E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] The Caledonide Orogen in the Nordic countries is exposed in Norway, western Sweden, westernmost Fin- Introduction land, on Svalbard and in northeast Greenland. The other the order of at least 700–800 km, the deformation fronts on both side of this bivergent orogen is well exposed in north- sides of the orogen being defined by thrusts that, in the Devonian, eastern Greenland, where W-vergent thrust sheets probably reached substantially further onto the foreland platforms than they do today. -

A revised terrane map is presented for the Scandinavian Caledcnldes. and an outline is given of the principal suspect and exot ic terranes and terrane-complexe s identified outboa rd from the Baltoscand ian miogeocline. The outermost part of the Baltoscandian continental margin is itself suspect , in the terrane sense. since the true palaeogeographical location s of rocks now represented in the Seve and serey-seuano Nappes, while inferred, are not known. The orogen -internal exotic terranes embrace the oceanic/eugeoclinal elements of the Caledonides, represented by the mag matosed imentary assemblages of the Koli Nappes, including ophiolite fragments and island arc products. Even more exot ic terranes occur in the highest parts of the tectonostratigraphy, inclu ding units which are thought possibly to derive from the Laurentian side of lapetus . D. Roberts. In 2016, feldspar production in the United States was representing 46% of the 2016 production tonnages listed in estimated to be 470,000 metric tons (t) valued at $33.1 million, tables 1 and 2. an almost 10% decrease in quantity and a 11% decrease in Feldspar was mined in six States (table 3). BARTON UNIMIN CORPORATION 500 WILSON PIKE CIRCLE, SUITE 127 BRENTWOOD, TENNESSEE 37027 USA EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Nepheline syenite is a commercially prepared, rare feldspathoid-rich rock product that contributes both potassium and sodium oxides to the ceramic formulation. It has been used in both North America and Europe for the production of porcelain tile and sanitaryware for many years. It is the unique mineralogy and high levels of alkalis of nepheline syenite that justify its use in ceramics. These characteristics promote lower firing temperatures that can enhance productivity and lower production costs. Depending on location, the use of nepheline syenite can lower raw material cost by allowing more silica to be used in the formulation. Additionally, the process control found in most nepheline syenite operations offers a controlled level of Fe2O3 that can help to improve fired color. The goal of this study is to illustrate the practical benefits of using nepheline syenite for the vitrification in a ceramic body formulation. The Chadobets lamprophyres are related to the REE-bearing Chuktukon carbonatites. On the basis of their morphology, mineralogy and relation with the surrounding groundmass, we distinguish three types of ocelli: carbonate-silicate, containing carbonate, scapolite, sodalite, potassium feldspar, albite, apatite and minor quartz ocelli (K-Na-CSO); carbonate–silicate ocelli, containing natrolite and sodalite (Na-CSO); and silicate-carbonate, con- taining potassium feldspar and phlogopite (K-SCO). Ree‐ Minerals in Carbonatite, Alkaline and Hydrothermal Rocks, Northern and Central Finland

Box 77, FI‐96101 Rovaniemi, Finland Email: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract REE‐rich minerals were identified and analyzed by electron microprobe from different targets located in the northern and central Finland. Both primary and hydrothermal minerals were found namely: phosphates (monazite‐Ce), fluor‐carbonates (bastnaesite‐Ce), hydrated carbonates (ancylite‐Ce), hydrated aluminium silicates, (allanite), oxides (fergusonite) and U‐Pb rich minerals. Sokli Jammi‐ Kaulus carbonatite veins are enriched in LREE, P, F, Sr and Ba hosting in ancylite, bastnaesite, apatite and monazite. Allanite‐(Ce) and fergusonite (Y) are abundant in alkaline gneiss of the Katajakangas REE‐occurrence. The Korsnäs Pb‐REE deposit includes apatite with monazite inclusions, calcio‐ancylite and bastnasite. The Mäkärä‐ Vaulo REE‐prospect in arkosic gneisses is dominated by monazite, allanite and xenotime. Albitites at Enontekiö contain bastnaesite, monazite, allanite, xenotime and U‐rich minerals includes davidite, masuyite and sayrite. The Honkilehto Au‐Co‐S‐mineralization at Kuusamo is characterized by U‐rich minerals with bastnaesite and allanite. The results obtained provide vital insights into the mineralizing processes associated with REE‐prospects in northern and central Finland. Introduction Economic REE deposits are not known in Finland. However, REEs were extracted in the 1960’s century as a by‐product in the fertilizer production from the apatite concentrates of the Kola Peninsula and the Korsnäs Pb mine in western Finland (1). -
