The primary purposes of this entity is the advancement of religion and spirituality understanding and to eliminate prejudice and discrimination based upon personal beliefs. Mission Statement: The mission of Crossroads Universal is to foster pride in personal Pagan identity through education, community charity, & activism. Defining the Mission Statement: We try to keep our purpose balanced through the inspirations of the elements of: Air: Education We need to be able to practice our personal spiritual beliefs openly. We help accomplish this through giving accurate information to the public of who we are and what we do & not do. Earth: Community We need to be able to practice our personal spiritual beliefs openly with the help of others in our local Pagan community. We must weave networking webs in our cities, our towns, our rural areas. We need these webs to support one another. This support will show the masses the we are not restricting our prac- tices to a few isolated weirdos, but that we are a growing congrega- tion of people who adhere to a faith that, while different, is as valid as their own. Water: Charity We know that what we do, returns to us. We must demonstrate this by offering compassion to our communities where it is needed. When we share our own abundance, we show that we trust the Gods to share abundance with us. Fire: Activism People are not going to go out of their way to find out what Pagans are really about. We have to have the courage to act upon our convictions & do what we need to do to make sure ignorance is kept to a minimum by providing a viable example of true pagan faith. A SPECIAL Thank You to all of our friends that have volunteered their time to make 2016 CLE-PPD a major SUCCESS: Carrie, Christina, Culsa, Don, Emily, Jerry, Matt, Melissa, Rowan, and many many more! 2016 Workshops & Their Presenters Saturday 8/27/2016 Christin Keck has been a practicing diviner, reader, and talisman-maker for the past 30 years. In 2010 I graduated with my BSN and have worked as an RN in the Cleveland area for the last five years. Navigating the line between magic and medicine has been a primary theme in the course of my career, and I am excited to have a chance to discuss this with my fellow Pagans at PPD this year. Blessed be. Where Medicine and Magic Meet: Western medicine and magic have a long tangled history. Some of us have become wary of modern medicine, and modern medicine has certainly become skeptical of magic. It is crucial, however, that the two practices recognize their common ground and work together for the best possible patient outcomes. This workshop seeks to explore that history, why it is important to find a healthcare provider whom you can trust, and the ways in which we are already bridging those gaps. An island continent of vast red deserts, shady eucalyptus groves, meandering rivers, high plains, coastal swamps, and turquoise oceans, her indigenous people know her very, very well. In their lore, they have always been there, traveling across sacred landscapes alive with songs and sto- ries that tell where to hunt and camp, what to eat, where to find water, who to marry, how to care for children and family, and how to honor the Ances- tors. On each step of the journey, the Ancestors of the Dreamtime guide their footsteps. The founders of this church looked at the religion that Robert Heinlein created in his science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land and decided to make it a reality. This puts them squarely in the company of What Carole Cusack has termed “invented religions.” These are religions that seek validity in works that are accepted as fiction. The Church of All Worlds, noW over fifty years old, has groWn beyond its science fiction roots, adopting practices and beliefs that have made them an influential part of the modern Pagan movement. Though fiction no longer plays as strong a role in their practice, they have remained dedicated to an ethic of invention. Through ethnographic research With Church members in Northern California, this paper explores hoW this ethic of invention manifests in official Church history, the personal relationships of members, and the creation of public rituals.

CONCLUSION: THE FUTURE OF Hyper-real RELIGIONS? Adam Possamai Introduction In 2004, Oberon Zell-Ravenheart, a key leader of the Church of All Worlds, founded the Grey School of Wizardry, in which the education system draws from the Harry Potter fictions (Cusack 2010). This school is virtual and welcomes students from eleven to eighteen years old, and adults who want to go back to ‘high school’ for a different type of education. It is a site created to help adult Neo-Pagans, and children of Neo-Pagans, to access a more Pagan-focused teaching. The school’s website claims: [b]esides its academic focus, the Grey School students and faculty provide a thriving interactive magickal community. Youth students (ages 11–17) are sorted into Elemental ‘Houses’ (Salamanders, Gnomes, Undines, and Sylphs) based on their astrological Sun sign, while adult students (age 18 and older) are likewise directed into Elemental ‘Lodges’ (Flames, Stones, Waters, and Winds). These compete via academic credits and merit points for the ‘House Hat’ and the ‘Lodge Cup’, which are awarded semi-annually at the Equinoxes. Each House and Lodge has a faculty Head to moderate discussions, intro- duce activities, etc. Each House and Lodge also has a student Prefect, a posi- tion awarded to students who exemplify academics, attitude, and enthusiasm. The student body is further led by House and Lodge Captains; selected from the pool of experienced Prefects, the Captains are an esteemed combination of student body president and ‘Head Boy/Girl’. The Administrative Dean of Students oversees all student activities. The Grey School works via a series of interactive school pages and forums.

Invented Religions Imagination, Fiction and Faith Carole M. Cusack INVENTED RELIGIONS Utilizing contemporary scholarship on secularization, individualism, and consumer capitalism, this book explores religious movements founded in the West which are intentionally fictional: Discordianism, the Church of All Worlds, the Church of the SubGenius, and Jediism. Their continued appeal and success, principally in America but gaining wider audience through the 1980s and 1990s, is chiefly as a result of underground publishing and the internet. This book deals with immensely popular subject matter: Jediism developed from George Lucas’ Star Wars films; the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, founded by 26-year-old student Bobby Henderson in 2005 as a protest against the teaching of Intelligent Design in schools; Discordianism and the Church of the SubGenius which retain strong followings and participation rates among college students. The Church of All Worlds’ focus on Gaia theology and environmental issues makes it a popular focus of attention. The continued success of these groups of Invented Religions provide a unique opportunity to explore the nature of late/post-modern religious forms, including the use of fiction as part of a bricolage for spirituality, identity-formation, and personal orientation. Archived at ContERN Repository for Self-Archiving (CRESARCH) https://contern.org/cresarch/cresarch-repository/ Aug. 13, 2018. The Grey School of Wizardry In 2004 Oberon Zell-Ravenheart established the Grey School of Wizardry, a magical education system drawing upon J. K. Rowling’s novels about the boy wizard Harry Potter. In Rowling’s alternate England, the children of wizard families are educated at Hogwarts, where they study “Spells”, “Potions”, and “Defence Against the Dark Arts”, among other subjects. The Grey School has a seven-year programme (like Hogwarts). The four houses of Slytherin, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw are mirrored by four houses named for the elementals associated with the four quarters, sylphs, salamanders, undines and gnomes (air, fire, water and earth). The Grey School has Potteresque features, such as the “Magick Alley” site where textbooks and school equipment may be purchased, which is similar to Diagon Alley in Harry Potter’s London, where wands and robes, spell ingredients and companion animals (owls, cats, and toads) can be acquired (Cusack 2010, 73-76). Since 2004 textbooks aimed at making wizardry and magic attractive and interesting to children and young adults have appeared. The first was Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard (2004), which contains material on magical arts, conducting rituals, cosmology, wizards of history (including Éliphas Lévi, Charles Godfrey Leland, Aleister Crowley and Gerald Gardner), and a multitude of other subjects, assembled into seven blocks of study (Zell Ravenheart 2004).
