  • The Missing Link of Shōjo Manga History : the Changes in 60S Shōjo Manga As Seen Through the Magazine Shūkan Margaret
京都精華大学紀要 第四十九号 ― 5 ― The missing link of shōjo manga history : the changes in 60s shōjo manga as seen through the magazine Shūkan Margaret Kálovics Dalma Introduction The worldwide success of manga can be partly attributed to the fact that Japanese comics provide a wide range of reading materials for girls. However even though shōjo manga existed for as long as shōnen manga, there are periods in the history of the genre we hardly know anything about. Shōjo manga research tends to focus on gender and due to that centers mainly on the 1970s and the manga of the Magnifi cent 49ers (Hana no 24-nen gumi ), a group of female artists born around 1949 including Hagio Moto, Ōshima Yumiko, Takemiya Keiko and Yamagishi Ryōko, who became famous for their literary style and addressing gender and sexuality in their works.1 This approach has resulted in many works being left out from the scope of research, be they from preceding periods or contemporary mainstream titles. The lack of detailed analysis of the 20 years of postwar shōjo manga up till the 70s can lead one to believe the 49ers singlehandedly created the genre out of nothing, when in reality by the time they appeared shōjo manga was a diverse and successful genre which sold over a million of its most popular magazines.2 In an attempt at shōjo manga historiography the fi rst part of this paper analyzes the discourse surrounding the genre, and fi nds reasons in publication history for the obscuring of̶among others̶ the 1960s of shōjo manga. The second part of the essay contrasts assumptions about 60s shōjo manga with actual facts based on fi ndings from an ongoing project, in which I examined so far over 250 issues of the magazine Shūkan Margaret published between 1963 and 1970, from the collection of the Kyoto International Manga Museum and the National Diet Library.

  • Listening to TV Sound Now and Later
Theorizing TV Sound: Listening to TV Sound Now and Later Rose Bridges, University of Texas at Austin Like other forms of television and film media, Japanese anime has seen a recent increase in the trend of remakes and reboots of older, beloved franchises. Arguably this began with a desire to reboot anime based on ongoing manga (comics) once the manga finished, and the anime was able to follow its ending rather than coming up with its own. The success of series like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009-2011) and the second Hunter x Hunter (2011-2014) paved the way for more of these, such as Sailor Moon Crystal (2014-2016) and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (2012-). These series have emphasized fan desire for faithfulness to their source material, often to the point of reflecting the visual aesthetics of manga (especially in the cases of Sailor Moon or Jojo's). However, this trend has diversified and branched out to allow more creative reboots, often from auteur directors, of longstanding franchises. The two most notable of these include recent anime television series of the Lupin III franchise, and Go Nagai's frequently adapted Devilman manga series. These are the 2011 anime series Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and the 2018 Devilman Crybaby. Both are reboots that make textual (or closer-to-textual) subtextual themes about gender and sexuality in the earlier works, as well as more complicated examinations of moralities. Both are the works of relatively singular directorial voices, with unique relationships to these ideas as well as visual and sonic aesthetics.

Since I was a kid I had a big passion for drawing, creating my own stories and characters and it was at the age of 15 that I began to consider a career focu- sed on visual arts and communication, that’s why a took a four years course of manga style drawing at Association ACIA (Asociación Cultural para la Investi- gación sobre Asia). Thanks to this experience I finally decided to study Animation and Visual Effects in the college Centro Universitario Incarnate Word (CIW) also located in Méxi- co City. I stand out in the Pre-Production field, I do thumbnails, storyboards, screenplays and character design; I also enjoy to do 2D animation. As for my personal style and interests, I’m strongly influenced by anime, car- toons, videogames, manga, mythology, YA books and webcomics. ABSTRACT POLITICAL SCIENCE FULLER, FRANK R. B.A. OGLETHORPE U1JIVERSITY, 2000 M.S. GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, 2001 THE ATOMIC BOMB: REFLECTIONS IN JAPANESE MANGA AND ANIME Committee Chair: Robert B. DeJanes, Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This study examines post-World War II “anime” and manga based on the bomb’s after-effects and changes in Japanese mindsets resulting from the War, especially as inspired by Osamu Tezuka and later artists influenced by his works. This study theorized that Japanese political culture elements, through particular plotlines, could be traced in manga and anime themes carrying hidden messages repeatedly referencing the bomb’s effects on Japan, citing Tezuka’s influence, in the 1945-65 and 1985-95 periods, in the post-apocalyptic, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Case studies were used to qualitatively assess data for historical evidence of Tezuka’s influence across specific genres, from scholarly studies and reviews of manga. comics, and related media. Evidence ofTezuka-inspired themes, such as hope out of endless devastation (the phoenix analogy) and man’s destructive obsession with technology by conquering nature (dependent variables), were analyzed from a comparativist, historical viewpoint, as influenced by atomic bomb-related themes. The researcher explains the Japanese fascination with technology and why many anime show status quo disagreements. Japan absorbed trauma from the bomb, was invaded by foreigners, and faced a complete overhaul. Post-war, the economy grew rapidly, but Japan must reduce rigidity and social conformity.
