It is the home to 110 ethnic groups (sub-tribes) of great cultural diversity, but in many respects there is an overall uniformity. The Galo population estimated at 80,597 (2001 census) makes them the one of the most populous tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. Poka, a traditional rice wine plays an important role in the socio-cultural life of the Galo tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. It is consumed during most of the festive occa- sions and celebrations. Bamboo forms a part of the daily life of the indigenous inhabitants of the state and is a source of food, raw materials for construction, handicrafts, agricultural implements and other items of daily use. Due to its versatile uses, bamboo is closely associated with the livelihood of the people, especially in rural areas. This study presents the utilization of bamboo for different purposes by the Adi, Galo and Apatani which are among the major tribes of Arunachal Pradesh. The study also highlights the future prospects of bamboo for rural livelihood, food and nutritional security and prescribed some recommendations for development of bamboo based industries through sustainable utilization of bamboo resources and skill development of the local communities of the state. Ethnically, the Digaru Mishmi tribe (inhabitants) of the district adopted the traditional way of consuming these rich ethnobotanical resources to fulfill their daily nutrition & health care. These plants have traditionally occupied an important position in their socio-cultural, spiritual and health aspects of the rural tribal lives. So, the consumption of wild edible plants as a food source has been an integral part of the indigenous people’s culture. To get an insight into the Digaru Mishmi people’s way of lifestyle, the present study was conducted to explore, identify & document the ethno botany of the Digaru Mishmi people and to record their unique knowledge about wild edible plants. -

ISSN-0976-1276 Visit us : www.researchjournal.co.in RESEARCH PAPER FOOD SCIENCE Volume 10 | Issue 2 | October, 2019 | 197-202 RESEARCH JOURNAL DOI : 10.15740/HAS/FSRJ/10.2/197-202 Diverse ethnic food practices of the Galo tribe in Arunachal Pradesh Urmimala Baruah and Ruma Bhattacharyya The present study has been undertaken to to study the diverse ethnic food practices of the Galo tribe of Arunachal Pradesh.The present study was conducted in 20 villages of Tirbin and Kangku circle of West Siang district during the year 2017. 200 households i.e. 10 households in each village was purposively selected for the study. The food practices of the Galo tribe ranges from the use of fermented bamboo shoot to edible wild plants and insects which are mostly collected by the woman folk of this community from the jungles. The prevailing knowledge systems of diverse ethnic food practices are passed on generations after generations by the elder members of this community. However the younger generations lack interests in learning those traditional food systems which is great threat to the existence of those traditional food system as well as to the eco-culture of the Galo tribe. Therefore, it is important on the part of the government to plan and implement certain policies to preserve those valuable traditional food practices of the Galo tribe thereby contributing to the overall health and well being of the people belonging to this tribe in particular and to the mankind as a whole. It has a geographical area of 83,743 sq. km., which constitutes 2.54%o of the total area of the country, with rugged terrain of deep valleys and high mountains of the Eastern Himalayan Ranges. The wide ranging elevations from about 100 m adjoining Assam plains with Shiwalik Hill Ranges to a great height of 7000 m in the Greater Himalayas with snow capped peaks give rise to wide variations in topography, soil, river systems (Siang, Kameng, Subansiri, Lohit, Tirap, Dibang and their tributaries), climatic conditions with varying temperature, rainfall, humidity and accompanied diverse vegetation with unparallel bio-diversity of flora and fauna. Of the total geographical area, about l2oh is under permanent snow cover and glaciers. Rainfall varies from1000 mm in the higher reaches to 5750 mm in the foothill areas, spread over 8-9 months except drier days in winter. -

The indoor and outdoor exhibitions of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya are complementary to each other. Ethnographical museum, as we understand today, is an institution for collection, preservation, study and exhibition of man’s own works which is important for education as well as for cultural growth (IGRMS, Souvenir, 2005). In IGRMS, we can find tangible culture in two types of exhibition namely – (a) The Indoor Museum (Veethi Sankul) and (b) Open –Air exhibition. These exhibitions aim to present the cohesive life styles and culture of various ethnic communities living in different parts of our country. In the following, an attempt has been made to document the tangible and intangible culture preserved in the museum with its context. I. INTRODUCTION A museum is defined as “a non - profit making permanent institution, in the service of the society and its development and open to the public, which acquires, conserves, communicates and exhibits, researches for the purpose of study, education and enjoyment, material evidence of men and his environment". The word ethnography is derived from the Greek (ethnos), meaning a company, later a people, nation and graphy meaning field of study. -

The processing and preparation of ethnic foods not only demonstrate the creativity and treasure of food heritage of tribal women but also their incremental learning to sustain the life and ecosystem as a whole. Looking to the diversities in ethnic foods, an attempt has been made to explore the ethnic foods made of local soybean, bamboo shoot, tree bean, lai patta (leafy mustard) and rai (Brassica juncea (Linn.) Czern. & Coss.) from different selected tribes of Northeast India. Tribal women of Northeastern region have a wide range of variability in the ethnic foods made of soybean, bamboo shoot, lai patta, tree bean and rai. In each state, the processing method of these foods is somewhat different based on the culture, variability in the materials used in the food, climate and overall knowledge of the processing and preparation. The foods used in the dietary system were found to be nutritionally rich and culturally important in various festivals and ceremonies. Ethnic foods prepared and consumed by women can not be seen in the isolated mode, instead it is a complex dynamics in which nutrition, health, food security, culture, ethics, subsistence economy and ecological sustainability are integral components. -

The strength of the tribes is that they are able to successfully cling to the primal skills and natural simplicity. Their creations speak of evolutions over time, and the arts and crafts created by them have timeless appeal. The primal instinct in all of us is evoked whenever we come across the crudest tribal handicrafts. The present case study was conducted during August and September 2019 and the study included combination of methods such as research viz., household survey of 44 Adi families, followed by a focused group discussion was adopted and also documented the artifacts of Adi tribe in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, India. Further, the study also aimed at unearthing the kinds of possible threats that arise due to globalization which may affect traditional craftsmanship. Multitudinal sets of traditional artifacts created out of indigenous wisdom have been documented which affirm that the life of the Adi is intertwined with the forest products especially bamboo, canes and their products.
