FATHER ANTHONY’S FAITH FORMATION CORNER

A Word about The episcopal ordination for (auxiliary) -elect will take place in just a few days: December 19, 2017. For this occasion, I would like to touch on once again the topic I have already written earlier this year when Bishop Timothy Freyer was ordained… Bishops fall under either one of the two categories: they are either diocesan or titular. A diocesan bishop is a bishop of a see that exists. The word see, as in Holy See, comes from the sedes which means “chair”—symbolic of the power of jurisdiction of a bishop. [Coincidentally the word cathedral comes from a Greek word meaning “to sit.” The cathedral, whose is the diocesan bishop, is the main church of a diocese.] Essentially a see is a diocese, which is defined geographically in terms of particular territorial arrangements. Thus, Bishop K. Vann is the diocesan bishop of Orange; is the diocesan bishop of , and so on. On the other hand, a titular bishop possesses a see that used to exist in the past, but is no longer in existence: hence, only a title, not a real see. The concept of titular sees/bishops originated after the 7th century when the Muslims took over North Africa and eventually, the Mediterranean. When the Muslims invaded North Africa, African bishops—at least those who were not martyred—had to flee to Europe and left behind their sees. Those sees left behind would fall into the hands of the Muslims and ceased to exist. But those exiled bishops were still bishops of those (titular) sees. Titular bishops traditionally were also known as bishops in partibus infideli- um: in the regions of the infidels. It must be noted that North Africa was very Christian prior to the Islamic invasion: having been home to some of the greatest thinkers of the Western theological tradition like Tertullian, St. Cyprian, and especially St. Augustine. Auxiliary, or assistant, bishops are titular: as in the case of our Bishop-elect Thanh Thai Nguyen. He will be the titular bishop of Acalissus—I have no idea where that was. Apostolic nuncios, those representing the Pope and the Holy See in other countries, would also be titular. Bishops who work in the Vatican without jurisdiction over any diocese would also fall under this category. Coadjutor bishops are titular too. Think of our former , now deceased, who was coadjutor bishop of San Diego a few years ago. A coadjutor has the automatic right to succession when the diocesan bishop retires. So when Bishop

Brom of San Diego retired, Cirilo automatically succeeded him. But as long as Brom was still in office, Cirilo’s see was only titular. Anyway, within our own diocese, just more than a week ago, retired auxiliary Bishop Dominic Luong has come back to the Lord. May he rest in peace! As we welcome a new auxiliary bishop, we sadly say good-bye to another one… All bishops, both Ro- man Catholic and Orthodox, are successors of the apostles. That is why our faith (as well as the Orthodox faith) is rightly called apostolic. As Bishop-elect Nguyen is about to begin his ministry as auxiliary bishop of Orange, we wish him all the best. May the Lord always accompany his chosen servant in this very important office as a successor of the Apostles! On his new ministerial WELCOME DEACON assignment to St.Barbara Church

A Christmas Message from our priests

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Advent, originally from the Latin Adventus, means “coming.” This four-week season begins with the first Sunday that falls on or closest to November 30th, and ends with our celebration of Christmas. This season of joyful prep- aration and anticipation has a two-fold meaning. First, it helps us to prepare ourselves spiritually for the com- memoration of the birth of Christ,

celebrated during the Christmas season. Secondly, it invites us to look forward to Christ’s Triumphal Second Coming at the end of time.

Therefore, all our spiritual work during this Advent Season is about renewing the bonds that bind us to one an- other and to the Lord. We also reach out with open hearts to build up our relationships with one another and with our God.

We wish you joy, peace, and love this Christmas season; and a blessed, happy New Year.

¡Buenas noticias!
