Tara Douglas Tales of the Tribes: Animation as a Tool for Indigenous Representation Abstract In India animation practice is almost completely dominated by commercial production. Much of this is outsourced to India by foreign companies, but even the animation that is produced for national broadcast shows characteristics of animation design of Western origination with regard to content, presentation and art style. Consequently, modes of commercially driven animation are dictating the expectations of the medium in India, and have become widely regarded as the normative standard. The forces of global expansion have accelerated the arrival of commercial media entertainment into the various peripheral regions of India. The indigenous communities there have been represented by outsiders since colonial times and have no representation of their own in the medium of animation. As a consequence, young indigenous people are growing up with media entertainment that has no cultural relevance to them. It is challenging their identities and through this process, they are losing touch with their own cultural heritage. In this research I set out to investigate whether animation is a medium that can be used to retell indigenous folktales and reconnect young indigenous audiences to their traditional narratives. The development and production of a sample collection of short animation films, Tales of the Tribes through participatory film-making practice presents case studies of the process of collaborating with indigenous artists and cultural practitioners from selected communities to examine these issues of representation and to investigate how adaptation can be negotiated from oral to audio visual forms of cultural expression. i The contribution to knowledge that has emerged from this research shows how the medium of animation can have a significant role for communication within and between cultures. Young indigenous collaborators are receptive to adapting their traditional narratives to the animation medium and participatory practice based on local content engages their contribution. The practice has demonstrated that the possibilities for experimentation with local content and art forms can work to reconnect the young generation with existing cultural forms and practices. In addition, the research shows that young animators in India also appreciate opportunities to experiment with little known Indian content and folk art forms. My research delivers a practical model for animation practitioners to collaborate ethically with local communities and organisations within the context of media representation. For indigenous artists to work alongside animation practitioners to re- imagine their narratives through animation film-making empowers the voices of indigenous young people in India to tell their own story. ii Acknowledgements Thank-you to my academic supervisors, Bronwen Thomas and Chindu Sreedharan and to my industrial supervisor Leslie MacKenzie, for their guidance and support. The Galo population estimated at 80,597 (2001 census) makes them the one of the most populous tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. Poka, a traditional rice wine plays an important role in the socio-cultural life of the Galo tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. It is consumed during most of the festive occa- sions and celebrations. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development, North East Unit, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh Abstract: The present study has documented the various ethno-medicinal plants used by Galo community of West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. A well-designed questionnaire based survey was conducted in the study area to collect ethnomedicinal plants information. A total of 36 plant species belonging to 20 families and 31 genera were used by Galo Community for various ethnobotanical purposes, among these species 6 were trees, 9 shrubs and 21 herbaceous species. Maximum number of species were recorded from family Asteraceae (6 spp.), followed by Zingiberaceae (4 spp.), Solanaceae, Urticaceae and Araceae (3 spp. each). For preparation of herbal medicine, Galo people mostly they use leave (49%) followed by stem (15%), fruits (13%), Root/Rhizome (13 %), Whole plant (5%) and flower (5%) of the plants. These plant parts are used for curing various common diseases such as diabetes, sinusitis, burn, cut, cough and cold, fever, joint pain, ear and eye problem etc. Some important medicinal plant species are facing threat due to habitat degradation, and unsustainable harvesting in the study area.

    Animating Race The Production and Ascription of Asian-ness in the Animation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra Francis M. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 2 Abstract How and by what means is race ascribed to an animated body? My thesis addresses this question by reconstructing the production narratives around the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-08) and its sequel The Legend of Korra (2012-14). Through original and preexisting interviews, I determine how the ascription of race occurs at every stage of production. To do so, I triangulate theories related to race as a social construct, using a definition composed by sociologists Matthew Desmond and Mustafa Emirbayer; re-presentations of the body in animation, drawing upon art historian Nicholas Mirzoeff’s concept of the bodyscape; and the cinematic voice as described by film scholars Rick Altman, Mary Ann Doane, Michel Chion, and Gianluca Sergi. Even production processes not directly related to character design, animation, or performance contribute to the ascription of race. Therefore, this thesis also references writings on culture, such as those on cultural appropriation, cultural flow/traffic, and transculturation; fantasy, an impulse to break away from mimesis; and realist animation conventions, which relates to Paul Wells’ concept of hyper-realism.
