Objective: To describe T. cruzi infection in bats from the states of Campeche and Yucatán, México. Materials and methods: Captures were made from March to November, 2017, at three sites in Yucatán and one in Campeche. Up to four mist nets on two consecutive nights were used for the capture. The bats’ species were identified and euthanasia was performed to collect kidney and heart samples for total DNA extraction. The quantification of the attraction of S. lineatus to traps baited with modified ratios of host ( Vicia fabâ) semiochemicals together with synthetic aggregation pheromone was evaluated statistically. The bait mixture contained 3 hexen l ol, 3 hexenyl acetate, 1 octen 3 ol, 2- phenylethanol, beta caryophyllene, benzyl alcohol, alpha terpineol, hexanal, linalool plus the pheromone, 4 methyl 3,5 heptanedione. -

Cerataphis lataniae (Boisduval) Hemiptera Aphididae the Latania aphid Synonyms: Ceratovacuna palmae (Baehr) Aphis palmae (Baehr) Boisduvalia lataniae (Boisduval) Note: In the past C. lataniae has been confused with both C. brasiliensis and C. orchidearum (Howard, 2001). As a result it is not always clear which of the older records for host plants and distribution refer to which species. BAYER CODES: CEATLA 2. What is the reason for the PRA? This PRA was initiated following a second interception of this species. Cerataphis lataniae was first intercepted in the UK in 1999 on a consignment of Archontophoenix alexandra and Brahea drandegai, from South Africa. Since then it has been intercepted twice more; on 30/05/02 on Cocos spp. and then again on 13/06/02 on Cocos nucifera. Both the findings in 2002 were at the same botanic garden and there is some suggestion the Coco plants were supplied by the nursery where the first interception was made in 1999. 3. What is the PRA area? As C. lataniae is present within the EU (Germany, Italy, Spain) (See point 11.) this PRA only considers the UK. STAGE 2: PEST RISK ASSESSMENT 4. Does the pest occur in the PRA area or does it arrive regularly as a natural migrant? GALVÃO Abstract: The members of the subfamily Triatominae (Heteroptera, Reduviidae) are vectors of Try- panosoma cruzi (CHAGAS 1909), the causative agent of Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis. As important vectors, triatomine bugs have attracted ongoing attention, and, thus, various aspects of their systematics, biology, ecology, biogeography, and evolution have been studied for decades. In the present paper the authors summarize the current knowledge on the biology, ecology, and systematics of these vectors and discuss the implications for human health. A total of 98 species originating from other continents have established so far in Europe, to which we add 4 cosmopolitan spe- cies of uncertain origin (cryptogenic). Th e 102 alien species of Aphididae established in Europe belong to 12 diff erent subfamilies, fi ve of them contributing by more than 5 species to the alien fauna. Most alien aphids originate from temperate regions of the world. Th ere was no signifi cant variation in the geographic origin of the alien aphids over time. -
Aphids and Their Control on Orchids
APHIDS AND THEIR CONTROL ON ORCHIDS Paul J. Johnson, Ph.D. Insect Research Collection, South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD 57007 Aphids are among the most obnoxious of orchid pests. These insects are global and orchid feeding species are problematic in tropical growing areas as well as in commercial and hobby greenhouses in temperate regions. Rabasse and Wyatt (1985) ranked aphids as one of three most serious greenhouse pests, along with spider mites and whiteflies. These pernicious insects can show themselves on orchids year-around in warm climates, but seem to be mostly autumn and winter problems in temperate regions. Like most other orchid pests the most common routes into plant collections is through either the acquisition of an infested plant or the movement of plants from outdoors to indoors. However, certain reproductive stages of pest species do fly and they will move to orchids from other plants quite readily. Because of their propensity for rapid reproduction any action against aphids should be completed quickly while their populations are still small. An aphid infestation is often detected by an accumulation of pale-tan colored “skins” that fall beneath the developing colony. These “skins” are the shed integument from the growing and molting immature aphids. All of the common pest species of aphid also secrete honeydew, a feeding by-product exuded by the aphid and composed of concentrated plant fluids, and is rich in carbohydrates. This honeydew drips and accumulates beneath the aphid colony. Because of the carbohydrates honeydew is attractive to ants, flies, bees, other insects including beneficial species, and sooty mold. -

To date, C. cavernicola Kamimura, sp. n. has been recorded only from cave habitats (but near entrances), whereas the other four organisms identified at the species level have also been recorded from non-cave habitats. Wings and female genital structures of Cylindrogaster spp. (Cylindrogastrinae) are examined for the first time. The genital traits, including the gonapophyses of the 8th abdominal segment shorter than those of the 9th segement, and venation of the hind wings of Cylindrogastrinae correspond to those of the members of Diplatyidae and not to Pygidicranidae. -

Thomas, Taxonomic Entomologist, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry INTRODUCTION: The giant palm weevils of the genus Rhynchophorus Herbst are among the worst palm pests in the world. One species, Rhynchophorus cruentatus (Fabricius), is native to Florida and the southeastern US. Two other species, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) and Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.), are found in the New World and are considered to be threats to palms in Florida. Of particular concern is R. ferrugineus, known as the red palm weevil. It is a pest of coconut and other palms in its native range. Over the past three decades, its range has expanded into the Middle East, North Africa and Mediterranean Europe. It attacks many palm species, but is especially devastating on date palms. It recently became established in Curaçao in the Caribbean, placing it ever closer to Florida. In each case, it is suspected that the weevils travelled with imported palms. In January 2010, the federal government prohibited the importation into the United States of live palms belonging to 17 genera. IDENTIFICATION: Identification of adult palm weevils is straightforward as they are the largest weevils in NorthAmerica, ranging from about 1 to 1.8 inches (25mm to 45mm) in length. It is based on field collections carried out between 1993-2008, museum collections and a literature review. Fourteen species, representing four tribes and six genera, are now known in this country and are illustrated (habitus). Three species are recorded from French Guiana for the first time: Cavernicola pilosa, Microtriatoma trinidadensis and Rhodnius paraensis. The two most common and widely distributed species are Panstrongylus geniculatus and Rhodnius pictipes. The presence of two species (Panstrongylus megistus and Triatoma maculata) could be fortuitous and requires confirmation. Also, the presence of Rhodnius prolixus is doubtful; while it was previously recorded in French Guiana, it was probably mistaken for R. robustus. A key for French Guiana’s triatomine species is provided.
