  • Pornography, Morality, and Harm: Why Miller Should Survive Lawrence
File: 02-DIONNE-Revised.doc Created on: 3/12/2008 1:29 PM Last Printed: 3/12/2008 1:34 PM 2008] 611 PORNOGRAPHY, MORALITY, AND HARM: WHY MILLER SHOULD SURVIVE LAWRENCE Elizabeth Harmer Dionne∗ INTRODUCTION In 2003, a divided Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas1 declared that morality, absent third-party harm, is an insufficient basis for criminal legis- lation that restricts private, consensual sexual conduct.2 In a strongly worded dissent, Justice Scalia declared that this “called into question” state laws against obscenity (among others), as such laws are “based on moral choices.”3 Justice Scalia does not specifically reference Miller v. Califor- nia,4 the last case in which the Supreme Court directly addressed the issue of whether the government may suppress obscenity. However, if, as Justice Scalia suggests, obscenity laws have their primary basis in private morality, the governing case that permits such laws must countenance such a moral basis. The logical conclusion is that Lawrence calls Miller, which provides the legal test for determining obscenity, into question.5 ∗ John M. Olin Fellow in Law, Harvard Law School. The film endured a long and laborious gestation period under the threat of financial ruin. The project began as a sitcom pilot that McCarthy had initially penned for Fox Television. Fox passed, deeming the project “too edgy and too controversial for TV” “Can We Get a Cleanup On (qtd. in Kevin Aisle 2?”: Williamson). But McCarthy and her How Film Critics Mopped Up the production team could Transgressions of Jenny McCarthy’s not be dissuaded. They Dirty Love bought the rights back Sara Swain from Fox and McCarthy went to work transforming the script into a feature film (Kates). She insists that she never wanted to be a writer but because of the dearth of onscreen comedic roles for women, she was forced to take matters into her own hands (qtd. in Sobczynski). Dirty Love eventually debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in late January 2005, where it was warmly received. John Cooper, the Festival’s Programming Director, lauded the filmmakers in the program notes for so brazenly travelling “across a comic minefield where few dare to tread.” Soon after the film was picked up for distribution.

  • My Open Letter to Jenny Mccarthy Russ Davis
my open letter to jenny mCcarthy Russ davis From: Russ Davis, student/writer; Puyallup, Washington To: Jenny McCarthy, model/comedienne/actress/author/activist; Weehawken, New Jersey Subject: Why I Oppose You and Your Activism Dear Ms. McCarthy, Before all else, let me tell you exactly who I am. My name is Russ Davis, and I am an autistic. On the spectrum. Whatever you want to call it. In June 2000, I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syn- drome; I’m now made to understand that’s not a thing anymore. No matter. I still tell people that I have Asperger’s, but my concern is not over what label my fellow autistics choose to use. My concern is that autistics keep in mind that we should not be enemies with each other–––we should be enemies with people who want to destroy who we are. Last night, I had the strangest dream. I dreamt that I final- ly had a chance to meet you in person and tell you everything I’ve always wanted to tell you. Because, for all the statements you’ve given on autism, I don’t think you’ve ever been willing to sit down with an actual autistic person to see how we really feel (except for your son, but the public doesn’t get to hear his side of the story). Well, last night, your dream self granted me that opportunity. Let me tell you right now what I told her last night. I am a human being with dreams. I want to be a published author.

  • Sexo, Amor Y Cine Por Salvador Sainz Introducción

John Lautner By Melissa Matuscak A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA VISIONARY WITH NORTHERN MICHIGAN SENSIBILITIES 32 | MICHIGAN HISTORY Architect John Lautner would have turned 100 years old on July 16, 2011. Two museums in his hometown of Marquette recently celebrated this milestone with concurrent exhibits. The DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University focused on a professional career that spanned over 50 years and the Marquette Regional History Center told the story of the Lautner family. Combined, they demonstrated how in!uential his family and his U.P. upbringing were to Lautner’s abilities and his eye for design. nyone who has lived in the Upper Peninsula tends to develop a deeper awareness of nature, if only to anticipate the constantly changing weather. !e natural landscapes, and especially Lake Superior, are integral to the way of life in the region in both work and leisure. • The Greatest Artists of the Twentieth Century
This PDF is a selection from a published volume from the National Bureau of Economic Research Volume Title: Conceptual Revolutions in Twentieth-Century Art Volume Author/Editor: David W. Galenson Volume Publisher: Cambridge University Press Volume ISBN: 978-0-521-11232-1 Volume URL: http://www.nber.org/books/gale08-1 Publication Date: October 2009 Title: The Greatest Artists of the Twentieth Century Author: David W. Galenson URL: http://www.nber.org/chapters/c5785 Chapter 2: The Greatest Artists of the Twentieth Century Introduction The masters, truth to tell, are judged as much by their influence as by their works. Emile Zola, 18841 Important artists are innovators: they are important because they change the way their successors work. The more widespread, and the more profound, the changes due to the work of any artist, the greater is the importance of that artist. Recognizing the source of artistic importance points to a method of measuring it. Surveys of art history are narratives of the contributions of individual artists. These narratives describe and explain the changes that have occurred over time in artists’ practices. It follows that the importance of an artist can be measured by the attention devoted to his work in these narratives. The most important artists, whose contributions fundamentally change the course of their discipline, cannot be omitted from any such narrative, and their innovations must be analyzed at length; less important artists can either be included or excluded, depending on the length of the specific narrative treatment and the tastes of the author, and if they are included their contributions can be treated more summarily.
