investigating the Narratives of Young British Atheists1
(Dis)Believing and Belonging: Investigating the Narratives of Young British Atheists1 REBECCA CATTO Coventry University JANET ECCLES Independent Researcher Abstract The development and public prominence of the ‘New Atheism’ in the West, particularly the UK and USA, since the millennium has occasioned considerable growth in the study of ‘non-religion and secularity’. Such work is uncovering the variety and complexity of associated categories, different public figures, arguments and organi- zations involved. There has been a concomitant increase in research on youth and religion. As yet, however, little is known about young people who self-identify as atheist, though the statistics indicate that in Britain they are the cohort most likely to select ‘No religion’ in surveys. This article addresses this gap with presentation of data gathered with young British people who describe themselves as atheists. Atheism is a multifaceted identity for these young people developed over time and through experience. Disbelief in God and other non-empirical propositions such as in an afterlife and the efficacy of homeopathy and belief in progress through science, equality and freedom are central to their narratives. Hence belief is taken as central to the sociological study of atheism, but understood as formed and performed in relationships in which emotions play a key role. In the late modern context of contemporary Britain, these young people are far from amoral individualists. We employ current theorizing about the sacred to help understand respondents’ belief and value-oriented non-religious identities in context. Keywords: Atheism, Youth, UK, Belief, Sacred Phil Zuckerman (2010b, vii) notes that for decades British sociologist Colin Campbell’s call for a widespread analysis of irreligion went largely un- heeded (Campbell 1971). -

SPECIFICALLY, I EXPLORE HOW THE SOUNDS OF LAUGHTER – AS DISSEMINATED BY THE PODCAST – CAN LEAD TO EXPLOSIONS OF EMOTION IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE; SETTING THE BODY IN MOTION AND LEADING TO NEW WAYS OF THINKING, FEELING AND BEING. WHILE THESE PUBLIC EXPLOSIONS OF EMOTION CAN BE TRANSGRESSIVE, I POSTULATE THAT THEY CAN ALSO RELIEVE SOME OF THE TENSION CREATED BY THE NEGATIVE AFFECTS SWIRLING AROUND FEMINISM, WHICH, ACCORDING TO AHMED, “IS ALWAYS ASSUMED TO BE BRINGING OTHERS DOWN” (AHMED, 2010:65). USING GUATTARI’S IDEAS ON THE PRODUCTION OF SUBJECTIVATION, I ARGUE THAT THESE EXPLOSIONS CAN INTENSIFY THE EMERGENCE OF A GLOBAL, INTERSECTIONAL FEMINIST COMMUNITY, PROVOKING A CONSIDERATION OF HOW PODCASTS SUCH AS THE GUILTY FEMINIST COULD EXTEND OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND ONLINE ACTIVISM WITHIN CONTEMPORARY FEMINISMS. -

Theatre Hosting Events in the Main Auditorium, Studio Theatre and Forecourt
box office: 01234 362337 welcome www.bedfringe.com Welcome to your 10th anniversary Fringe Festival… Over 100 events under 1 roof… in 10 days! #itsinthecan We made it! We can’t believe it’s been ten years since we started back in 2007… the days before Twitter… Facebook was just hitting our screens and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released… I know this because half the front of house team disappeared one morning heading in the direction of Waterstones! To date we have programmed just under 825 shows. That’s over 2000 performers! That puts Bedfringe in the top five largest Fringe Festivals in the country. This year we are running exclusively from The Quarry Theatre hosting events in the main auditorium, studio theatre and forecourt. Highlights for me are Bane 4, Paul Foot, WiFi Wars and Mitch Benn. However… take a risk and see something you might not usually choose to see… that’s what it’s all about. Catch one or two of our world premier shows and be amongst the person to see the next big name in comedy! We are hosting over 40 Edinburgh shows plus more Photo credit: Aidan Huxford than 30 shows from local performers so hopefully there is something James & Fiona for everyone during this special year. James Pharaoh: Festival Director ‘Sum up Bedfringe in about 200 words’ were the instructions I was given from Mr Pharaoh. I tried, but failed many times so instead this is what Bedfringe means to me. I started back in 2007 as a lowly technician, with little knowledge of lighting desks and even less of what a fringe festival was. -
Edinburgh Festival News Snippets
Home Festival History News Pre-Festival Stuff Festival Time Newbie? Witterings Links Site Map News Snippets - August 2008 to August 2009 2007-2008 | 2006-2007 Fringe 2009 ticket sales and other statistics posted September 1st, 2009. Initial statistics have been put out by the Fringe Society for the 2009 festival. They are summarised in The Guardian and The Scotsman. The headline figure is a new record of 1.85m tickets sold. This beats the previous record of 1.7m in 2007 by 9%. Other stats include: 18,901 performers in 34,265 performances of 2,098 shows; comedy made up 35% of the overall programme, theatre 28% and music 16%. While there is no breakdown of audience figures so far the feedback from some venues appears to indicate that increases in attendances at comedy shows may well be attributable to the Scots. As previously stated, despite apprehension in various quarters buoyant ticket sales are not totally unexpected this year. 2010 and 2011 will be more problematic years as the effects of the recession impact on employment numbers. Comedy is least likely to be affected as its audience tends to be younger and is more likely to have the necessary disposable income. Fringe venues complain about costs posted August 30th, 2009. The Scotsman reported that Fringe chief, Kath Mainland, is to meet venue chiefs who are concerned about rising costs and the future viability of medium-sized venues. More on the expense of putting on shows at the festival posted August 30th, 2009. This time it is Tommy Sheppard, director of The Stand Comedy Club, writing in The Scotsman on the difficulties faced by comedians. -
